I was recently notified that my membership renewal was due and the quote was in excess of £100, I contacted customer services and pointed out that NEW members were being given DISCOUNTS or M&S vouchers.
After speaking to a number of people I was eventually offered a 50% discount, so if you do not make many callouts on the service then make sure you get a decent discount.
My discount was increased because I had telephoned the AA last year and asked for a discount and was told that it was not possible to apply discount to existing members accounts.

Happy Bargain Hunting

this isn't a deal, it's haggling...

there is no guarantee that whatever price you pay is available to others

It may not be a deal. It may be haggling.

But as ours is due at the end of March & we've been quoted over £100, it's well worth knowing & well worth trying.

Ditto.

However, I have called them out a few times in the last 12 months.

But thanks for the information.

No "heat" added, but "rep" for you instead.

exactly

This is the silliness of such marketing strategy. I have spent years going between the two/three main providers getting the best deals ( which are always better than the loyaly/noclaims discount offered by my current providers)

If one of them offered such a policy they would clean up. keep customer and recruit new ones and significantly improve revenues over a small increase in costs. In these times it should be a no brainer

Use Autoaid instead:- http://www.autoaidbreakdown.co.uk/join01.phpYou get all the benefits of the The AA or RAC, but for only 36.00 GBP per year.

This covers both husband and wife in any car. I don't think there is any other deal that comes any where near it.

We do the same, simply switch to the most cost effective cover. This year we switched to Tesco Finest Breakdown cover and got it for half the price of the equivalent RAC product

It may be haggling but top class inform everybody.
Scouser could have said nothing and been a joey and not everyone knows this.
I negotiate with everything and it works 9 times out of 10.
Well done you scouse!!!!
About time these companies looked after their customers not just new ones

Yep, AutoAid is best bet around.

Go to MoneySavingExpert.com and under breakdown insurance read the many satisfied customers.

You pay the call-out garage and get a cheque back from AutoAid within days.

Incidentally, it's now £37 a year, gone up by a whole £1!! But similar cover from RAC / AA would cost £100+.

Not quite the same scheme as the AA offers...

Auto Aid Breakdown "How it works"
---
"...Our Services in the UK

If the vehicle that you, your legal spouse or civil partner are driving breaks down we can arrange and will reimburse for the services as shown below.

The benefits and services apply to ANY breakdown, which occurs during the period of insurance and within the territorial limits"
---

The AA Breakdown Cover "Frequently Asked Questions"
---
"...Will you come out if I'm the passenger rather than the driver?

Yes, regardless of your type of cover, with AA membership you are covered as the driver or passenger. If you have Personal membership this applies for any vehicle. If you have Vehicle membership this applies for the vehicle that you have registered with us."
---

This difference means that if you are in a vehicle & the driver does not have vehicle recovery insurance, you can still call The AA & gain assistance for that vehicle.

The AA use to advertise that "It is the member that is covered, not the car", but this now seems to have been dropped as a slogan & there are varying degrees of what vehicle (up to three at the same address) or whom (joint or family membership) can be covered.
