Quidco isn't guaranteed so can't be included in the final price.

My BT line only seems good for about 6-7Mb even with ADSL2 which keeps me in the dark ages. If I went for cable does that eliminate the BT issue and give me potentially closer to this 50mb speed. Presumably I can do away with BT altogether if I went to Virgin cable?

yea if its not coming through the phone line as i think 8mb (could be 10mb but not much higher) is the highest it goes through a phoneline. if you get cable broadband you should get upto 50mb's. that speed is not possible through a phone line yet, (as far as im aware)

you can get upto 24mb on ADSL 2+, via a BT phone line - you should never get this actual speed, like all of the others, as line loss etc degrades the quality and speed.

Otherwise, I assume that the poster has averaged the discount from Quidco over a 12 month period - is this the period of the contract?

Quidco cashback not guaranteed, and I've had cashback from over £1000 worth of purchases this past year not paid, and some not tracked too. So be wary. Quidco need to get their act together, especially as there is competition out there.;-)

Just beware that VM has traffic management, with 50nb you quickly reach your limit, when your connection will get slowed down to crawling. Telephone charges outside your free allowance are very high with VM (much higher than BT). What sounds cheap when you take out a contract with VM can easy become expensive (that's my experience with VM). Customer service is not good either. I don't have 50mb now but I'm glad I left VM last year and I will never go back to any service connected to Virgin..

The throttling is annoying but it seems it dosent apply to 50meghttp://www.virginmedia.com/images/traffic-management-130509.jpg

Virgin 50 meg is NOT traffic managed http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/12/33657060-so-is-50mb-now-traffic-managed.html

However, having been with them before, their problem is congestion of UBRs, especially in densely populated areas.
Customer service isn't the best either for the prices you pay. I think theres Virgin's line rental as well to pay?
50 mb is relatively new, and the lack of STM is probably an introductory sales come on (although I may be wrong). I cannot feasibly see, if they get a big take up, how they can avoid STM on 50 mb as their UBRs become more and more saturated.
I get 20 MB from my adsl2+ via a BT line.and that is truly unlimited and not subject to congestion.
I was with Telewest and then Virgin for years - kicked it all into touch after loads of problems with them when their infrastructure could't cope with the influx of new customers. I think the same will happen when the 50mb drops in price a bit and they will revise their STM policy.
