That system is not compatable with the full version of Windows Vista and you will not be able to use Aero with it. Aero requires a dedicated graphics card and is not compatable with shared video ram.

Also the battery charge will only last about 90 minutes with this laptop.

Just so people know.

Well this laptop is way good enough for me, I was looking for one with a webcam and a 17inch screen so thanks bryan839, and I dont want the vista upgrade anyway. And how do you know that it will on last 90mins, I had a laptop last year (also an acer) and the estimated battery life is lower than what it actually lasts, it lasts ages!

It wasn't me. My post wasn't a criticism, I was just trying to make people aware of the limitations of the system, it is still a good price.

I don't know where you get that from. Even Intel's integrated 950 graphics solution works with Vista. The Geforce Go 6100 is definitely Vista&Aero-capable.

However, the Sempron processor in this notebok is lame for the price point.

According to Microsoft's own release notes for Vista, Aero is -not- compatable with systems with shared video memory. It requires dedicated graphics and vram.

Unless MS have changed things at the last minute, I would suggest the Nvidia link is wrong.

[EDIT]
It seems they have toned down the requirements somewhat but not a lot. Aero will now run with "some" shared graphics chipsets but it requires 128MB of System RAM to be shared with the device and the recommended system RAM for Vista in this situation is 1GB. That still leaves this system pretty much flat on it's back with Aero. I would be very suprised if Aero runs on this laptop.

I'd personally go with the Acer AS5102WLMI with a smaller screen i admit (15.4" W/screen) but a very good spec overall indeed & only £479.99 from Comet - 3.5% quidco discount too!!!

Spec:

AMD Turion 64x2 Dual Core cpu 1.6Ghz
120gb h/d
1gb ram
15.4" Screen
Shared graphics 128mb
Super Multiwrite dvdrw
ATI Radeon Xpress 1100
802.11b/g Wireless
Windows XP Media Center (wonder if there's a free upgrade to Windows Vista premium?)

Most other laptop companies (inc laptops direct) are still selling this in excess of £575! So a bargain!

On a personal note, I would advise no-one to upgrade to Vista for any purpose. It won't make you more productive, it won't give you more exciting experiences and it won't be secure. It will be full of security holes, it will lead to millions of people becoming the victims of identify theft and it will remove pretty much all your consumer rights with regards to digital media.

Vista was released for one reason, "premium" content protection. It is absolutely riddled with DRM.

But like I said, that just my personal advice, I daresay no-one will listen to it and that almost no-one even understands what DRM is or what I am talking about, so I will leave it at that.

Depends on what you're looking for in a laptop but I'd rather not have a Sempron and integrated graphics.

What's the big deal about Aero?
#17
Just to let people know I seen this laptop in my local Tesco Extra store on offer for £439.99!! Thats a good price for a entry level laptop these days, especially one with a 17inch screen.

Hope this helps

I know what you are talking about, and I agree.
In fact I am in a hurry to buy a laptop soon because Im guessing that in a few months time most will be sold with Vista pre-installed and I don't want it.
