IMO, without getting into the big debate, NEVER ever pay the annual fee for any card! Cancel just before the 12 months, leave it minimum of 6 months and sign up again. We do this regularly, I sign up (normally when there is a good TCB promotion on), get the card, recommend my partner, so get a bonus there, we both spend £2k in the first 2 months, more bonus miles, Even better you can get the BA credit card AND the Amex Gold Rewards card and get the bonus/promotional miles for both as the Rewards Charge Card isn't charged as a credit card....
I would never, ever pay for a credit card...... that said, I'd never use miles for economy long haul flights, even just paying the taxes means often they are v.poor value, use them to upgrade OR for partner flights in other countries (e.g. mine are currently being used for flights within South America on airlines such as LAN/TAM, but also used them in Australia for domestic/international travel on Qantas).
Sorry to hijak your thread OP, voted hot BTW.

Good point but when you get the Virgin Atlantic card, they automatically bill the annual fee to your first statement so no way around it.

I get these lounges free with my Amex and its ok. Nothing like a proper business class lounge though. No champagne and not much food. But still better hanging out with the plebs and it is nice and quiet.
Are you a bit up yourself Benjai?
Maybe, but he does have a point. Using lounges is a game changer and makes the airport experience so much more pleasant.
But some people have Amex cards, travel business class and don't need to rub it in to others who don't.
Anyone can get an Amex (subject to the normal credit score and paying an annual fee), it doesn't make them any better than anyone else so not sure why you're having a dig at this guy?
Get the Virgin Atlantic Amex, £140 annual fee and a shed load of bonus miles for signing up. In the first 12 months, we've had 2 free flights to Orlando (economy) and 2 free Premium Economy to Los Angeles.
Yes, we had to pay the taxes but even after paying said taxes and taking the £140 fee into account, we're still £1100 up on flights we needed to book anyway.
Not really making a relevant point

We get free entry with the Barclays wee trick, open to all.
Thanks, just took up this offer. Usual price for 'standard' entry is £22.50 so free Champagne and a bit of money saved :)

also, go through quidco and you get 10% as well I think

Pity they don't have one at Manchester as it sounds like a great deal
bit gutted about MAN too...

So just Birmingham, Gatwick, Heathrow and Stansted are options for this then (Heathrow is Terminal dependant) -- have no plans to utilise any of these but voting hot as seems a decent deal for most people :)

Have they taken into account that T2 opens at Heathrow in June 2014?
