***NB*** - As it is a "TODAY ONLY" item, you need to click "BUY" from the TODAY ONLY page on SCAN's website.

I already posted the 9600GT for £62.28; but for many, £16 more for an 8800GT - er 9800GT - is worth it. I'm starting to lean that way myself. You'll need to have Scan2Hexus membership, or pick up instore (Bolton), to get this price.

Scroll down to the Palit Graphics Cards section on Scan's "Today Only" page to find the 9800GT. £7.86 postage if you don't have Hexus free delivery making it £86.

512MB Palit 9800 GT

Cheapest 9800GT I could find - much cheaper than step up to a HD 4850

The image is of Palit's 8800GT - I couldn't find a 9800GT Palit picture but I'm sure it will look quite similar.

Hi

Same site (one link above the 9800GT one), theres a 1GB - 9600GT for £14 more that has faster Mem and GPU speed. Which is the better buy?

[update]
Ah, what a mo. 9800GT has nearly twice the number of cores... that explains a few things

depends on your resolution from my experience. Though some games may rely more on mb in the future. 512mb is ok for today's games. Gain from 512gb to 1gb isn't as big as 256 to 512 and im hearing that the 8800GT/9800GT isn't powerful enough to utilise it properly anyway. I'll stick with 512mb but if your budget can stretch, then probably (im not certain) on 1gb

There is basically no point in getting a 9600GT with 1GB. You have to see where the bottleneck is. Only at high resolutions will the extra memory come in handy. To run any decent game at high resolutions, you'll need more than a 9600GT! The 9600GT will almost never be able to process fast enough to use up the 512MB, let alone 1GB. The 9800GT would also be bottlenecked at the GPU rather than the memory.

The 1GB 9600GT is only better than the stock 9600GT as it is factory overclocked - and to a decent level. But, the extra 512MB will still be wasted. Go for the 9800GT for £14 less, imo.

See here for what little performance gain there is from 1GB on the 8800GT:

Ah - yes - the only difference (improvement) from the 8800GT.

Here's a review (with benchmarks) of the 512MB Palit 9800GT compared with Gigabyte 8800GT and a ATI 4850. Results are not bad at all. 92% overall.

Ordered the 512MB card :) Thanks for the advise.

Sin - that is a review of Palit's factory overclocked Sonic card - a bit of a step up from their stock 9800GT. But you can see from the benchmark that there's not a great deal of difference - I think you made the right choice.

Damit.... you are absolutely right. Oh, well... as long as it plays most games, I'm happy. :)

I think this has now expired. Cant find it anymore.

I think the first batch of 9800 GT cards are 65nm with the 55nm version coming soon. If this is an issue for a potential buyer I’d do your research first.
