The specification on Comet website is definitely wrong (it's certainly lighter than 3kg :) and should have basic webcam 0.3MP ).Try this link for spec :

Seems a good spec/price.
#2
Tried promo code and it works, brings price down to £312.55
#3
Thanks for you help  , I will edit it.
#4
Really good price - shame no HDMI out but otherwise good spec. Heat added:thumbsup:

Nice to see a deal on a proper laptop rather than one of those silly netbook things for a change!
#6
Awesome - ordered!
#7
For the webcam, you better confirm with Comet to avoid disappointing.

Are you serious ?
It seems to have 2 USB sockets but is that a massive problem ? If you need more, you can get USB splitter from Poundland. Bear in mind the price, you can't have everything for £300....you get a lot anyway.
#16
Just what I'm looking for:thumbsup:
#17
I wonder if this is the start of many laptop deals before and after Christmas. I may just wait and see if a better deal pops up. However this deal is pretty good

Usb hubs aren't good for powered devices or fast transfer though. I struggle with 4 USB slots. But as you say this is the very lowest end of the price range so you can't expect everything.

Personally I wouldn't ever buy an Acer again having experienced such appauling warranty repair service recently.

Just ordered one. Very good price for the spec. If you wait for a better deal you would never get around to buying one!

very good point but I've been looking for a bargain laptop for 9 years now! to replace my 286 20 gb amstrad! I'm not just going to throw my money away on one of the colour screen jobbies!

seriously though heat and rep added, think I'll order one!
#21
Looks like an OK spec for the price, though not astonishing. Killer for me would be Acer's reputation for poor reliability and backup (second hand received wisdom but does keep cropping up on here).
#22
Good price, shame it is an Acer.

I had one and within a few weeks the hinge cracked, the same happened to a friends Acer. I did a search on Acer cracked hinge and was surprised at the results.
#23
I'm typing this on 3 year old acer aspire 1640z with a pentium single core 1.8ghz and 2gb ram, has been flawless since day one, have just installed windows 7, and runs like a dream.
This seems like a good deal and Acer are no worse than any other laptop manufacturer.

I've just collected from the local Comet store. I can't have a good look at it until the family is gone to bed, but there is no webcam. It looks like a nice machine for very little money. I suspect the webcam was swapped for W7.

Total cost:

£329.00
less 5% Comet Voucher (£16.45) = £312.55
less 3.5% Quidco cashback (£10.94) = £301.61
less 1% credit card cashback (£3.13) = £298.48

5920 series by any chance?
#27
at what point do you get the chance to enter the voucher code? I'm in process of buying this and I'm currently at the page where you enter your card details...is it befre or after this screen? Don't want to pay for it if discount code isn't entered!

Thanks in advance

Hot btw OP
#28
Just before that screen. It's in the middle at the top.
#29
Belter... Tempted myself!

Shame there's no web-cam as that's what the OH was after, but you can pick a bog standard cam for next to nothing anyway.

Gets heat and well deserved!

Interesting indeed. We can all have opinions based on a sample of one but this starts to add some real statistical validity. Looks like I did the right thing when I passed on the Acer and paid just a little more for a similar Toshiba for my daughter, who has an unfortunate record with most electronics.

If I read the report correctly the Acer has poorer reliability, though not by a massive amount. However, where they seem to fall down quite substantially is in the backup they offer if you do have a problem. I guess that's less of a problem for tech heads but would be a big issue for the rest of us.

Shame really as they are smart machines at very competitive prices and widely available too.
#31
The latest blurb from Ebuyer features the same machine with a webcam, an additional 2GB RAM and a larger 250GB hdd for £399.97. I would never pay that much for a machine with only 2 USB ports.

The Comet deal is still way in front. It is a cheap and cheerful entry-level machine.
#32
cheers for this, passed it on to a m8 who has bought one

Have reserved one of these but just come back from Comet without it as my wife & I are going round & round in circles over whether to get it for my lad for Christmas or not. Even though we tell him that his X-Box is for games & the laptop will be for homework, surfing etc he still may use it to play the odd game (not the latest 3D ones, just older role-playing games). So I'm thinking we should probably get him one with a dedicated graphics card but they are a lot more expensive & as he won't play recent games on it, I'm wondering how relevant this is. Now, there was a Compaq CQ61-324SA there with a dedicated graphics card for £370 so not a huge amount more. Rambling post but if anyone could offer advice it would be gratefully received.

According to HP specification this laptop has NOT got dedicated graphic card (it has more memory, hdmi port but much slower cpu comparing to the Acer).

4500MHD will be fine for all older games

yep, quality manufacturer... but it is way over £100 more expensive (add additional charge for Windows 7 Upgrade) and will not perform any better than the Acer
#38
Thanks for the advice folks. Looks like I should go for the Acer unless anyone else has any other thoughts?

Is this better than this one from Tesco ?

Probably - Tesco option is about the same price if you take into account Clubcard points (deals value anyway) but this has a faster processor, which I think is worth more than the extra GB of RAM.

Not sure whether to go for this over a Dell - I remember Acer build quality being pretty poor a few years back, but apparently they've improved?

Also wondering about this Ebuyer 'extra value' deal with no OS, assuming I could get a cheap copy of Windows as a mature student. Would be a great spec for less than £400, but a bit dubious about the make!
