currently im paying £21 a month for 2 mb broadband and no free calls from virgin, i rang up virgin to tell them that i was changing over and the woman bassicaly said the woman i spoke to from tiscali was telling porky pies about the free line rental and not having nothing to do with Bt....what you think?

cold, i've heard really bad things about tiscali
#3
so becuase youve heard bad things its cold?but the deals ok?
if your paying £10 a month to bt then anything between £10 and £30 a month to an internet service provider how can this be bad?

Tiscal are cheap. Thats then end of the positives from me. Was with them until January. If their service works then fine but hit a problem and I guarentee you will turn grey with stress trying to deal with their customer support. They put a block on online gaming but wouldnt admit it and their technicians are useless and read from a script.

Its a good price but I would not recommend. I know others that like Tiscali but those that do are usually the people who have never tried to deal with customer or technical support. Look at any broadband review site and Tiscali will usually be down there at the bottom.

Switched to O2 Broadband in Jan and never looked back. You get what you pay for.

Just checked this out myself today and compared with talktalk global evening and weekends. Here are the main differences: International daytime and evening calls are very expensive with tiscali (from 15p/7p) compared to talktalk (from 2p/0p). Talktalk has a 30-day trial, tiscali doesn't. Tiscali is a 12 months contract, talktalk is a 18 months contract. All other costs and services are the same (both include free wireless modems). Both services enjoy an equally bad reputation in forums. My conclusion is if you plan to make international and UK day and evening calls, talktalk is much cheaper. You need to commit to talktalk for 18 months but you get the 30-day trial. If you don't like the service you go back to BT and it costs you nothing (exept any chargeable calls you made). Talktalk looks to me the better deal on paper, but I must stress that I have no experience with either services.

I've had horrible first hand experience of Tiscali's "customer service". It took months to get them to stop billing me after I left. I wouldn't touch them with your barge pole. Cold.
#7
Agreed cheap but just taken 8 months to get my mum on it and the customer service and technical assistance is shocking. Join at your peril.

If you pay virgin £21 for just broadband you are seriously overcharged. Virgin broadband is £9 per month. For tiscali you need a BT line but the line rental is payable to tiscali not BT when you switch over to tiscali. Same with talktalk.

Recently switched to Tiscali from Virgin as they installed a new BT line at no extra cost. Up to 8MB broadband, Free w/e local and international calls, Free wifi router - all for £9.99 (first 3 months) & £14.99 thereafter. Price includes £11 line-rental usually charged by BT. Very pleased with the value :)

Max download speed is 6.5Mb dropping to < 250kbs during peak time !!. Although its not Tiscali's fault, switching from a cable to ADSL broadband was a mistake, me thinks

soz m8 but cheap no service ain't that cheap

I think tiscali are good - as long as you know what you are doing and are a bit more tech savvy than the average bear.
If not - then pay a bit more and go for a better provider

Edi, you sure thats not Tiscali's fault re the drop in speed during peak times? Perhaps more Techie people can shed some light on it. This happened to me when I was on Tiscali too and they kept saying it was because my exchange was busy. Ive never noticed any drop in speed with O2 at any times of day.

Thought its down to my distance from exchange.. but the exchange is only 3/4 mile away. Anyway, 250kbs speed is practically useless :)

I must be lucky then - been with Tiscali 3 years no problems. Phone line rental, all calls to 01 numbers etc (NOT mobiles) free 24/7 and 8mb broadband (averages 4m/b - up to 6 m/b early hours of morning.)
Well happy for £20 per month (Tiscali Max Unlimited plus Anytime Talk II):whistling:

For the love of god, stay away. After I cancelled my contract early they left a marker on my phone line at the exchange meaning that I couldn't connect to another ISP until an engineer had removed it. customer service is shocking too, they make bulldog look good.

That sounds like Tiscali's throttling. It's certainly not normal for ADSL, the only normal speed drop is the one with regards to your distance from the exchange.

It's possible that your line to the exchange is congested, although BT are apparently pretty good at keeping them reasonable.

There's supposed to be a BT speedtest that bypasses your ISP but I don't have the link handy, you could also check the status of your local exchange using something like this.

im happy with tiscali been with them 3-4 years excellent service

To test your ADSL line using the BT test user account i.e. Broadband test and/or test your ADSL line Speed i.e. broadband speed test bypassing your ISP go to:

This information is worth keeping for reference.......

Seriously edi, that's Tiscali doing that. Hence the reason this deal has hit below -100!
#22
Can I stress to everyone to stay away from this provider please?
Capped speed, and you will be disconnected regularly.....
I've had the worst experience which I'm sure a lot will agree with.....
#24
i just joined with tiscali with this deal. im a student just moved into rented accom. no bt line in 40 year old block of flats with 3 phone sockets. So pay bt £125 to reconnect or tiscali £30. Also no virgin fibre optics. Also bt now changed the date on the adsl2 update to ????? so max line speed of around 2-4.5 meg. cant get virgin, be or 02 wont be much faster as bt are not updating in my area. Oh and by the way i live in London, zone 2 on the tube map. 2-4.5meg this is got to be a joke.

I'm with Tiscali and I use Ratebuster for daytime international calls (1p a min to U.S.A. and Canada). International calls from Tiscali are free at the weekend.

As a long term Tiscali customer with some experience of their failings I can tell you the following.

Tiscali are cheap and if you don’t have any problems you get a good deal. The trouble is, most people do have problems with them and some people have long running problems that can only be resolved by going to an alternative ISP. Trying to leave then presents a whole new challenge. Their internal systems seem to be very poor and their management seems to be on par with companies that are foolish enough to employ ex army officers as managers (if you’ve ever seen these fools in action, you’ll know what I mean).

Even if you have to pay a little more, avoid the shambles that is Tiscali.
#27

Steer clear of Tiscali!

The slowing at peak times is a sign their capacity is limited and they are throttling your access.
The contention (ratio of users to capacity) is way too high - that's part of why it's cheap.

Besides, it's not cheap if it's not working as promised :x

The poor customer service when things go wrong just adds insult to injury :?

ha tiscali sent a rep round who signed us up .. started getting bills but our bt line was still connected work that out we cancelled and still got bills .... nice company .. stay away

Tiscali are the worst company ever! Their "broadband" service is sooo misleading!

At offpeak times (between midnight and 9am) I would get about 5mb - 6mb.

During peak time, (i.e. from 9am to midnight) I would get between 60kbs - 300kbs rendering the service useless.

They kept telling me its the distance between me and the exchange etc etc.

I switch to Sky using the same exchange and I now have my full 8mb maybe dipping to 7mb at peak times.

God, to think I put up with Tiscali for a year!!
#31
Sorry voted cold but didnt realise this included line rental. Not that bad if it included line rental.

Been with Tiscali since January, signed up to the £14.99 8mb package with free line rental.
Also got my £30 connection fee returned via quidco.

So far so good, they say the max i can get on my line is 3.5mb and i always seem to be above 3.0mb so no problem there.

Free wireless router which i do not use and heard has caused other customers problems, so i think to a degree if your a bit of a techie you will get on with Tiscali a bit better.
If you need support then forget them, because even if you do not know how to set up your router your going to have problems, obviously if there is a problem with the line then your stuffed both ways.

You need a BT line so Tiscali are talking S**T, but you pay them the rental and if something goes wrong a BT engineer (openreach) will fix it, but expect it to take longer than if you were paying directly to BT.

For £14.99 I am very happy, if it drops once or twice a month I can live with it, however when my 12mths is up I may consider O2 now they are in my area and an O2 mobile contract, BT line rental £10.50 plus £7.50 O2 and there is little separate them with Tiscali.

Will see how the next few months pan out

Kind of, i just moved flats wanted bt and o2. Old flats 3 phone sockets in property previous tenants had a phone line. Went through bt in the end they wanted to charge me £124.99, it was a joke phoned tiscali £30 startup and openreach came and connected my line through tiscali. Saved £124.99 even thou bt informed me when i complained that i would have to pay £124.99 with every other company but they could spread my cost of new line connection through montly direct debit £22 a month for the first year for BT. Liars Liars

mind you last 2 flats i lived at i did have bt and tiscali broadband, i never really had a problem with them. they can be sh*t but you expect it with the price. Example used to get 6.5mb speed almost all the time but if you go heavy between 6pm-11pm then they slow you right down to teach you a lesson. keep any big downloads out of those hours you will have constant high speed. But my bad experiance was phoning to ask to cancel the broad band for the 11 august giving a months notice and having it cut off a couple of days later. ie no broad band a month before leaving. annoying as h*ll

I think the minus 224 score at present sums up how people feel about Tiscali.

On face value this should be an excellent deal, but their appalling reputation for terrible customer service has severely dented their credibility. I really wish companies like this would sit up and listen to their customers....especially those who want to leave them. Just being the cheapest in the market is no guarentee of success. Once a company gets a poor reputation for service is extremely difficult to recover from it.
