TBH I get baffled with looking at all the variations on DX. Can anyone recommmend a good torch from there? Ive got a few maglites but I know theyre nowhere near the output of a good LED

i tried working it out once, gave up in the end. they all have brightness ratings, so best bet is to take that and the price :)

Same torch, same spec, same price, no DX logo, here.

£1 in my Poundland, several colours to choose from (and no wait). They also have a small aluminium torch with 8 LEDs which uses only 1xAA cell. For me this is more convenient.

Try and find if your local aldi have any of these left .Superbright torch and extremely well built but best of all takes AA rechargables which few LEDs do,

These look almost identical to the ones in poundland,Good for a pocket torch but not bright enough for long distances,i have several of these,

Recently bought LED Lenser Police Tech Focus Torch from Amazon, its £28.98 at the moment, but I believe is in a different league to these multiple LED torches. It only has one high intensity 1.25 watt LED but delivers a brilliant changeable beam of light for such a small torch. The battery life is excellent as well. Gets 5 stars on Amazon too!

I keep one of these in my toolbag at work
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.4452
and having used a few different torches and head lights I think it is excellent.

Surely you can't go wrong at this price. Of course it is not going to compare to a "LED Lenser Police Tech Focus Torch" at £30......even the name sounds brilliant. Mine may not be the biggest or best but me and my wife (or so she says) are happy with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!:D

I would rather pay 37p extra than have to go to poundland. Hot deal.

maglites now have led torches, if you have an old one that has a standard zenon lamp you can to LED lamp. not sure of cost.
#20
The torches you want to be looking for are cree torches. They are the brightest by a long shot. The aldi torch has a cree bulb and the differance is noticable as demonstrated above. (_;)

Indeed you can buy the upgrade, I did so about a year back. Just search on screwbay for maglite led upgrade to get some idea of what's what. ;)

BTW, forgot to say that 8,000 mcd = 8 candela = 1.7 lumen for a 30 degree beam angle and the average filament 25 watt light bulb outputs 300 lumen!!!

This is a far brighter torch for only 70 cents extra! Personally I would avoid the 9LED thing like the plague.. This one also looks pretty good for the same price

Two amazing torches I have bought from DX are MTE M3-2 Cree MC-E 8-Mode 700-Lumen LED Flashlight with Assault Crown Price: $36.21
and UltraFire U4-MCU Cree Q5-WC 3-Mode 230-Lumen LED Versatile Flashlight Price: $21.14

The latter being an absolute bargain..

I recently ordered the 7dayshop Cree head torch. So far I’m extremely impressed with it, especially at the price. It’s just a marginally slight nudge brighter and whiter than the Luxeon “5W” (allegedly) metal torch taking two AAs I bought from china recently for about £3.something + £3.something else postage and nearly a month’s wait.

The maglite LED upgrades are about a tenner-ish plus, but I’m not sure how many people are making those — maglite themselves / third parties — and whether the third party ones may even be better.

I have 2 LED Lenser P7's and P3 but several decent torches from DX, the LED Lensers are well made torches and pretty bright but last several hours/days depending on setting....the P7's have a beam focus that i think is pretty useless

the DX torches i have are miles brighter than the led lenser ones, some laster longer some dont....they generally run hot and some take bespoke batteries (they have a pcb in them to digitally regulated them, so they dont overheat! , some are AA sized and some are about 100% larger than AAs)...dont believe what some clueless muppets state on here most are well made, almost as good as led lenser/maglite build

best ones I have from dx are:-

MTE3-2 700 lumen - very very bright - dont shine in your eyes - temp blinds (bit bigger but slimmer than the led lenser P7)
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.16501

Hugsby 190 lumen small and bright for size (brighter and much smaller than the led lenser P7, slightly bigger than a led lenser p3)
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.32876

Uniquefire S10 Cree 220 lumen - incredibly bright for such a small torch - same sized but much slimmer than the hugsby, tiny bit bigger than a led lenser p3
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.30986

make sure you get the right batteries and charger

i use this charger for 14500 and 18650 batteries - either cut end plug off (what i did) and add a uk plug, buy a converter or buy a uk plug/cable
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.12594

14500 batteries i use for hugsby and uniquefire (though they can use ordinary AAs torch is brighter /better with 14500, could be my imagination though!!)
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.26124

18650 batteries i use for mte3-2
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.5790

agree it is a minefield

also this torch in this thread whilst cheap is nowhere near the quality of the good ones on DX...will be better than the cheap tud at poundland though

also these are handy and quite bright for their size and cheap too, though you may like get a dud one

agreed although the aldi one looks quite weak

If you can afford to pay around £6, and want a pocket torch (1 AAA battery) that has around 50 times more light output than the one posted, then I can reccomend the one in the link below.
It is the brightest 1 AAA torch I have ever seen, and brighter than most 3 AA torches.
Light output is 150 lumens (max) and has a CREE Q3-WC LED.
It only weighs around 30g (without battery)

I have the Ultrafire and it's an amazing torch, but this one

http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.14450

Is on another planet. It can light up trees about a mile away and looks like the bat signal when shone into the sky.

It takes fancy Lithium batteries, which I bought two of and a charger for not much, but it lasts for days.

Dealextreme are a very poor company don't expect to recieve them before Christmas my last order from them took 7 weeks to arrive and then the 2x $36 torches were missing, they won't credit or send replacements i'm currently arguing it with paypal for a refund. Beware.

Mine were not from DX but they are identical to the DX one, without the DX logo on the torch, everything else, the 3 silver stripes, the strap and the battery holder etc... They are just exactly the same. I would guess they are from the same factory, bought them in china while on holiday for approx £1 each. was too cheap to say no.

https://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.18697 these are the donkeys gonads!! they have a "cree" emiiter far better then led, extremely powerful and good on batteries, makes maglite look like a candle!
