DVD 1 - Volcanoes:
Volcanoes around the world are heating up at an alarming rate and many scientists believe that this activity is more than a coincidence and that we are on the verge of a series of cataclysmic volcanic eruptions. Journey with us now as we take you into the heart of volcanoes in our quest to predict these looming disasters.
In particular we focus on the city of Banos, in Ecuador, which lies in the shadows of the deadly volcano, Tungurahua, 'The Black Giant'. It erupted before, killing 19 people, and now a handful of researchers, armed with state of the art equipment, are racing to save lives. They know that when this volcano erupts, the people of Banos will have only three minutes to get to the safety zone. But will they heed the warning signs?
DVD 2 - When Nature Rules:
The Great San Francisco Earthquake of 1906, Hurricane Camille of 1969 and the eruption of Mount St. Helens in 1980 were the worst natural disasters America can remember. These events were extreme examples of nature unleashing itself, leaving people defenseless in their wake. This programme sets out to understand why they occurred and how we can measure, predict and effect the consequences of future disasters.
We graphically illustrate America's precarious position in both a region of heavy tropical weather disturbances, and on the pacific plate's "ring of fire", which accounts for the frequency of quakes, storms and eruptions. Survivors tell their tale and remarkable footage brings these giant cataclysms into our living-rooms.
DVD 3 - Savage Sun:With a core heat of 30 million degrees, the sun is the power plant of our solar system. Restrained only by the enormous pull of its own gravity, it explodes with the force of a million H-bombs every second. From the Big Ben Observatory, the National Space Weather Station and the SOHO Satellite, "Savage Sun" presents the most amazing images of the sun yet gathered.
Our closest star, the sun is the cause of all life on earth and if we could trap all of the energy that fell to earth in a single day, we could satisfy humanity's power needs for thirty years.
We meet scientists who want to go one step further and make their own sun in a fusion reactor. They are also forecasting the future of the universe by studying the particle nature of neutrinos. Finally, we visit a massive solar farm where half a million reflectors track the sun and provide energy for 50,000 homes.
DVD 4 - Planet Storm:
Imagine a single storm consuming the entire earth and lasting hundreds of years, or an interplanetary storm devouring the whole solar system. Winds are clocked at up to fifteen hundred miles per hour, faster than the speed of sound. Lightning bolts sear the planet, ripping through black clouds and blinding us with the power of 30 million light bulbs. Dust devils whip up a frenzy, wiping out vast stretches of the planet. Apocalyptic weather reigns on other planets in our solar system but until now has never been experienced by man.
Planet Storm explores Mars' raging dust-storms, Jupiter's Great Red Spot and the extraordinary atmosphere of lo. We brave these titanic tempests, witness their awesome size and monstrous power and see them recreated back on earth where weather worlds collide.
DVD 5 - Fireballs From Space:
Hundreds of tonnes of space debris, most of it microscopic particles, fall to earth every single day! But a fireball the size of a football field can land here too. An impact 65 million years ago appears to have ended the reign of the dinosaurs. Now the idea that our planet orbits in a shooting gallery of comets and asteroids is getting serious attention. Threaded throughout this fascinating programme is exclusive coverage of NASA's mission to land on an asteroid. We also join scientists investigating how comets and asteroids may have been re-shaping evolution.
