voted hot due to blu ray, it appears to have dual dvi instead of hdmi. http://www.trustedreviews.com/laptops/review/2008/01/24/Acer-Aspire-7720G/p2

TBH the Blu ray was a bonus feature as well as the 17" screen as I wasnt too fussed about those bits, me and my other half wanted something that was pretty versatile playin games (me) and surfing facebook(her) and photoshopping/ebaying crap for under £400.. The budget was £600 but after my cluth went it changed to £400 =P... Hope nowt else breaks else I might have to make do with a ZX Spectrum ^^

The spec looks good for the average JoeBloggs.
I may have to upgrade from my ZX81 ;-)

This is a great piece of equipment. Web cam is excellent.
i bought this brand new about a year ago from pc world for £489.00 after a price match. I had few problems initially due to firmware error. The one I got is the 3rd replacement product. I had the same problem with all three of them but with a simple firmware upgrade the problem was sorted. I think these ones are the one people who have returned due to the firmware issue. I recently bought one of these refurb one to take abroad to my brother in law. I used it to see wether there are any problems but none.
I can recommend this without any hessitation. for laptop with this specification you have to pay a lot i believe. The refurb one came in a non branded card board box with charger and battery. That is all what i had withe brand new one.
So I would say go for it.

PS. this laptop is loaded with acer's utilities which i think slows down the machine. I have disabled most of them for a smooth running.

Lol I've bought one of these and hopefully it should arrive in 3-5 days. I bet I end up with one of ur returns =P

Thanks for letting me know about the firmware issue as I dont know that much about the technical side of things and its first stop is going to one of my Uber-PC boffin mates to give it the once over =)

Hope this helps out the people who dont know what all the fancy numbers mean =P (Like me)

there was no firm ware issue on the refurb one I bought so you should be alright. The issue I had was when the laptop was starting up after say over night shut down It freezes on with a black screen with a blinking minus mark on the top left corner. then disconeect & pull the battery up and restart it. It works fine after you can restart, shut down no problem but if you leave it for like few hours of and switch it on you have the problem. If you expereince this it is a firmware issue. What you need to do is download latest firmware from acer website and install it as ADMINISTRATOR. making sure to leave it on until it update the firmware.
I hope this helps if you have the same problem.
I very much doubted you have any problems.
Hope you enjoy your nepw Laptop

Technically it`s not firmware, it`s a "Bios update"

I to had one of these when the DIxons deal was on (with 5%off)

Had the same booting problem when left and after the bios update all is now fine.

Awsome piece of kit for the money btw

P.S.

Yes it has a DVI connector instead of HDMI but you can get a DVI to HDMI adaptor.

Oh and another thing not mentioned
The hdd caddy has room for a spare 2.5" drive in a piggy back configuration ;-)

Yeah totally agree with wolfie1969, it is the bios update you have to do, not firmware. these days I am playing with my blackberry storm with installing hybrids, that where i got this firmware stuck in my mind. sorry for the confusion

You can buy DVI to HDMI cable for about £2.00 from Home bargains shop.

BTW can someone explain "piggy back configuration"
Cheers

I had about 5 different refurbs from Currys/PCWorld and all had "hidden" faults (faults which don't show straight away, such as lid closure switch doesn't work, some keys are don't respond, etc.). In my opinion, these are returned faulty laptops which are send out if they switch on. The testing is left to you, the customer. Expect to have your laptop in repair at least once (Techguys aren't fast repairers either, lol).

The cradle underneath the laptop that holds the hdd, has an empty slot next to it, to insert a second hdd.
So in effect you can put a second hard drive on with no need for an external enclosure.

In english i stil have the original 320 gig hdd, and i have at the moment installed a 120 gig in the spare slot. Obviously you can install what ever size you want, it`s just i had the 120 gig one knocking about.
Oh and it dosn`t invalidate the warranty either
