Not cheap enough, 5850's will be plummeting soon now the 69xx is out, and for only a few quid more you can blow it away with a 6850 or 6870.

blow it away with a 6850? I think not! the 6850 and 5850 are on par in most games.
And 6870 a few quid more? Provide link or dont post such garbage. You're trying to tell me you can get a 6870 for less than £130? I'll believe when i see it.

got this from ocuk for £124.98 few days back(thursday 23rd), should be arriving on wednesday(29th). could of had it by friday(next day) for free(as get free delivery through forums) but decided to go for wednesday delivery.

I ordered thursday and on friday they go reduce the xfx 5870 down to ~£176, with the 5% off code they were doing(not sure if it's still valid) it would have been ~£167. ~£40 more but quite a bit more performance, overclock it and would give you the 'best bang for bucks' wish I'd waited till friday before ordering :(

a 5850 will beat a 6850 in benchmarks as will a 5870 to a 6870

yeah this is £50 quid cheaper than a 6870 which is a little bit faster. great price.
#6

OCuk offer the same free postage offer as scan.

Not really similar as you have to be a very committed user of the OcUK forums to get free delivery with them but for Scan the terms are significantly easier.

So much for OcUK claiming they had bought up the entire world-wide stock of these!

I'm going to buy a new gfx card in mid-January, around the time I build my new system. Think I'll wait a little longer as prices can only go down on the 5 series.

The only thing that is better on the 6850 vs 5850 is the DX11 tesselation. That might change with newer and better drivers for the 6850 but for now overall the 5850 is around 10% better.

I'm probably going upgrade my gfx card sometime next month as well.

Heard that Nvidia are releasing the GTX 560 (in January) to compete with the HD 6850. So we could see a price drop.

Do you get a free Game with this as well like the ocuk?

That's correct, it's another reason I went with ocuk.
#17
usually with scan if its awaiting an eta they probably aren't getting any in. I got mine form ocuk and am happy with it good card Fan is a little noisy though needs user define controls.

Great price. However, I do think these will be sub-£100 in the next few weeks. I remember last year when the 4850/4870 tumbled in price on an almost daily basis after the availability of the 5850/5870 increased. I obviously realise that what happened in the past does not necessarily indicate what will happen in the future, but the same deep price reductions have mirrored the price cuts of the 48 series cards pretty closely so far.

bought two from ocuk, ones faulty, great cards though, very very well made, yes the fan is noisy ish, seems to default at 55 on mine, easy to set up a profile at 30-40 its silent.

They do overclock to 5870 levels as well :-)

I wonder if this will come with a free copy of Assassins Creed 2?

Radeons have changed the numeration now, so 5850 is higher model than 6850. I would say main benefit of 6850 over 5850 is not DX11 support but power consumption. I would still go for 5850 if I would have sufficient power supply! Thats a fantastic card in reasonable price.
#25
Cheers for the pics Balb0wa =)

guys would this fit my current system? or is it too powerful for my cpu to handle?

this is my current system:

Motherboard Model: DQ45CB
Intel Core 2 Quad 2.66
4GB RAM
Available Memory Slots: 2
Total Memory Slots: 4
500GB HDD x 2
Soundcard: SoundMAX HD

Currently have a standard graphics card (128mb)

system not been overclocked in anyway.

here is pics of my motherboard, bit worried the graphics card might not fit.

why not? ocuk had then at £124.99, they claimed to have got the last stock at a special price from msi, looks like scan have done a deal as well.

Yeah, scan had these up at around £145 whilst the OcUK deal was on, wouldn't make sense to drop the price on an item they had no intention of re-stocking, msi must have looked at the back of the warehouse and found a few more.

I've seen quite a few OC'd 6850's running at 1000/1200 with safe voltage increases.

Balb0wa, what can you get the Frozr up to, I know you said 5870 speeds which implies 850/1200 but at what voltage and can you go higher?

What temps do you get OC'd?
#33
ohhhh. looks so nice. must resist. how does it compare to GTX 275?

5850 performs better than a gtx 285.

Hi Everyone, I'm thinking about upgrading my 4850 for one of these or a 6850, but I still don't understand whether the 5850 or 6850 is faster.
I'm using passmark video benchmark site to compare these two cards: http://www.videocardbenchmark.net/high_end_gpus.html - and it looks like the 6850 is faster... BUT, when I check the features of each GPU in wikipedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units), the 5850 looks beefier.

There were some discussion in previous threads about this card and the 6850 in Scan, with no clear 'victory' for my, about which one is the best card.

I would really appreciate if someone could explain a bit more the pros and cons of each card.

Thanks a lot!

The 6850 will perform slightly better in future game releases due to it's higher performance in 'tesselation'. In older titles the 5850's raw power is enough to grant it victory.
People must remember that the 6850 is NOT the replacement of the 5850. The 6950 is the replacement of the 5850. AMD/ATI have come up with a new naming scheme. This also means that the 6850/70 could have the replacement for the 5770.

As always, you will pay a premium for new technology implementing the newest features, in this case the newer cards are starting to utilise tesselation and looking at some of the benchmarks that show this in action, there is a tendency to think last year's high-end cards are being outperformed by a significant margin.

Truth is few games will be utilising these new features for some time, how many actually use DX11 even now, for example?

You need to ask yourself in these situations whether you need to upgrade at all - is your current setup not performing noticeably in the games you are playing - and whether this is definitely a result of your gx card and not the rest of your system.

If the answer to the above is 'Yes, I need to upgrade my gx card' then ask youself how long you are going to be using the new card to justify the cost of the upgrade. This, in relation to the current deal, would probably get me to go for the 6850 if I was planning on keeping the card for the next 2 years, otherwise get the 5850 if you definitley need to upgrade now as a more short term solution.

Of course both of these cards will be cheaper in a few months' time amyway, so unless you really need either keep your money at the moment.
#39
Thanks Marktime! I think I'll keep the 4850 I have at the moment and upgrade it when the 6950 it's about £100... that means that I'll probably keep my current GPU for another year.
The most demanding game I play is BFBC2, and it performs quite well in 1680x1050.

Thanks a lot,
e.
