Red Hot, I think these use the Samsung drives which are £45 for just the bare drive, so with a nice enclosure its a good deal. Only way to make it better might have been a usb 3 enclosure!

Have some heat from me.
#3
Actual storage will be around 595GB, but way better than a 500GB drive, whose actual storage space would be around 462GB.

anyone know the exact make/model of the drive used in these and whether or not it can be removed from case and used in a pc/laptop?

Samsung 500GB HM641JI 5400RPM 9.5mm I think ;) And easy to remove from the case, I've had a couple already !

Appears the offer has now expired as the price on the website has gone up.

That's a bit weird. Just tried again and it showed the price advertised here right through until checkout. Looks like its in the middle of being changed.

It may indeed be a Samsung but not 500GB, this is a 640GB drive. ;)

Hot! It's still at £40.79, please remember to follow the instructions everyone - go to the "Today Only" section and follow the link to the item on that page.

Note: It doesn't help that the link takes you to the wrong place, the "Go To Deal" link should point to the "Today Only" page. Mods - please change this.

There's some good info on the previous thread about this drive if it helps anyone: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/640gb-dane-elec-usb-2-2-5-external-hdd-portable-hard-drive-41-99-scan/899870?p=10888156

I got this drive last time it was on offer, it was indeed a Samsung 640gb HM641JI
9.5mm, 2.5" drive inside the case. Reused the case with another 2.5" HDD and it works fine.

This deal is cheaper than the HDD on its own, however if you're planning to take it out of the enclosure then im not sure you'd get any warranty? (If they request proof of purchase you've only got it for the enclosure itself, and you void the enclosure's warranty by opening it up)

from the previous thread:

Update:
Just checked the warranty of the internal HDD here: http://www.samsunghddvalue.com/WebRMA/WarrantyCheck/
And apparently it's got a manufacturer's warranty on my internal drive until 2014.
Not sure how i'd go about claiming that if need be, if they would insist on proof of purchase, and how that'd work where it was originally sold in an enclosure...
But if there's no problems with any of that, then it'd be a bit of a result :)

Mine's a mini-usb, definitely isnt micro-usb on mine.

And it's still available for £40.79 through the "today only" image link at the top left of the scan page, if you're able to get free delivery through the AV forums

I have two and they are mini usb connectors on mine - are yours micro? Or are you speculating?

Unusually the drives show as Code 100 in the Samsung warranty checker with a warranty until Jan 2014 - so if they do go faulty after the 2 year Dane-Elec warranty you have another 9 months with Samsung - just take the drive out of the enclosure and RMA it
