Gone down by anotehr £100 again... :x

I bought my aspire 5685 for £799 2 weeks ago... I think I'm starting to see a pattern here.

I recently played Supreme Commanders (demo) with default settings on this machine and it runs pretty smoothly!

In fact I had to return the first one I bought because it had one dead pixel on the screen and argued valiantly to Comet for an on the spot exchange because Acer policy was that teh dead pixel had to be bang on the centre of the screen. :-D

word of advice...phone comet customer services, or if bought instore their CS...and they will usually refund you the price deduction...I paid £779 for mine and they agreed to refund me £79.01 when I phoned today.

omg what a nightmare i'm having.

i had placed an order with pcnextday and through several days of emails they cancelled my transaction on the basis i couldn't prove i was the credit card owner.

what a downer.

only for my mood to lighten up after seeing this gem (thank you currychops for finding another great deal!) and i placed an order just right now, literally 5 mins ago.

i have made the order through quidco and i got to the last page (i have the order number) but now after logging in to see my order history it is completely blank! i don't even have an email from them confirming my order!

argh i suppose i'll have to wait until tommorow!

voted hot and rep (i'm getting the hang of this forum now), thanks alot.

I posted this when it was £779 and it was amazing specs even at that price got a luke warm reception then.

But people seem to prefer low spec pricey Dell's like this

http://www.hotukdeals.com/deal/21303/dell-inspiron-6400-laptop-1-6dual-c

Weird

anyways i was definitely gonna buy one the price crash is a much apreciated bonus

Voted hot and repped.

Hmm... How is that low spec when it's about £170 cheaper? Not that this isn't a good deal :) Thanks for the pointer currychops!

Thanks for the tip... I will give it a try but might not end up successful because it is over 14 days now since I bought the laptop... :S

This owns the pants off that dell, well worth the extra cash.

Is the graphics card here actually dedicated? As the website says it is dynamic/shared?

Theres no mention of a inbuilt bluetooth with a VOIP phone, firewire socket, 1.3 megapixel camera/webcam on this???????

Battery life also looks a little low at 2hrs!

Whats the sound output on this? i.e Can it output DD 5.1 to an amp?
#18
Checked this instore yesterday. Does have camera and dedicated graphics....oh and hard to find any other lappy at this price with the T7 processor. Tried comparisons but cant get better....oh and if you after warranty get it direct from Acer........loads cheaper especially if you get Acer Advantage Light (£50-60) for 3 years (only downside is it takes longer to get repaired) !
#19
Acer warranty is cheaper then most.

The Graphics is dedicated - and will play any single game on the market at present, the 'dynamic' thing refers to borrowing extra memory from the RAM if needed - you can usually set this to however much you like or totally disable it.
[mod]#20
I think the graphics card in this has 128meg onboard with the rest being borrowed as needed although Acer list it as the SE which may be 64meg only but Currychops should be able to tell us for sure as he has one ;-)

The spec for this is quite impressive and with the extra £100 off its started to catch my attention, the only thing is the battery life which is listed at 2hrs, again real life may be different chrrychops??

Voted a hot deal even if its not got a dell badge ;-)
#21
Just to say thanks currychops,

phoned comet and received my refund of £79.01

I'm reading from the label..the graphics card is a NVIDIA GEFORCE GO 7600 SE 256MB VRAM...in the book this is described as having 128/256MB of external GDDR VRAM...so the ram is dedicated, not shared, and the card on this model is the 256 mb version of the card...if you want further clarification you may wish to GOOGLE for further info.

As for battery life ..I've not tested as I've only used on power supply..2 - 2.5 hours seems to be the norm and that's fine for my use.
#24
In most cases, I dont take much notice on the stated battery life - most core duo and C2D 15.4" laptops are 2-3hrs -all vary on the conditions of use.

this link discusses this lappy....there seems to be a lot of confusion about the graphics card....so maybe my last post is incorrect?

Just a thought but could you buy this laptop from woolworths and get 5% cashback through quidco?

Looks good....but...bit confused about "Dynamic" graphics. How does that differ from dedicated?

No mention of dual layer on DVD writer.

I see no reason why not...I'm assuming you could still return the laptop to a Comet outlet if anything was unsatisactory?

Can someone who has this laptop, please verify the screen resolution, hard drive speed, and is the ram PC667 or PC533.

I found more info here it looks like a 7600SE has 256 mb dedicated ram.

Can someone here check thir 5685 and confirm the 256 mb, is it listed in System details ?

http://forums.hexus.net/showthread.php?t=93865

Heres some of it to read, the high frame rate is good.

Aye, £879.99 from Comet website/call centre, £899.99 in store (but be aware I intially had issues with their in-store stock levels as this is a new model). That's cheaper than everywhere else I've looked to date, cheaper even than the 5683/5684 models are going on most websites.

Which Toshiba is that? I did look at some Satellites but in the end opted for the Acer, again, I thought it had the best all-round specs for what I wanted to use it for, and am quite pleased with it so far. The slot-loading DVD drive is rather nifty

The 5685 has a GeForce Go 7600 SE with 256mb's dedicated RAM. I was able to play a FEAR: Extraction Point demo with most of the detail levels set to high, ditto with a Medieval 2: Total War demo, and both were fairly comfortable. Naturally, tinkering with a few settings should produce better framerates. Company of Heroes, on the default settings (in which most of the detail levels set to high), indicated a 25fps average/60fps maximum on the performance test, and that mainly comprises an animated cut-scene rather than the in-game graphics, which shouldn't be as demanding. Obviously, for gaming it's not going to be as good as a desktop or dedicated gaming laptop but the price/performance ratio for this kind of laptop seems pretty impressive.

wohoo sorted, i checked my email and 'my account' today and it was fine. quite silly really how they take up to 6-8 hours to email me. i should be getting mine on tuesday so i'll try and give as much feedback as i can.

missed out £10 not buying from woolworths argh.

also where do i get the 'acer' warranty? what does it cover and is it worth it? i didn't opt for comet's insurance plan (quite pricey!).

Good find, really considering it. However have stumbled across a Toshiba with very similar spec but £250 more expensive here. Have noticed that Toshiba one shows the 7600 graphics card at 128 mb dedicated while the Acer goes at 256 mb Dynamic. Does anybody know if they are slightly different graphics card, as someone has also noted earlier the Acer one is actually a 7600se while this review identifies that some gf7600 only give 64mb.

I'm sure Comet have incorrectly described the graphics as Dynamic...the 256 mb is external so is dedicated not shared memory.

Yes the Tosh has more or less the same specs albeit with Vista ready installed but at a premium price...that is why I posted this deal as it appears a bargain price for such a high spec.

It is dedicated 256MB for the GPU, as it does not come with turbocache...

I have played Supreme Commanders (@ laptops native resolution) and there is no slow down. So it is quite capable of playing recent games.

Just to confirm there us bluetooth and firewire on this laptop.

Maybe this is why they are so keen to offload this laptop?
