Why is this being voted cold?

THIS IS A NAS DRIVE not just some USB box. Understand the difference.

This is a decent deal. Voted Hot.

NAS boxes are consistently at least £30 more than normal drives, i understand the function but i dont know how they justify £30 just to add a network port/ability
#4
does anyone know if this unit has a torrent client ? or if it can be loaded with 3rd party software to provide this functinality like the Buffalo Linkstation ?
#5
why so cold? I don't understand, seems a good deal!

Who's the manufacturer of the actual HD

There's a speed difference between NAS and USB so that's maybe why they ask more for NAS.

Depends what you're going to use the disk for, £30 extra for me is well worth it being able to simpy transfer the files across the network without having to leave a PC switched on with USB HD attached and directories shared out.

Guess you pays your money you takes your choice :)

Not sure who makes the HD's but not had a problem with any Freecom stuff over the years

From one of the reviews on ebuyer

"SAMSUNG HD501LJ S0MUJ1EP903619 CR100-11...currently selling for around 60 pounds from ebuyer product code 130454"

Seems a reasonable price, NAS is not for me personally but I can see the advantage. Whether that's worth £30 is a matter of opinion.

Not voted.

I have a NAS although i can't access files via uSB and i reckon it's am awesome idea especially with XBMC (which i have now sold :-( )

However i have to admit getting the sumvision Netbox which has more NAS features and a WD Hard drive (not made in china) is probabily a better option, i haven't worked out the cost.

Anyone who wants a simple NAS system this is HOT!

It was 100% perfect from NAS, it was a bit slow streaming from my bedroom loft PC to xbox in living room (completely diagonally opposite end of the house), but then again it worked fine when i first got my dg834v2 router and usb dongle.

Streaming from pc was annoying when it asked for password on some folders, neber worked out why it asked for that.

Shenghis has a XBMC if you're interested by the way.....

Sorry forgot to mention, XBMC played everything, even mkv files. Better media player than my PS3.

Tip: If you're buying a second hand xbox to softmod, try and get the one with a samsung drive.
#18
I have XBMC already, just trying to find a good way to hook up my 2x500gb drives to it

currently i just copy whatever i want to watch to a usb flash drive and plug that into the xbox

I have Linksys slug (NSLU-2) but its slightly beyond my knowledge on how to get it to work how i want, but ive heard it'll do exactly what i want (Add usb storage to a network)

What sort of price was this unit? NAS is just the thing I'm looking at buying at the moment. Can you configure this unit to act as a web (http) server and / or a print server?

Thanks

WD device is rubbish, according to reviews. What's the point of having gigabit network interface when it can't saturate 100Mbps?

marcosdjcm

I have Slug with 2.5TB on it and XBMC can easily stream off Slug via SMB protocol. It can be also done via UPnP AV protocol but this requires to Unlsung the Slug :)
A very good resource on what Slug can do for you is here: http://www.nslu2-linux.org

Not sure if this applied to anyone, but to make my NAS work i had to add source and had to type in the full smb address, not just \\storage like windows.

I think it was something like smb://storge or something........?
#22
That's how it should be. For example, my settings:

My videos
smb://WORKGROUP;username:[email protected]_IP/HDD_1_1_1/MY_VIDEOS/
E:\Apps\XBMC\media\my_videos.png

I think this is HOT and some. Been looking for a NAS drive and this fits the bill. Presumably I can set up an old laptop ( like the one with the broken display, silly me) just to record telly off a usb stick tuner thing and record to the Freecom and then watch it whether I'm in Blackpool, Bahrain, Barbados, Beddgelert or Bognor. How cool is that? Also, isn't it amazing how storage just keeps dropping in price - I paid about the same ££ for a Seagate 250GB usb2 drive a couple of years ago. Was going to post this as a deal but checked and already posted - don't know why it got colded - heat and rep added.
