There's a reason why it's so cheap...it's an Acer. But I guess if someone is desperate....

looking for a new laptop for christmas, but think will pass and maybe wait for one of the good Dell Deals from Mike hopefully:thumbsup:

Absolutely nothing wrong with Acer laptops, I have two of them and they've never let me down.

Yet to see a good dell deal posted by miket, if you want a real discounted price on a Dell try one of pcworlds refurb ones

You really don't want to be recommending someone refurb pcworld laptops there is a reason why they are refurbs...

Maybe I was unlucky but the Acer I used to have was awful. It started breaking down completely after around 12 months then died a few weeks later. Acer customer support were terrible throughout the whole thing - not even an apology that it completely died after 13 months, yet alone a discount off their ridiculous repair charges. I found out later on that the internal design of the laptop was very poor.

Why do people think acer is a good brand?

I suppost some don't know what a good computer is.

Acer is right up there with the cheapest brands like E-Machine, Advent and Gateway.

If you want a good Laptop buy a Sony Vaio.

Many new laptops come with a free Win 7 upgrade already ;-)

My Acer is the first laptop i've owned so it's hard to compare against others.

Currently waiting for it to come back from repair as what appears to be poor design has caused a crack in the hinge. I was told it would take 2 weeks to have it back in my hands. That was 3 weeks ago now, I am assured I will have it back in 5-7 working days now :whistling:

I should point out that the repair under warranty isn't carried out by Acer, it is by 'InfoTeam' and if you call their support number the options make it clear they cover the repairs on many other brands ;-)

As for this deal.. i'd spend a little more (£400) and take a look at the ones DELL are offering right now. I just advised my parents on one only a few weeks ago and it has a faster Core 2 Duo, a larger HDD 250GB I think, better GFX, Win 7 upgrade, 4GB RAM so similar spec to the 2nd one on this page but the CPU makes it worthwhile.
#13
I would spend the extra and get a Dell than an Acer.
I'm also going to wait another few weeks until Windows 7 comes out, so that the system will already have it on it and also will be supplied with the Windows 7 version of the recovery disc.
#14
Good price if you want to pick up a well specced machine same day and you only have £330. Bad points: Acer charge £12 for the Win7 upgrade and the build quality isn't the best I've seen. Still a very nice machine though.

CPW are doing a lower spec Dell (better built) laptop instore too for £300 and Argos have the equally basic Acer rebadge eMachines for £250.

If you want quality build get the Dell.

whatsThePoint
That reason being they are mostly end of line, so the processor may be a couple of % slower than the replacement model for a price that is 20-33% lower. They still come with full 12 months warranty
Plus unlike Dell they don't bump the price up to make a small discount look like big sell price (unlike miket who never points out the price rises just before his so called big saving Dells deals)

I looked at the refurbs on there the other week when my parents wanted a laptop because they almost went ahead and bought one. The specs were more than a couple of % off from what I saw!
They all looked very old and very overpriced to me.

You aren't serious about that comment are you???????????????????????

I find it hard to believe anyone is still making computers with celeron processors. They belong in a museum. A decent processor only costs a few pounds more.

Firstly, I would like to say thanks OP, regardless of what the doubters say, in this current climate, this is a good deal, heat and rep added.

Secondly, it was this review from What Laptop magazine that has pointed me in the direction of Acers.... http://www.whatlaptop.co.uk/files/whatlaptop/Acer_Aspire_5536-643G50Mn_small.pdf

It received a GOLD award, something that I suppose it would not if build quality was poor.

I am no expert, and do not pretend to be. What are the opinions of the entry level Dell available now at £329, is it better than this Acer?
#19
whatsThePoint
Very serious, Dell's normal prices are always well over the top, so what appears to be a big saving is only a small % saving if anything when compared to similar spec PC's offered for sell elsewhere

Well you obviously missed last week's post about a Dell Mini 10 with HD screen, TV tuner, 3G WWAN card, XP for £208 delivered!

The following link shows which laptops Acer gives the Windows 7 upgrade with...

Delivery to the UK is £12.78

http://www.acer.com/windows7upgrade/eligible.html

The Acer 5332 does not seem to be included in the upgrade scheme but the 5338 is, as they are the same price and spec it might be worth going for the latter...
#24
I cant wait for windows 7 :)

First link original price £515 which is well over the top for this spec, thanks for the evidence to support my claims

go on then, find that spec for cheaper than £349 ...... I'll eat my hat, your hat and anyone else's hat if they want to send them to me if you do.
Me thinks my hat will be staying on my head :p
#26
whatsThePoint
Hope you like hats then
Not got time to search now as i've got to go out but quick 2 second search found this
http://www.cube247.co.uk/?customise=33
£40 more but better spec
So shouldn't be hard to find lower quality to match what the Dell has

what school did you go to? £399 PLUS £40 delivery, so £90 more expensive than the Dell - and the Dell was on sale at £349 a month ago. I think my hat is still safe

Still looking for all the hot deals that you've posted for PC's seeing as you think MikeT's so crap ....

bleurgh...... celeron. rather use an abacus

I did read all of this debate, so my quesiton is if acer is rubbish and e machine is all supposed to be rubbish, are compaq any gd?
#31
Should of got the dell deal last week.

whatsThePoint
Before Compaq and HP joined Compaq had the strictest quality control i've ever seen, I used to work for HP and we built stuff for Compaq and others, if one component failed during test the entire unit was rejected, other companies including HP would just have the failed component replaced
If they are still like that you'll be unlucky to get a bad one

HP have never, and won't ever, build anything for anyone else.

Compaq may well have rejected the whole unit off the line but it went through the debug loop and got the single faulty part replaced just like any other manufacturer - good parts don't get thrown in the bin. It's purely down to how efficent you think you can run your operation which method you choose.

If you buy an HP or a Compaq branded product then you'll have just as good a product as any other respected brand.

Disagree. I have had two since 2004 and 3 from last year and all still running fine. The charger pin broke on one of the older ones a few years ago but the 3 yr warranty got it fixed pronto. Im in the other boat then from the looks of it as I have found them reliable and customer service pretty decent (next day pickup for repairs)
#34
do they all have 3 yr warranties? Can't see where it says this.
