Rubbish petrol though!

There were half page colour ads in the paper today, said it starts Monday (with no finish date that I noticed).

From past examples when you spend £50+ in their stores (on valid items), you get a till roll coupon for 5p off full-litres in one purchase (valid for 7 or 10 days, can't remember which) - at any of their petrol stations, so presumably same this time.

+1 was just about to say that!!

Terrible fuel, you'll see less MPG from it so no real saving to be had.

I used to have similar thoughts about few fueling stations when i was driving for few years in another country. I mostly use ESSO here as it is the nearest one but can you please suggest which one is the best in UK?

Any sensible, scientifically proven evidence for that, apart from your own prejudice?

No, I thought not.

It sounds like a good deal but my local store (Brislington, Bristol) is 3p per litre more expensive than Asda anyway.:x
P.S. For the record the "vaild to date" on your receipt is usually 14 days after the date you spent the £50+

Hard to say when the actual promotion will end itself, as there normally isn't an end date on the pos, and they have extended it in the past.
Monday also marks the start of a 15th year of clubcard anniversary promoting double clubcard points being extended. Which im sure is the beginning of getting it back to normal, i.e. 1 point for every pound spent.

I bet the price of fuel goes up tomorrow, it usually does when they have a 5p off voucher !
#11
i have just switched to SHell as i noticed 2 local garaged at 2-4p cheaper then tescos and i am sick of paying premium prices for tescos fuel which is likely to be the lowest grade avaliable. I now get more miles per gallon which also helps, i always though that this was a myth until i started using shell and saw my on board computer register an increase average mile per gallon doing the same routes.
I used to also beable to use spend and save vouchers from the quarterly mailing by they have now stopped this as well by changing the T+C.

Tesco is now living of the hype that they are the cheapest supermarket when actually this is no longer true.

Rubbish petrol though!

Urban myth. Comes from same sources as all the brands. May differ in additives that's all.

However, back to the deal. My local Tesco is always 2-3p more than Shell in particular so this is a marginal deal for me.

I keep a spreadsheet of my fuel costs and where it comes from. On average i get more mpg out of Shell petrol than using supermarket fuel.

I suffer from a similar OCD and have to work out my mpg every time I fill up. The way you drive affects the MPG more than anything. I find Tesco 2-3p more expensive but a typical tank of 50 litres will be 50 clubcard points -£2 in deals. I only fill at Tesco if I get one of these vouchers
#15
Is all their prtrol rough or just the Value petrol?
#16
My local tesco's charge between 2-4p per litre more than Shell or Texaco. The clubcard deals are not good enough to warrant this extra £2 a tank.

(Although obv this deal makes it worth while.. it is the only reason I would go to tesco for petrol these days).
#17
does this work with the £10 off £50 shop online ? i.e. £40 shop 5p petrol voucher ?

 especially good luck to all diesel users, the common rail is a rather expensive thing to repair

Why? The only real criticism of Tesco fuel that I have ever seen is that the 99octane fuel has slightly less calories per litre than shell V power. I have a 320bhp impreza sti jap spec and it runs on tesco 99 beautifully, It HAS to pass the same BS standards as all other fuels on the market to qualify for 99 octane and its resistance to knock is far superior to all other super unleadeds with the exeption of shell (V power is marginally better but thats because V power is above spec for 99 octane). Shell V power has a few more calories per litre so it takes you a little bit further per tank (we are talking just a few miles extra in reality).

Tesco fuel is bought from the same refineries as the other well known brands, tesco do not own their own refineries. Its not 'rubbish' petrol at all, it conforms to the same standards as all BS certified fuel in the land. If you choose to pay a few more pence for your fuel in order for BP/Shell/Esso to advertise at all manner of events then thats fine, but lets be clear your paying for the marketing campaign and the fact that these companies are less efficient at distributing fuel than the supermarkets.

What have car enthusiasts got to do with this? Surely, it's the people who are monitoring their MPG every time they fill up that are the experts?
#22
The person saying we pay a premium for Shell is untrue. Shell is 3p cheaper than Tesco round here and so is Jet.
#23
Have noticed that Tescos seem to put up their prices just before these deals start.

My local one - attached to a massive Extra store - is now 5p more expensive than an Esso garage only a couple of miles away.

I remember it used to be a good deal
#24
And I thought petrol was boring!!! :p
#25
Great for people who use Tesco99 though :)

Thanks OP

On my account I notice that sainsbury petrol cost less to fill up and I also get more miles!?!? strange but true... and I also noticed that the petrol prices go up by at least 5p before the offer ends... but no one complains after the voucher ends but the price stays high.. clever people at Tesco and until the sheep stop following and start bleeting.. it carry on and on...

Agreed, if you see any difference in miles then your car is rubbish not the fuel. Never noticed the difference in any car I have ever had between supermarket fuel and the likes of shell, oh other than the price!

As usual, a debate about whether the product is good or not, nothing to do with whether its a good deal or not even though this site is called HOTukdeals pmsl. Either you like the deal or you dont, we dont need to know how many MPG anyone gets, its personal preference - I personally ONLY buy my fuel from Tesco if I can help it because I like to get lots of ClubCard points to spend on days out with the family! I'm just off to e-mail or phone Tesco to find out why I didnt get one of these vouchers with my Grocery delivery on Monday - so Thank You and HOT!!!
