All the staff (20) at the school where my wife teaches were given an ACER laptop. Guess what happened to the majority of them?

Answer: See the previous posts!

I have had my Compaq laptop for almost ten years and it has never let me down. The only time I needed to repair it was when I dropped it and broke the screen, but even then there was nothing wrong with the actual computer. Hopefully my next laptop will be as good a build (I'm buying a new one in the New Year sales then passing my Compaq on to my wife :) )

They don't make them like they used to!

Thought Compaq were notorious for the power jack failing on them.

I have heard that too, but I reckon it is because some people over stretch the cord, which in turn buckles the connectors.

I suppose that all computers will have their supporters and gainsayers, so it is left up to the buyer to make an personal choice. Many just go for cheapness above quality though.

going back to the 2nd post; what fails so much on the Acers?

It's my opinion that there are both good and not-so-good laptops out there, from all manufacturers. Keep an eye out for online reviews, or visit a local store to check the goods before you buy elsewhere. The internet is chock full of reviews, video previews and message board opinions. Do your research and weigh up the value of an extended warranty - just as you would when you invest in a vehicle.

Argos sell a similar Acer i3 laptop but with 3GB of RAM for £399.99 with a 3-year guarantee (1.51% Topcashback). So, if you're concerned about reliability why not go for the Argos one?

Ignore these idiotic brand snobs, I've worked in PC repair for over 13 years, Acer is an average brand, easily on par with other mid range brands (hp, dell etc) but as with other brands, you get what you pay for.

I bought a Sony laptop 18 months ago, because of their "reputation for quality". I've regretted it since becasue Ive heard of all the PSU issues they have.

In this time Ive had to buy a new AC adaptor (one day it just randomly stopped passing current through). I keep it stationary so it is not from stretching it etc. The battery loses charge overnight when the computer is completely turned off. Again, not from overuse because I keep it stationary and plugged in.

I totally agree with you. These are the guys that are actually putting their money where their mouth is, so this is what I'd get once my "reputable" branded one fails.

Acer are best known for motherboard and power supply failures!! 75% of the failures I get through my business happen just after the warranty expires!!

Here is the link to the Argos one: www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/5083383.htm?tag=ar:cat:opp:offeracer It is rated 5/5 from 52 reviews on their website and comes with a 3-year guarantee, so for £399.99 I'd say that is an excellent low-risk deal.

Purchased one from my local Argos this morning, after much deliberation and it was the warranty that swung it for me. I have to say that I'm very impressed with the machine compared to my current HP. The processor is a Core i3-350M and has 3GB of RAM as opposed to the one specified above.
As well as the 3 years warranty cover, they included a years Norton internet security for free and I also cashed in one of those free Argos vouchers. :)
