Great deal!

Great price for a 640Gb, but I don't think the drive pictured is the one in the description. Think the image is one of the newer USB3 drives, the USB2 So Mobile + is a rounded off shape, a bit ugly IMPO if you're bothered about that kind of thing.

Yes, that's what I actually meant – the image is incorrect on the scan site.

Not going for this myself, but still voted hot.

Incase anyone else wondered, it looks like this is the drive contained inside: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B0031M9JCE

that's based on the last time this deal was posted here: http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/640gb-usb-2-0-2-5-portable-bus-powered-hard-drive-41-99-p-p-free-p-p-for-avforum/890782

Judging from the comments on there it's attached together by clips, not screws, incase anyone else wanted to open it up.

In two minds over whether to get this for my PS3 and swap the HDDs with each other...

Wanted the largest drive possible in there, but looks like the price jump to 750gb and 1tb drives that are 2.5" and 9.5mm tall is quite large...

Think after the 1000/1024 conversion, and the 12% or whatever it is that's reserved by the PS3's OS, a 640gb HDD would provide only around 500gb's of usable space in a PS3 :/

I'm also slightly weary due to hearing certain HDDs can cause stuttering whilst playing from the HDD on PS3, and me personally having no idea whether this drive would cause that, anyone been through this process before and have any advice? Cheers

My dad opened his he got the other week fine and put it in his laptop, said the case just pulls apart.

Was the case reusable? i'd want to stick my old ps3 hdd in there and use it for other things.
#16
Cheers for that, that's good news.

This might be a long shot, but...

Has anyone specifically had this HDD out of the enclosure and had it in a PS3, and attempted to play any games that cache to the hdd? (i.e. Uncharted 2, msg4, heavy rain)? have you experienced any stuttering? did you lower the speed to sata 150 and did that fix it?

What model PS3 were you using? (i'm interested most in the 160gb slim)

Cheers if anyone can help with this

Update:
Based on a buncha googling, and reports from this thread: http://psx-scene.com/forums/f118/stuttering-internal-hdd-65999/
it seems like this drive may/will stutter as an internal ps3 HDD on certain games, unless you use the utility on that page to set it to sata-150 mode, and then it's supposedly one of the better drives to have.

Seems like a lot of the bigger drives have similar issues though, with some of the WD drives being unfixable in this regard.
So based on this price + having an enclosure i can reuse i think i'm going to take the plunge.

Just got this today... can anyone else confirm they hear a faint buzzing from the unit when they plug it in? This is my first portable HDD so i'm not sure whether this is to be expected.

just wondering if i should be concerned before i void the warranty by opening it up and switching HDDs around :/

Hi there Eldini, sorry i couldn't get back to your earlier questions about this drive, I don't log in too often.

But i can confirm that my HDD also gives off a faint buzzing, so have other ones i've used previously, so i reckon its perfectly normal :)

Mine just arrived today, what a great little thing! Didn't realise how tiny it would be compared to my Buffalo 160Gb external HDD which also has to be plugged in to the mains.
Great deal, thanks for posting.

This deal should be hotter then!

Same drive here less the case, more expensive, and it's got more heat?

true, a search for the drive comes up with the drive alone costing more than this, i got it from scan with next day and that was cheap as. the only difference in the end is warranty, this drive only comes with a limited 2yr (dont know what limited entails) compared to oem/retail drives that come with more.

my last 2.5 died near enough 27months, missed it by 3. the usb board died. hopfully someday i can put a 1tb in this one...if it survives.

ps, with mine i didnt notice a loud hum just barely audible, i have to put it up to my ear to hear anything. seems normal.

Update:
Just checked the warranty of the internal HDD here: http://www.samsunghddvalue.com/WebRMA/WarrantyCheck/
And apparently it's got a manufacturer's warranty on my internal drive until 2014.
Not sure how i'd go about claiming that if need be, if they would insist on proof of purchase, and how that'd work where it was originally sold in an enclosure...
But if there's no problems with any of that, then it'd be a bit of a result :)

As for the external case; it was fairly easy to prise apart, but one of the 6 clips got broken.

Not had a chance to try it in my PS3 yet because of the cheapass screws that Sony use stripping so easily. Then Sony sent me the wrong replacement HDD caddy :/
Got a feeling it'll eventually work out well though... will update here if any problems related to the drive.

Cheers again to the OP, and for those in the previous thread for the great info.

^^play ignorance lol

anyway, i dont know if its my drive or pc but after awhile the drive goes 'stale.' i mean if i click on the drive in my computer or on a file if the folder is already open it does nothing. i have to unplug the drive and reinsert it.

any thoughts?
cheers

Reboot computer?
#27
hi
symptom still is: after awhile the drive stops responding and crashes programs and explorer. so i either have to restart or unplug the drive and reinsert, which prob is detrimental to it.

but i always hibernate the pc instead of restarting so i forget to select restart instead. so on boot the drive hangs the boot just after cpu but before the mem test. i have to unplug to start. but since its a dump drive with miscellaneous files i just unplug.

if still possible ill rma it when i get day off and time to clear the drive. gone with usb3 with 4tb usb3 das so will be looking for usb3 drive soon to replace this anyway lol.

thanks anyway
Sol
