Good deal, crap laptop.

GFX card is frustrating. If it had an upgradeable one itd be alright, but it doesnt, sadly.

Anyone want mine? lol

I've got the model below this, a 5630, on my desk right now. It's not a system I'd recommend for its build quality. The screen is so loose that it flops back and forth, the screen doesn't trn off when the lid is closed, and two of the four USB ports are dead. It's a good system, but it's not one that's going to last for a long time. But it was cheap, so I'm not bothered.
#18
heat added.

Great laptop, pants software, so scrub it and get it the way you want it first......Can be hard to find drivers for some of the hardware, mainly the SD card reader)

Great price, i paid £400 for on well over a year ago, and after a format, partition, vista 64 install, and ram upgrade.........its a perfect all round laptop !

You know that is a power saving option in Windows right?

I have a 5920G which is one of the higher spec versions of this model. Without wanting to jinx it it has been pretty good so far. Up until recently.. as a crack has developed in the hinge and i'm going to have to send it back. Plastic hinges perhaps not the best idea...

Worth noting several of the comments in that review posted are user error... IE crashing and wireless driver problems are not down to the laptop lol.

Often the sensor that tells windows the screen is closing fails, so the screen stays on regardless of Windows settings.

Cheap, poor durability laptop. Buy it if you need a machine for a year.
#21
Personally, I would hold out until Windows 7 is fully released, which should be around October

Uh, no it's not. You can set the system to turn off, enter standby, hibernate, or do nothing when the lid's closed, but I don't ever recall seeing an option to turn the screen off when the lid closes. The laptop detects when the lid is closed and switches the screen off using a small pin shaped button near the point where the screen meets the base. With this laptop, the screen doesn't turn off because of the hinge problem with the lid, which slightly elevates the back of it sightly, holding it too high to push the button deep enough to trigger the switch.

had mine nearly 2 years without any issues im actually regretting buying the 3 year warranty as it been fine but who knows whats instore in last year probably nothing but then again that y we have insurance

all the snobs going on about save up a few hundred more and buy decent comp get a life ths is my 1st acer and wont be my last not because of quality or performance but because technology changes

 Sorry you're completely right lol.

Luckily mine does currently switch itself off..

Good deal. Purchased this laptop for the wife 6 months ago and paid £300 for a refurb. No worries once I installed Windows 7 Beta then RC. Get rid of the Acer stuff and just reinstall the odd driver or two.
#26
Had four Acers in the family now - two fell apart, one failed on 2nd day and went back for refund - won't buy another - cheap is only cheap if it is reliable.
#27
I have a 5920 with slightly better processor (T7300). Had it over a year now and it's a fantastic machine. Paid £400 for mine in 2008 and that was cheap then, so this gets a HOT from me!

Anyone know if Windows XP drivers are available for this, its usually sound that is the hardest to find. I hate Vista with a passion as i don't care about all the pretty bells and whistles, i just need software compatibility.

I would like to know this too, but have been told that if you wipe the Vista the warranty is invalid...is this true?

Is this delivered by Courier or ASDA truck?

Im using a 5920 now. Its ok, but as others have said, the quality isnt quite there.

Ive had it for just 6 months and the battery now lasts no more than 30 mins, plus the covering on the right hinge has cracked off.

I contacted Acer about the battery (over a month ago) and they were not only useless, but shockingly so - they really didnt care.

They were not willing to look at it under warranty as they class the battery as 'used', which means 50 mins (which it was giving at the time, using full battery saving settings too) is acceptable to them - even though my model was quoted as giving ~2.5hrs battery life.

For them to look at it, it would need to booked in as a chargeable repair!!!

I will never be buying Acer again and, unless you really cant afford the 10-20% extra for a decent brand, I would suggest you dont buy from Acer either.
#32
great price, if i wasnt buying a house i would have snapped this up... Cheers neo-vermin
#33
Cold, don't buy an Acer. They are cheap but you will have to replace it within 2 years, the build quality is dreadfull compared to Dell, Asus, Toshiba, Samsung or pretty much any other brand.

Lots of heat - rubbish comments.
I'm looking for a laptop for my daughter so if anyone knows any laptops better than this for around the £300 mark please let me know.
#35
I've just waited nearly 7 weeks for Acer to repair my faulty 5920 , nothing but excuse after excuse , bloody awful customer services .

Whilst it works it is OK , whilst it is broke it is a nightmare getting anything done .

The deal is good for an unreliable laptop .

It really depends what she wants it for. If its for office style apps then that will be fine, however the gfx card in it really will kill its ability to play games

I use this site http://www.notebookcheck.net/Comparison-of-Graphic-Cards.130.0.html to keep an eye on the different gfx cards. At the moment i'm looking at the Acer 6930 for my daughter - its more expensive at £545 but has a better gfx card and overall spec. Bets place I have found is acerdirect or laptopsdirect which I think are the same.http://www.acerdirect.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_6930G_Laptop_LX.AVB0X.001/version.asp?PID= link given as some of the 6930 have the 9300 card in which is worth - some have the 9600gt which is better but can't find one of those at the moment

If anyone believes they have found a better comparable laptop (even if its 10% more expensive) feel free to indicate but I bet you won't be able to ;) 20% puts it £100 more which is really pushing my budget but post anyway you never know I could be tempted :)

Pretty generic hardware so doubt there would be much of a problem.
Vista is fine I have not had a single compatibility issue in the whole time i've used Vista on my laptop. Running Windows 7 now though.

Penny-Pincher!!

I should hope not.. that doesn't sound like a fair contract. It's a hardware warranty not software.
