Mixed bag, imo. It's an Acer and has to run "Acer Empowering Technology" (which slows down dramatically) because without, it won't run properly. Good = dedicated number pad and 15.6 screen, processor, ram, hd, cam, price. Not so good = graphics, mouse pad, service (when needed), depending on Acer software rather than Windows alone, which makes the use of other OS's difficult.

Pardon? My 5930G runs fine with Linux, Mac OS X and Windows XP/Vista/7 with no problems. No Acer software installed whatsoever.

The Pentium Dual Core name is used for products that are based on an older technology or are cut-back in some way (i.e. made cheaper). The T4200 is a Penryn-based Core 2 design but with 1MB cache rather than the normal 2MB or 3MB. It also runs on an 800MHz FSB rather than 1066MHz of the top-end Core 2 Duos (though the mid-range (e.g. T6400) still have 800MHz FSB). The T4200 is essentially a T6400 with less L2 cache. Hence, the T4200 is a perfectly good chip.

has this got a graphics card ?
It doesn't have a dedicated graphics card so it won't be up to playing the latest games. Older ones will be fine (e.g. Sims 2).

Not a great deal at all, you get better offers on the Dell website

I think they are similar but the Z version is slightly better... one thing i noticed was the z version has 4 usb ports as opposed to 3. Also i noticed that both have 1MB cache... is that bad?

Yeah but some people won't have the ability or time to be able to set their computer up to run without & I have to agree with it running it does slow them down.

Plus, I've had two Acer's now & they've both died, I simply can't bring myself to get another.

But hot deal, as I am sure that mine were the exception (I hope)

For £50 more how does this one compare? (I know smaller hard drive but still more than enough for me, but also has laptop bag, mouse and free 3 mobile broadband)

Is this a specific Argos contract build? The specs are not listed on the ACER website. 5738 on ACER is a C2D (6400). The Z is a new model - but does not list 500gb HDD with 4gb memory...

Does anyone have to model number? eg AS5738Z-423G16MN

Indeed it is... i too am on it :-D

However, the argos site does not advertise it as the z version and also says it only has 3 usb ports... which it quite clearly doesn't. Also, have you tried running dxdiag on the laptop... it says only 3000mg RAM... is this correct as it was advertised as having 4GB.

Many thanks to the OP for pointing out such a hot deal!!!! :-D

There are issues with any 32bit operating system seeing all of the 4gb installed.

When you first switch on your laptop it should tell you to burn a copy of the factory settings (on 13 cds or 2 dvds...) and also give you the option of burning a copy of the applications and drivers. I don't know whether that helps at all :S

Nope, it's a Penryn chip and therefore Core 2 Duo. You're getting confused by the name; Core 2 Duo is a dual core chip, just C2D is the premium brand name, Pentium Dual Core is the mid-range brand name. There is overlap in the technology. As far as I know you don't get the old Core Duo chips any more; even the Celeron Dual Core are now based on Core 2 tech.

Ta, bit misleading of them to have the BD logo on the machine although to be fair I wasn't aware of it anyway before buying.
