It's ideal just for surfing and email.

This laptop actually has a modem so your Mum could just plug the phone jack directly into the laptop and it would work how it does now.
says out of stock
really could she just do that! wow cos she doesnt need to work it wireless she would just use it at home

i managed to get one when they were in stock.

I am chuffed.

so ddo you think its a good deal then for what she needs it for.

someone mentioned upgrading the ram or something would i need to do that for what she needs it for?

i am so happy if I have made a good buy I really am !!!!!!
Hi there,
Seems like you did pretty well as they are sold out now!
We've got an Acer - 3 years old now - and the build quality is good. Pretty much any new laptop will be sufficient for browsing, email, etc.
As for wireless, you will need a wireless router/modem, but you say she is on dial up, it might be worth looking into broadband as it's getting cheaper all the time and you may even get a wireless router thrown in.

Hope this helps.
If you do need to upgrade the RAM try - they are not necessarily the cheapest but very reliable and if you go to the website using the laptop it detects what sort of RAM you need so you know you are getting the right RAM for the computer. :)
you guys are worth your weight in gold I am learning so much through this site!

Yes she said she would like broadband so If I look online for a deal for her possibly with a free router do you literally plug in the router and will teh lap top detect the router connection and away she goes?

I am a computer newbie but loving it!!

RAM is the virtual memory I think, the space needed for the software stored on the comp? Im learning too so would also be interested to know if I am anywhere near right lol
hopefully someone will tell us! :)

Think someone used a desk analogy in another thread so I shall do the same. Imagine RAM as your desk. Each application you open, document you view etc is like a book on your desk. When something is stored on RAM it is quicker to open/run much like having a book on your desk is quicker to get to than say your shelf. So the bigger your desk (RAM) the more books (processes, apps etc) it can hold and make your work quicker (computer faster) :)
ooh gotcha
clever analogy
can you explain how i set mum up on wifi please now [grin]

do i need to buy a dongle thingy like i read on another thread ????
thanks!!! by the way for your explanation
should i look for broadband with free router? any ideas?
nope you dont need to buy a dongle as the laptop already has a wireless card built in. I dont know if this is allowed but here is a link to a very good guide on moneysavingexpert.

Hope this helps
aw thanks tons

would you mind if i sent you a message if i get stuck!!!
not at all i may be out but ill reply asap
3littlemonkeys buy this -

It will speed up the computer a lot, I don't think you will be able to manage with the RAM that comes with the laptop.
thanks sorry being dim but how does that memory then get fitted? total novice and more here! thanks!
