4kg, bit on the heavy side...

It's 16' screen a bit small for 1920x1080 resolution?
#3
im sure its not 4fk. i got a 8930g about 2 weeks ago. the 18" model that they bought out the same time as the 16"
mine is 4.1kg.

acer site says the 6935g is 3.5 kg (7.28 lbs.)

1920x1080 is a good point, why would you not want it in a 16"?
its good for watching blurays in full HD as thats what most blu rays have a resolution at.
i got a 18" with 1920x1080 and i love it, also if you dont like the resolution, you can change it.

Acer = 849.99 ??? :?

Surely you can get a better branded laptop if your going to pay that price ! :whistling:

?
can you find a laptop with T9400, 9600m GT and 320gb+ 7200rpm, blu ray and full hd screen HDD for £850 or less?

also whats wrong with an acer?

I got one of these laptops last week and it is great value for money.

It does have a tv tuner built in

and... it even has DDR3 ram in it, even though it says DDR2 on acers site, this is a typo and the system actually comes with 4gb of DDR3

resolution wise I think it looks really nice and crisp having 1080P on a 16" screen.

you really cant go wrong with this laptop!

I know that you can change the resolution, but with this laptop you are pretty much paying that price because it has a good resolution which is nice for games and movies but my concern is if using 1920x1080 is too small for that screen size specially if you are using windows, web-browsing, etc.

I have at work a laptop that has a 15.4 screen and going for anything more that 1440 is just too small.

So you might want to bear this in mind. I would not want to pay this much for a laptop and then realised that you have to change the resolution to 1280x1024, etc in order to use windows. When you could spend a lot less and get a different laptop in the first place.

Or If you want a good gaming machine you probably would go for a desktop anyway which you can get a lot more for £800.

Wow... do you pay serious money for the privilege of Blu ray, and the 16" screen size I see as a positive disadvantage to portability :-(

Personally not getting the slightest urge towards wanting it, which is odd, I normally drool for new stuff! I keep[ getting the feeling I will probably have worn out a couple of other machines before I even think about needing BR & I suppose even if I did, it wouldn't likely be on a 16" screen on a laptop!

A very respectable spec for the money certainly but no bargain in my humble opinion. Added to which my experience of Acer has not been good, I usually avoid their products now.

Then it's a duplicate of a recent thread....

Cold from me. It's a mismatched spec that's not really good for anything. No good for games because the res is too great for the midrange graphics card to handle, no good for movies because the screen is too small, no good for mobile use because it's too heavy, and no good for longevity because it's Acer. Weak.

to use the tv tuner... plus it in to the laptop then open windows media centre and select "set up tv"

i dont think anyone else would be able to find a similar spec'd laptop for this price, after looking for a new laptop for 2 months i consider this a real bargain

I have one, your argument about screen res isisnt valid, it gives you options. Screen is great and can easy attach to bigger screen if wanted using hdmi.

how is it no good for games? just because acer put a good full HD screen in?
A lot of pc's come with full HD screens now, and they have gpu's like ATI 4870 and GTX 260 which cant handle games like crysis, cod4/5, left for dead, gta4 or any other game at 1920x1080.
so what most sensible people do is lower the resolution to something like 1024x768 or 1440x900.
they didnt add that screen for only games, it can be for full HD films as well, or other stuff.

its ok for movies considering most entertainment laptops out now are 16". eg: HP HDX16, Sony FW series, this acer, new Dell studio xps. and its larger then the mainstream 15".

3.5kg is slightly on the heavy side but you shouldnt be looking to move it everywhere as 16" is too big for that, and so is anything 13-14"+.

what do you mea by longativity. i get 2.5 hours out of my 8930g(larger version of this) on high performance mode while watching blu ray's. and 2.5 hours is respectable for any laptop. and this does around the same.
my sony FW does 2 hours 10min, the HP HDX16 does 2.5 hours, dell studio xps 16" says to do around 2 hours 15min. so it does fine compared to the competitors in its range. it does around the same as any 16" with the same specs.

I've just always thought Acer was a cheapo brand. For that price id rather buy a Sony. :-D But thats just my opinion !
#19
yeh, while acer laptops are made of mostly plastic and the 16" sony(FW series) is made of mostly aliminium, acer laptops still look ok and are very durable. also acer is a large company, has good support and there aptops dont break down.

while sony fw is aliminium and looks nicer, its got no where near the same spec for this price.

Fair enough, i've just always had Sony's, Toshiba's, Samsungs - Would never pay a lot for an Acer - Thats just my opinion :whistling:

I think a lot of the users of this site, me included would contradict that!

Size is no guarantee of good or bad service, it's just size!

Acers are very much a mixed bag, as is the service - personally had one good, one bad, and there are any number of other similar comments on here VERY regularly!

I know it's been a while since the last post but I thought that I would add something that may be of interest.

I had a Sony FW21 for approx 1 month until I saw the Acer 6935 and while the Sony was certainly a great machine it just didn't have anywhere near the same firepower as the acer. Slower processor, slower hard disk, slower RAM, rubbish ATI card, no built in tv tuner etc. etc.

I did a deal with a family member to buy the Acer and I swapped it for the Sony despite the fact that I paid more for the Sony!

Much better and much happier! Reliability? I had an Acer for 2 years, used every day and never had an issue! Do yourself a favour and don't be a brand sheep!

(Although one thing I will say is that the Sony has a better screen, keyboard and it looks amazing! Was just disappointed with the fact that I couldn't play games)
