You like FEAR and you're from PyongYang?

Correct me if I'm wrong but that's in North Korea right?

Spark, is your name really Kim Jong Il? ;-)

Phil001 has been looking for a Dual core laptop and came up with the same one yesterday afternoon.
Looks like its about the best available for this price to me!

Acer site says yes, comet site says no!
As i said, there are some variations in the specs
#11
i think it does, its inbuilt. model number is a tl-50,i hope the specs are the same as the acer site
#12
Interestingly from thursday apparently some manufacturers will be including a voucher for a free copy of vista with new pc's/laptops. Look for good deals in the next couple of weeks as the lower end and older laptops are cleared out.
#13
Has anybody heard if Comet will be doing this Vista coupon?

This WONT run FEAR.

This WONT run FEAR.

not strictly speaking true as the minimum requirements for fear are within the spec of this box - including the Radeon Xpress 1100 graphics as it is Dx9 compliant. Of course you may not be able to run it on full performance settings but the spec of the unit is good enough to get well past the minimum sys requiremnts

I had the ATI X1100 in my last laptop (which i returned after it developed a fault), i installed Counter Strike Source, and i put it on bare minimum settings and it was pretty bad to play, it got about 25fps, and when there was action on screen it went real blotchy.

And Counter Strike Source requires less graphics power then FEAR.
#21
Bought it! have a rating!
#22
Hmmm, why do I need to ***** myself out to give a rating?!

Which is fine and I'm not disagreeing with you. Just that the laptop will run FEAR same as it will run CSS (although I bet it struggles extra hard with de_port :) ) - it meets both the minimum requirements. The laptop user's view as to whether it constitutes a good gaming box is something else - personally i'd go for something dedicated but thats coz i want faster gameplay, probably like yourself.
#24
There's no way this laptop is going to run FEAR at reasonable settings or framerate - while it may meet the system requirements, that means nothing. CSS is far less demanding than FEAR and furthermore it's more cpu limited than FEAR which is heavily gpu dependent - this means CSS gets more of a benefit from the dual core processor whereas FEAR is more reliant on the graphics card.

i think we are agreeing broadly  . it does meet the minimum reqs but like i said - personally i wouldnt use it for a gaming box, as clearly neither would most.

in terms of a deal - to get bakc on topic - its a decent one :)

Excuse my ignorance but what is this FEAR?

It's a PC game that came out about a year ago - used as a kind of "standard" when talking about graphics capabilities.

Hi, Can somebody clarify something for me before I order one of these ? I understand it comes with Windows Media Center Edition but when you look at the spec list on the Comet website, it says something about it not being able to view or record TV ? So would you be able to watch telly on this laptop or not ?? Thanks

I assume that it just means it has no TV card in it.
So unless you buy a TV tuner of some sort, no you can't watch tv on it!

Cheers,
Phil.

Perhaps, but your initial comment is completely misleading as it suggests this machine is capable of running high spec PC games when it blatantly is not.

Is this the best laptop going at the moment in terms of value for money with good specs?

I know there have been various threads on Reconditioned machines.

Also with this being at Comet, surely that's another plus point

hmm...

now what would be the point in sticking Windows MCE on a laptop that doesn't have a TV card ??

seems bizarre quite frankly !?

Well, specs on Comet site vary from those on the Acer site, but neither of them state that it has a TV card.

The whole point of the media centre edition was to essentially transform your machine into a one stop media entertainment system. A TV card is usually a given when a machine comes pre-installed with the Windows MCE operating system. In fact, when MCE was released, one of the main selling features was having the convenience of being able to watch telly on your computer! People were literally tripping over remote controls in PC World for goodness sake.

On the plus side though, one could argue this laptop also gives you xp pro as opposed to the bog standard home edition but hey ?

A machine running MCE without a TV card is like selling a tortoise without a shell .:giggle:

Not at all - MCE has various advantages over the standard Home ignoring the media features as it's much closer to Pro than it is Home giving you features like IIS although you still can't join domains without breaking the media extenders. I couldn't care less about the media features but if MCE was a cheap upgrade I'd still take it.

hmm...

that is why I said :

" On the plus side though, one could argue this laptop also gives you xp pro as opposed to the bog standard home edition but hey ? "

But I would personally have liked a TV card as media centre (even the name is a bit of a giveaway) should be used to its full potential, in that, you should be able to access...ahem.....media such as say......TV ? :p

Price now £489.99 online with free delivery.
Im a bit annoyed as mine is coming today and i paid £499.99 (-quidco)

Might contact customer services later, especially if it has the 100GB hard drive and not 120GB as on the Comet site. Might be able to get something out of them!
