8Gb SD HC Card £9.95 Delivered! zavvi

£9.95 @ Zavvi
I saw this and it is an a competitive price; however, it also includes P&P which makes it a superb deal. I think this is only a 24hr deal on Zavvi and will end today.

Good deal. However, check out the Argos clearance site on fleabay. There you can buy 8GB SDHC cards for £4.99 delivered - if you're quick!

But are they Class 4 cards? [haven't looked yet] this is a good price for such a card compared to anywhere else I can find.

Would go with the card apart from them failing in other formats from the same manufacturers when using a camera.

Not a great deal; lots of class4 SD cards available at this price. I bought one from Play last week - PNY; decent make.
#8
are they compatible with every camera make?
#9
Yeah, I got a Class 6 from 7Dayshop for £12. This is a reasonably good price, but not amazing.

I forget which mag it was but they tested a load of these and there was no discernible difference between any of them

You will want to check that your device supports SDHC cards, these are different to SD cards in the format (SD use FAT16 and SDHC use FAT32), many cameras only support the SD format, though I've seen it said that an SDHC card can be formatted to 4GB using a card reader in a PC, to make them work in an SD only device, why would you buy one only to reduce it's capacity ?!?

SD cards are limited to a 4GB maximum capacity (the limit of FAT 16 format).

SDHC cards are FAT 32 which allows much higher capacities, they start from 8GB normally.

A device that reads SDHC cards is backwards compatible and so can use SD cards aswell.

Can get this at this price most places. Play got 8Gb PNY Optima - class 4 and that is not a 24hr deal as mentioned above!!!

I bought a Sandisk 4Gb SD card in Asda yesterday (£7, not brilliant, but I needed it straight away), but when I put it in my camera, which is a few years old, it says card requires formatting, but keeps saying that over and over. Is this likely to be because of the HC business? My old SD cards were just SD cards as far as I know. Any help appreciated!

The short answer is 'yes'. I have a video camera that is five years old that doesn't recognise SDHC cards and behaves very similar. You could try formatting it in your PC to FAT16 and only use the first 2Gb, but even that might not work.

The only times you're likely to notice any difference in speed between SDHC cards in a compact camera are (i) if you're taking high-res still photos in a burst and (ii) when off-loading a lot of images from the card. As for reliability - I've not seen any reports of particular brands being unreliable. In the lower price category (at least), branding extends no deeper than the label anyway. Hope that helps.

Ah, thanks. Or easier, flog it on Fleabay for a fiver and buy one of the older ones! Glad I found this thread, I had no idea there was such a thing as SD and SDHC, so possibly saved quite a few quid on buying the wrong cards in the future. Cheers guys!

Newer cameras are backwards-compatible, i.e. can use both.

Assuming you mean "where?" ... search fleabay for "Emtec 8GB" and look under completed items to see what the Clearance Bargains ad looks like (as the latest batch is almost certainly sold out). They come up occasionally, but you have to be quick when they do. Happy hunting.
