Yes but their after sales customer service is pants! You can also earn nectar/ipoints with amazon, so no need to buy from Laptops Direct!

from my own experience I wouldn't recommend Acer....the DVD rom on mine failed within 6 months ...went back to Acer under warranty and was returned minus the battery pack, minus all the facia stickers and with a malfunctioning keyboard.
Was sent back to Acer with mighty complaint and then after almost 4 weeks was returned saying they had replaced the motherboard but when I booted it up I discovered they had replaced the Core 2 7200 Cpu with a much inferior Core 2 5500 model and reduced the ram from 2gb to 1 gb....still no stickers and a battery pack that was not the original.

So in a nutshell I have now successfully had a full refund and bought a HP laptop that I find superior in every way.

I bought my last laptop from the site, with no problems.

But to be honest I never had any reason to contact after-sales support so I guess I wouldn't know about that!!!

This is a much better deal. Just upgrade to the trulife screen and at least the 6 cell battery (bearing in mind that the 9 cell will stick slightly out of the back):

I've had the mis pleasure of a few acers, first one is now unusable because of a broken gfx card and the second one also had loads of problems. Acer support is terrible, they tried both times to ignore the extended warranty and both laptops spent more time being fixed than used. Every time they actually came back they had managed to break something else. I would never buy one again.

Yup, couldn't agree more.
LaptopsDirect's customer service is none existant, and I'd strongly recommend shopping anywhere else instead.

Oh, and be careful... LaptopsDirect.co.uk is the same company as AcerDirect.co.uk.
Same company, same appalling customer service.

Now trot along to Amazon (or anyone else instead !) or grab yourself a Dell laptop instead.

I wouldn't buy another Acer product again. Bought one laptop last year and it died within the first few hours. Took it back to Comet who wanted me to send it back to Acer!!

I just laughed at them and demanded an exchange there and then.

Now this second laptop has lasted 11 months, left it on a defrag and came back after about an hour to find the top of the laptop case had melted by the keyboard, a smell of burning and lots of error messages on a black screen.

Now this laptop is back with Acer, they've had it for 4 weeks now.

THINK before you buy ACER.

You can do better with Dell.

If you phone them up, a lot better.

I am after a laptop and have been thinking about the £799 Acer gemstone laptop but can't afford it now so am looking for something a bit cheaper.

I was interested in this one which I have had my eye on a good price. I am not so keen on Dells but people experience of this one seems to be good and Acer not so good so I am now looking at the delll which has twice the memory.

So whats the difference in processors - ie how does the AMD compare to the Dual Core 2 on the Acer.

Also will any of these run games which are a few years old ie Farcry etc. I realise they are not going to run anything modern.

Also with the dell the comment was to phone them up and you can get a better deal - what we talking about here?
#12
it looks like a good spec laptop, But i would rather spend a bit more or sacrifice some of the spec to go for a better brand
#13
Acer do their role in the channel perfectly, and that is masses of cheap **** for people who don't want to spend a fortune on a notebook. If you want quality you can't go wrong with Samsung or HP Pavilions.
#14
Was going to buy this as I have been looking for a new laptop ever since my screen display seems to be on it way out. Having read the comments above though, I have been put off! Will have to wait a bit longer I guess..

Bought my father an Acer that I saw on this forum a while ago from Amazon, had no problems with it. My brothers ancient VAIO died last night, so this (or rather I think the same spec Acer but with 2Gb RAM and a 120Gb disk for £449.99) would make a perfect email/surf/football manager replacement machine. But Vista won't be staying on it. I'll be re-installing XP Pro.

Have used and maintained 50+ Acer laptops over the last few years, including my own personal one. I have had probably 3/4 fail in this time and had to be returned under warranty, one got sent back the same as it was sent one got fixed after about 3 weeks and the other was never seen again! So yeh the laptops are ok, the after sales is poor!

At the end of the day a laptop is a laptop is a laptop, go to PC world have a play feel the quality of the plastics etc then buy it online somewhere cheaper. Just dont forget the extended warranty whatever make you choose!

Id echo most the comments in here, ACER are terrible. Poor customer service, poor machines. Terrible repair times. For your own sake stay away.

Nothing wrong with Acer, good quality and good prices in my opinion. This particular laptop suffers from a small-ish 80gb hard drive though. I would recommend and minimum of 120gb as they often add a partition to the drive and you'll end up filling it up quickly.

The partitioning is silly, but it's easy to merge them, Vista has the tools built in (right-click my computer, manage, delete unused partition, extend main one). I did this on the 17" Acer Tesco laptop the other day.

I totally agree! Cheap parts, cheap flimsy plastic. You're much better off spendng £50 more for a TOP brand - Avoid dodgy cheap Acer and their poor customer after-sales service.

You have been warned!

I bought this Acer for my son who is starting college. I played with it for a few days before handing it over. Making sure it worked & installing various anti-virus, anti-spyware packages etc.

I like it and he thinks it is fabulous, especially the cool looks (that's humanities students for you!).

I ordered it from laptopsdirect without any issue. The Acer 3 year warranty extension seemed a reasonable price so I got that too.

I had considered Dell but I wanted a laptop within a few days, not the "maybe next month" delivery date they were quoting. I understand they still have delivery issues so take this into consideration if you have been swayed by the "avoid Acer" comments.

For me, Acer provide good value packages. I asked around and the comments I got from people who work in large IT departments pretty much matched what MiniChr1s has said.

If Acer isn't the brand to get what is?

suggestions would be appreciated

i had my eye on toshiba laptop the other day and was told by a few people in the know that toshiba, and samsung have good reputations.

saying that i bought a acer 3003lmi for about 3 years and the dvd-r drive has just broken, so i may buy the toshiba afterall. think i'll stay away from acer, i only bought mine because i wanted a decent size hard drive and dvd writer. sad i know but i have learnt from the first time i bought one,

I was going to apologise for hijacking the thread but it seems Acer laptop opinions/cricitism are on topic now!

I've had mine since February/March and so far so good, no major problems (fingers crossed)!

But on your experience I may have to look at getting an extended warranty now..

My brother recently bought an Inspiron; they swapped out the 1GB of RAM for 2GB and upgraded it to the 9 cell rather than 4 cell battery (about three times the total capacity) for about £30 extra. Total cost around £420.

A friend also got about £300 off one of their top-spec machines a couple of weeks ago.

Dell also have second-to-none long-term support - I can still get drivers for all of the ancient Dell machines that I use.

BTW, I know a number of people who are getting on very well with Acers.

yes mate..that's the one....it's not so much that the laptop was naff but more a case of Acer so called technicians messing up repairs by causing more damage and "stealing" superior components and replacing them with inferior spec models.....so Acer is now on my black list...I would NEVER trust them with a warranty repair.

Fair enough, but i work in a large IT department and i dont know anyone that would recomend one.

Get a Dell or a HP.

Seems like a good deal. I have noticed a lot of people criticising Acer. I'm sure people have had bad experiences with all brands of laptops... not just Acer. They are just the focus in this thread. I think Acer regularly receive good reveiws in WhatLaptop magazine.

Seems like a safe bet with 1 year collect & return warranty. If they are as unreliable as some people suggest, then it will surely break down within the first year and you're covered.

My company and a few friends took advantage of the acers from Tesco and they have worked great over the last couple of years....only thing, my other accidentally knocked over a glass of ribena over his so I'm waiting to see if it will still work!!

otherwise I quite like them, comet have a decent deal on a lower spec £299
