A Laptop with a good balance of components at a decent price. The RAM is high performance DDR3 1066MHz, A good processor as opposed to the pathetic Celeron processors often found at this price, and a decent graphics card.

Please avoid tedious comments about how you once bought a crap Acer, because many people are happy with their Acer, or how Windows 7 doesn't do it for you and how much better Windows 3.1.1 is.

Also remember that similar but lower specification laptops WITH THE SAME MODEL NUMBER may well be on sale elsewhere.

I am in the process of buying a laptop and wonder if this is too good to be true. I know little about them. I would like to know if it's worth buying for my son.

:?Well, I have looked it up at various sites and this does seem a great deal. I'm nearly there to buy although it is a bit more than I was going to pay for one. I was going for this:- Samsung R519 Laptop, Dual Core T4200 2.0GHz, 3GB RAM, 250GB HDD, 15.6 HD LCD, DVDRW, Webcam, Silver and Black, Windows 7 Home Premium. Best price £389 at http://www.ebuyer.com/product/176503 but now I am unsure :?

wireless N is the latest and fastest wireless technology, if you want to send data or stream movies/music it can send more data quicker to other wireless N enabled things.

This is a great spec laptop, perfect for your son Teltheboy, won't get outdated quickly, proper graphics card is a must have, everything runs quicker and smoother. Unlike other acers this doesn't have any silly gimmicky star trek style buttons or features that waste space and break, and also this has a number pad on the keyboard which is convenient for when they want to type in ur credit card details quickly without your permission!

it also has louder less tinny speakers on it instead of the usual hopeless laptop speakers.

I bought a solid spec similarly priced acer like this over 5 years ago and its still runs smoother than most £500 laptops of today, this one looks much improved and my friends have new acers and theyre great.

problems with them have been with upgrading, acer have silly hardware with outdated drivers, so its v difficult to upgrade to windows 7, as a result i'm still on xp. but this one shouldnt have that problem and comes with the latest OS anyway.

If your upper limit is around £400 have a look at this - not as well spec'd but good for the money.

Thanks for replying re my choice and thanks for the post spock. It has generated a good bit of interest.

the acer is far more up to date than both samsung and dell and far better spec, worth the extra in my opinion. the dell has integrated graphics, dedicated graphics card is really noticeably better even for browsing the internet, the flash animations etc will be smoother and more responsive. the acer really has the latest of all technologies, the processor, ram, graphics, wireless all pretty state of the art

How many hours battery life though?

Thanks Sassie. I have spoken to Acer and they cannot or would not tell me anything about the machines from Amazon. I was informed that until I bought the machine, I would have to look up the serial number and check if it's to be recalled. I would have expected them to tell me that they could recall the batch from the companies they supplied to. This puts me off a lot. hmmmm.

i had the Z version but had to return it due to the webcam not playing ball, the battery life is very good if you dim it slightly, i was having 4 to 5 hours out of it

they where knocking the Z version out for £400 with 500GB and 4GB ram, not sure on what other specs where

It's odd you say that as Flash (annoyingly for any Netbook users) has no hardware acceleration and is all done on the CPU and doesn't touch the graphics card :whistling:

same price at simplyacer with next day delivery http://www.simplyacer.com/Acer_Aspire_5738G_667581.html Amazon however are a much more reputable retailer.

Why is this a good deal? Is it because it has a decent graphics processor? If your're paying an extra 80-100 you might as well go out and get an x-box 360 instead. I have the same laptop, but the 5738z, which has 4gb RAM, 320gb hdd, and a blu-ray disc player for £419.99 three months ago from comet. The computer has died now, but all Acer's suck when it comes to reliability. They are a gamble, and I would never pay £500 for one of their computers.

Would that be a refurb by any chance?

I've always found X Box 360s very useful at meetings or to work when travelling. :whistling:

I ordered one for reserve and picked it up today, a really nice machine.

I used the code to get it down to £475, and I've received an email saying my cashback has been tracked, for over £16, making this less than £450!!

Heat and rep coming up

Warning people about a bad product seems a good idea to me ;-)

I like my Acer (actually it is only marginally slower than this deal and I bought it for the same amount 14 months ago!) but the 'Acer' customer services and warranty support is awful. You don't deal with Acer at all, you talk to an indian call centre which then talks to an out sourced repair centre.

Google "Acer infoteam" for various horror stories with people trying to get laptops repaired through them..

So nice laptop just don't break it ;-)

Yup, when I was looking to buy mine there were many similar laptops all with the same model number but with various different gfx options, CPUs and dvd/bluray/hd-dvd drives.

I'm not sure if this has DDR3 RAM? It doesn't mention it, except for the graphics memory which is different. I'm pretty sure most if not all Core 2 Duo's only take DDR2. Acer in the past have put 667mhz in 800FSB boards which is a bit annoying. I guess the Windows 7 is 32bit?

Ahh seems I may be wrong http://www.simplyacer.com/Acer_Aspire_5738G_667581.html

Can I just say I got this lappy about a week ago from comet, its brilliant, can take up to 8gb ram, and its DL DVD+- RW. I am very happy with it, battery life is typically just under 4 hours, and its actually cheaper at ebuyer online outright, but guess with comet code its best from there

To answer Zek, it's 64-bit Windows 7

Somewhat average deal from a below average manufacturer.
Spec is one thing but my experience of acers is not good.

I have had 2 Acers and they've been nothing but amazing, never hand a problem...but I guess its how you take care of them or maybe you've had some bad luck? or maybe I was lucky lol either way the spec speaks for itself and I've been impressed so far with it
#39
yeah i think for 500 u will get a better make and = spec for a better price in the next few weeks
