So this might not seem like a hot deal at first but the drive is powered by USB, I've never seen a drive bigger than 160GB that's powered without using an external adapter, so that alone, makes this a rather good deal.

Aren't most 2.5" drives powered by USB?

Loads of 250 and 320gig usb powered drives around. Not a bad price I suppose.

voted cold all external 2.5" are usb powered.

also you can get 320gb for around £40 for iomega at comet (countrywide or even cheaper at random sainsburies stores)

This is a good deal, most people think that it the same as all the other external usb power devices. However this is Waterproof and shock resistant from 3 feet. Most can't even do 1 foot drop.

tonyg1962, you beat me to it.

Edit: The price is £58.74 inclusive delivery, which does make a bit of a difference.

This drive is shockproof and wont brake if you drop it from 3.5m on a concrete floor and waterproof to 1m for 30 minutes. That makes this drive very different from all the other cheap portable drives. Because of the delivery costs I have to change from HOT to WARM!

There is a way to get delivery for free through AV forum but that's really a pain in the a**e.

That one you have, can you take it apart and swap the drive out?
I'd want to put the 1TB in my laptop but then I'd still want the enclosure for my existing hd.
Some WD 2.5" enclosures are sealed so you have to destroy the case before you can get to the hd. Is this the case also with your one?

Just be warned that it may not fit in your laptop. All the 1TB drives are thicker than standard laptop drives and won't fit in most.

It's actually a 4ft drop repeated 26 times, but they usually take quite a bit more punishment than that. Much better than the ordinary drives IMO.

Ginger6 are selling these for £55.68 (yellow £55.61) with free delivery: http://www.ginger6.com/peripherals-hard-drives-external-c-9618_9472.html

Thanks, might buy the 500GB version as going to need this very soon although would have liked 256 bit AES encryption.
