I've been looking for a cheap file/media server for home use and came across this.
It uses the latest Intel Xeon E3110 processor (equivalent to E8400) which is £125 on it's own! There are 4 HDD bays, 6 SATA ports and Gigabit ethernet - no HDD is included, but then again I don't really need the 160GB drives bundled with other low cost servers.

Cold from me I'm afraid - sorry if "stereotyping" but I wouldnt trust Acer to wash my clothes, never mind store my files. Better deals around, such as the Dell Poweredge that keeps coming up, or HP ML110 and 115s.

As you say, only saving grace is the processor.

I think this is a good deal, component price wise its great.

Component price wise it is good, but not many are going to buy it to "strip for parts" lol! ;)

I was put off the HP Proliant by the potentially high power consumption of the old Opteron 1214 (103W TDP). For 24/7 use they could prove to be false economy. I haven't seen any deals on Poweredge servers.

Comes and goes....certainly isnt live right now.

One of the HPs(110 I think?) is C2D not Opteron.

Actually, I was thinking of stripping it for parts! My desktop currently has an E2160 which I could swap for the E3110 (which frankly would be wasted on a home server).

i don't trust acer so much anymore
i had 3 pc's being send to and back from the repair centre with terrible technical support

Measured power consumption on my ML115 (Opteron) is 60-70W when fully active and 54W when idle under FreeNAS.

Voted HOT..

Much hotness!

Could the processor be stripped out and used in a consumer motherboard then?

Apparently the E3110 processor is the same as an E8400. My motherboard is a Gigabyte GA-G33M-S2 and the E3110 is listed as a compatible cpu.

anyone know how many watts this runs at?

Also can you add a normal pci-e for graphics and soundcard? Does the memory slots take non ecc like the ML115?

The server is great for the price, inside is an Gigabyte Server board with good expansions, the case is ok, and the CPU is great for the price, build quality seems very good.

Bad points :
Even though theres are 4 x 3.5" HDD bays, the server does NOT come with any brackets for them, without them, you CAN'T mount any hard drives, I spoken to Acer and they confirmed that they only ship the bracket(s) when drives are ordered at the same time, a normal HDD just wont fit without the brackets. Ordering the brackets is painful, takes forever to find the part number, then they works out around £10 each plus post, so 4 brackets plus post would set you back another £60-£70, cheaper and easier to buy something else.

The board only take ECC memory, expansion of the PCI-e 16X only runs at 8X (as shown clearly inside the case sticker)
I have removed the CPU and using it with an P5N-E SLI and works fine as its the same spec as an E8400.
