When my car insurance was due for renewal, I used the AA as surprisingly they were the cheapest.

When I phoned up, it was £360 (the cheapest quote by about £30). I asked if there were any deals for joining recovery. They said I could join for £35, and this would also entitle me to a 10% discount.

So I joined @ £35 and then paid £ 324 for the insurance - total price of £359.

So the AA actually paid me £1 to be a member

pretty weak deal as its only roadside, £97 for relay
as rac is £33 and £69 for natinowide recovery
#5
If you go with the RAC through Quidco you get £21 pounds back on the Roadside which means you are only pay £12 for the year.

Also that means you can spend the £21 pounds saved anywhere not just M&S.

i have noticed that green flag are even cheaper...you go through quidco (for £20 cashback) and you could get the recovery plus option for £36 ( this is equivalent to solution 3 with RAC at £81 after quidco).

Hi there

My AA has just run out...

The AA - Covered ME and not the car so I would be covered in any car.
GreenFlag - Cover the CAR so anyone who is driving my car is covered...

What do the RAC do??
#12
They must have put the price up, I purchased cover for a vehicle just 2 weeks ago for £29.99 - this was the online price and they price matched it on the phone too.

Cover for your CAR is only any use if you have a Banger that is gonna break down.. How many of you have a CAR older than 2000 Models... Comon??

If u have, then fair enough... if u haven't.. Spend the money somewhere else, or do what we all used to when we were younger and had less money...

Phone a friend or Family member to come and pick you up and tow you.., WHY pay these peeps for doing that!!!

Green Flag is the best deal at the moment, followed by RAC.. :whistling:

I wouldnt touch Greenflag with a bargepole! You only get the first 30 mins free then you get charged and if you dont use their designated garage, they will refuse to help you. I am disabled and this happened to us last year. If you read the small print it does state this but because most people never use their cover, you would never know until you need it....then they have you over a barrel.

I called the AA and they have a bluebadge discount scheme and have just managed to negotiate full relay without the homestart for £20.45 for the year. Their services are totally free for no fixed period and they will take you where YOU want to go.

AA is far superior in my own opinion.

AutoAid is only £36 for full recovery for the year. It's slightly different as it's a pay and claim service.

I've been with the AA for 17 years, joined when I had a slightly unreliable MK3 ford escort :) Used the cover 3 or 4 times in my first year. Upgraded the car and not used it since!

Some things to look at in whatever you get are if the policy covers you for a single car or any car you are driving, any restrictions on home start cover etc... Read the small print before you sign the dotted line!

When I renew this year I'll probably swap to RAC as my best mate joined them as a patrol driver last October so hopefully I'll get a discount!

Are you saying no cars break down that are less than 8 years old or have i misread your post?
#19
Don't forget you can get RAC cover using tesco clubcard deals - ie using tesco vouchers totalling a quarter of the RAC price. Roadside needs £14.25 of vouchers, but you can choose all sorts of cover.

Cars of all ages can let you down at the most inconvient times (you only have to look on the motorway) and if I was 200-300 miles from home I don't think any friends of mine would appreciate coming to tow me to where I'm going or bring me home.In my view its money well spent and gives you peace of mind should anything unexpected happen.

Quidco only applies to option 1 and 2 not basic cover (the £33 one), hence you cannot get cover for £12. Hence AA seems a better deal.

The website says £40 for Solutions 3 & 4 and
£21 for other new completed UK breakdown policies

So where did you see it doesn't apply to basic Roadside cover?

When you click on the quidco link it tells you on RAC website:

Right now, 25% online discount* plus, Roadside cover, Solution 1 and Solution 2 all have £21 cashback. There's also £40 cashback with Solution 3 or Solution 4.

Note it does not mention basic roadside cover which is priced before option 1 & 2. If it does track can someone tell me as I would probably go for it at this £12 price.
#24
You have just said it includes Roadside cover in your statement!

Right now, 25% online discount* plus, Roadside cover, Solution 1 and Solution 2 all have £21 cashback. There's also £40 cashback with Solution 3 or Solution 4.
So that means 25% off for joining online, PLUS £21 cashback for ROADSIDE, and Solutions 1 & 2. Unless I don't understand English........
#25
Don't some car insurance policies already include roadside assistance? Worth checking out, you might be covered already.

You could be right I might have been reading it wrong. I read it as 25% discount on roadside but only option 1 & 2 have £21 discount.

I'm with the AutoAid with Pay & Claim service at the moment. Only really used them once since I have been with them. Good fair price for breakdown recovery service.
REMEMBER, you are paying for PIECE OF MIND if you breakdown in the most inconvenient times & places.
Like with most things you buy, wear & tear on vehicles. Would you like to tow your friends/family vehicle if the have a breakdown if they have broken down very far. What about the potential damage/safety risks to your own car towing a heavy vehicle at that distance. The time for the breakdown recovery to pick you up & send you on your way to your destination? Also, make sure you read the T&C's of the breakdown/recovery policy what you are covered for.

I have also been with another great service, GEM Motoring Assist with Recovery RECLAIM

I wouldn't really like to type what I think of Greenflag.....:whistling:

In summary F-ing useless.

Mates Porsche wouldn't start due to dampness on a cold Scottish winter morning..it was a pampered London Porsche you see... Greenflag turns up with a tin of "damp start" and not a lot else - and couldn;t get the car started - it was embarrassing how incompetent they were :?
