Just spotted this online. Seems a good price for a netbook with HDMI port? Thinking of trading in my clunky old laptop and getting another £50 off making £149.99. Instore price is £219.99 so need to reserve and collect for £199.99. Despite the website description below, it DOES have a webcam - i've just called them to check.

Alternatively, this is available for home delivery at Currys for £189.99 using the code 10POUND (£10 off £199 spend) before midnight tonight. I've just done a dummy order to test the code and it works.

Was £299.99 (16/09/10 - 30/09/10) The Acer Aspire One 521 netbook has the power-sipping AMD V-series V105 Processor and comes with Microsoft's Genuine Windows® 7 Starter operating system pre-installed. A useful 160GB hard drive provides plenty of on-the-move storage space, whilst the 1GB of installed DDR3 RAM ensures that everyday applications can run smoothly.

Stylishly finished in black, the Acer Aspire One 521 netbook is built around a 10.1" LCD screen, with low-energy LED backlighting contributing towards a great battery life of up to six hours. This slim and lightweight machine can be used comfortably over extended periods, with a near full-sized keyboard making lengthy typing sessions an effortless experience.

Connectivity in the Acer Aspire One 521 also impresses, with the inclusion of WiFi technology, an HDMI port for hooking up to an external display, a 5-in-1 media card reader, three USB 2.0 ports, an RJ-45 Ethernet port, and more.

Enjoy a fun and reliable computing experience on the move without feeling weighed down, by choosing this good-looking Acer Aspire One 521 netbook!

why is this cold, is it not a good deal?
#2
How is this for media playback; some of the previous Acer Aspire One netbooks have suffered when streaming HD video from the web, so is the HDMI output actually worth bothering with? If it is, then this is a good deal, my D150 model is still going strong and is perfect for doing everyday stuff like web browsing, office stuff etc.

This review is for a different processor. I doubt you get the same result on this slow V105 and with only 1gb ram. You would need to upgrade.
#5
can you trade in an old desktop to get £50 off?
#6
Good deal for the dough!
#7
you need to watch out as 99% of the reviews for this are for the better spec'd processor, i was on the verge of buying one at the higher price untill i noticed.

so doesnt quite seem worth it considering that you will probably get as much if not more on ebay. might help some people but £50 for a laptop with those processors may not be a good deal for many

Well i've just been and bought one and traded in my old 4 year old celeron laptop with a dieing battery. Reserve and collect worked fine. Managed to refuse all the offers from the shop assistant to buy extra software...

I've just downloaded a couple of full 1080p trailers, and i'd rate playback with Windows Media player as 9/10. Very smooth on all but the fastest moving scenes where there is a really minimal amount of jerkiness that you have to look really closely to see.

The webcam is also quite good at 1.3megapixels. Battery life is showing approx 5hrs30 minutes at full charge.

I like the fact that the battery doesn't stick out of the back like some netbooks. I am not too keen on the trackpad buttons but theyll do for the price. Speakers are, comparitively speaking, surprisingly good given how slim this netbook is.

I'm very happy with this laptop for £150, but i think it would still be a good buy for £200. Use code 10POUND at Currys for £10 off until 23:59 tonight. It works- i've just checked it.

Guys I want something very small and portable that would allow me to read ebooks/browse the net. What would be faster at doing this a netbook like this or a tablet pc (ipad types and stuff)

It wasn't £150 though was it? You even paid more than full £200 as your laptop that you traded would have been worth more than £50 on the secondhand market.

Was you blinded becuase it was shiny?

Its always the same on the internet innit. No matter what you do theres always some faceless person who thinks they know better. Sorry i dont think i ever mentioned what my laptop was so i dont know how you can know its worth more than £50. I certainly wouldnt have paid more than that for it. Glad to see the back of it.

I sold a 3 year old Acer with the case half-broken for £120 (I bargained them down from £150 to £100 but they insisted on paying £20 for the new keyboard I put in it) - judging from the terms of the trade in Currys wouldn't have given me £50 for it ;)

Still it was your laptop and if you had no need for it who can argue against trading it in?

This was a good deal - please keep posting :)

I had a similar experience with my first post two weeks ago. I bought a Samsung tv for what I thought was a good deal but Dixon's were awaiting stock ('in stock within 28 days' was quoted) so everyone voted it cold. My tv arrived 4 days after ordering and I've still not seen it cheaper anywhere.

With regards to your post, it's sorted my wife's Christmas present and I'll be forever grateful so don't give up on the posts.

Besides, a troll didn't stop the Three Billy Goats Gruff...

It's always the same on the internet innit. Some noob comes on a forum and throws their toys out of the pram over some innocuous comment any sane person would ignore, threatening not to continue to bless us with their glorious presence as if the forum hadn't been running perfectly fine for 5 years without their ever-so-important personal contribution thank you very much :p

Whats the video chipset in this like?
Can play SD + 720P video content no problem, 1080P is almost perfect (make sure you install Flash 10.1 streaming from YT, iPlayer etc will be fine then).
Most older games are playable (with detail turned down in the more graphic intensive ones).

I wish people that don't know what they are talking about would just shut up and stop feeding people bad advice.

If you're in the know, why don't you know the V105 is faster than pretty much every other single core Atom that you find in most other netbooks (especially the N270's and recently N450's that are everywhere), except for those that cost a LOT more than this?
Oh right, it's because you just compared the CPU frequency... I guess a man with 1,200 Sheep is poorer than a man with 1,600 Sheep, using your logic, eh Welshy?

Just ignore the idiots, this deal is over 250 degrees (and rising), so a lot of people appreciated you posting it (including me, as I've just bought one for a friend).

I've posted good and bad (in some peoples opinions) deals, but I really couldn't care less what the few negative people said, as long as I feel I helped someone, somewhere, get a good deal, I'm happy.

If you actually read the thread, you would understand that you couldn't trade that laptop in with Currys. They stipulate that the traded in machine must have a certain processor, be working to the point of loading the OS, a battery, working power supply and a CD drive. The specifications they state mean that the any laptop which reach even the minimum required, would be worth way more than £50 they are offerring. Go away and think about it you wally.

I though the deal was good and voted hot. I just pointed out what I thought was obvious, in that he paid more than he could have.

some people do have rubbish old laptops that arnt really worth selling so £50 is a good trade in, plus its less hassle than ebay

The Acer is a fair bit more powerful (better CPU, better GPU, faster RAM, LED backlight, 802.11N, HDMI out). And considering all this, battery life is supposed to be pretty decent.
Not sure on Bluetooth, PC World says no, the Acer site says yes. But I know Acer have a have certain configurations of their products not on their site (none of the 521's on the Acer site have the CPU on this netbook).

All in all, this is a much better machine.
