Some people may want to read this before the television series starts in April. This is the best price I could find.

First volume of a brilliant new fantasy trilogy: the most powerful, original and absorbing new epic since Stephen Donaldson's Chronicles of Thomas Covenant. The first volume of George R R Martin's glorious high fantasy tells the tragic story of treachery, greed and war that threatens the unity of the Seven Kingdoms south of the Wall. Martin unfolds with astonishing skill a tale of truly epic dimensions, thronged with memorable characters, a story of treachery and ambition, love and magic. Set in a fabulous world scarred by battle and catastrophe over 8000 years of recorded history, it tells of the deeds of men and women locked in the deadliest of conflicts and the terrible legacy they will leave their children. In the game of thrones, you win or you die. And in the bitter-cold, unliving lands beyond the Wall, a terrible winter gathers and the others -- the undead, the neverborn, wildlings to whom the threat of the sword is nothing -- make ready to descend on the realms of men. A Game of Thrones begins the most imaginative, ambitious and compelling fantasy epic since The Lord of the Rings. Thronged with memorable characters, it unfolds with astonishing skill a tale of truly epic dimensions. There have been many pretenders to the throne of Tolkien: now at last he has a true heir.

amazing book and full of subtle details that can only make the show better.

Unless (being US TV) they leave it out. The Americans don't really do subtle on TV, most of their audience wouldn't understand it. . .

Read them all, absolutely fantastic, waiting for the latest one soon to be published. I wouldn't have thought it would be appropriate for tv though unless it's dumbed down. Got mine at smiths 2 4 1 but still a good price.

Not a trilogy either, 6 out so far.

BEST. FANTASY. SERIES. EVER.

Apart from maybe the Malazan Book of the Fallen.

Just started reading Yday, looks like a must read so far.

6? It's actually 5. Or 4 if you want to get technical.

I copied the description from Amazon, so don't blame me ;)

I just wish the story line had not been left up in the air after book 4. The other 2 books don't realy take the story forward in my view

even better deal, free at you local library (the place with all the books in it)!

steve1221 apparently they stay true to the books, only deviating slightly in a few places.

Guy I work with is an extra on the show so I got to meet the crew and George in Belfast last year, can't wait!

It on HBO so it should be a fairly decent production.

I'm waiting for the tv tie in version to hit asda or sainsburys for £3.49

I worked on the filming of this in Malta :-)

Unfortunately a lot of libraries have or are closing.

Have they finished yet, read these about 7 years ago and they didn't end, and he started writting a different set. This publisher/aurthor takes more advantage than any i've ever come across. Should be a law saying they must warn you the books haven't finished before you buy them. My Dad bought them but could only wait 5 years before he died.
If you are buying it as a gift only give it to people under 20, as waiting for these to be published will last longer than most marriages.
He's got a hit and is dragging it out as long as he can. Don't be used, don't buy them.

His one on fly fishing was good though, LOL.

There's a new one out July I think, no sign of an ending in sight, have a feeling the TV series will vanish after one season due to diehard fan dissatisfaction and the torrent community ignoring the TV screening of it added to the production costs.

it's a great series and I rarely see them in charity shops or on offer elsewhere, heat added

I can't see the series doing well or staying true to the books. Correct me if i'm wrong (it was a long time ago i read them) but doesn't SPOILER SPOILER Ned die in the first book?? Can't see them hiring Sean Bean, promoting him as a main cast member and then killing him off

Thats the perfect role for Sean Bean, he gets killed off in most of his films.
