Granted, it's cheap and it has a 17" screen but 1 GB of RAM, 80GB HDD and a useless battery (I own an Acer) is hardly worth getting excited about.

If you're buying a 17" laptop, you probably want to use it as a desktop replacement.

This machine certainly doesn't come anywhere near the kind of specs you should be looking for in a desktop replacement.

Also bear in mind that although some people talk about how good their individual machine is, Acer have got an awful reputation.

EDIT: I would also be astonished if you got anywhere near 2.5 hours battery life with the cell they have here: the 17" screen (unless you turn the brightness right down) will probably gobble the charge in about 80-90 minutes.

This only has 1GB of RAM.

I still haven't seen anyone post a better at £300 with a comparable 17" screen, which makes this a good deal in my book. Very cheap to upgrade the RAM of course. Sure, there are better value 15" laptops but some people want a big screen on a budget and this fits the bill. The actual battery life is around 1hr 30 - I don't think the battery itself is the problem - obviously powering a big bright screen is going to eat into its life when unplugged.

I think this is a good deal bearing in mind the price. As a cheap replacement for a desktop its fine.

If you wanted a better laptop with more features and better battery life then you would spend more surely!!

No, This I think is good value.

My desktop display is only 15 inches and even when I'm doing photoshop work I don't see why I would need a bigger screen. Given the extra weight and ****** battery life you get with a 17 inch laptop I'd suggest people look for a bargain 15 inch instead.

I bought an Acer 5720 on offer recently at £279.99 despite some negative comments about ACER it has been faultless. To be fair most of the time i use it is at home plugged in so havent had to worry about battery problems if they exist.

I havent seen any other new laptops sub £300 with a 17" screen, dual core processor and Vista home premium, so voted HOT

Sister in law has one of these from when they were on offer at Tesco. It has caused me nothing but agro. The drivers are Acer specials and the damn thing keeps freezing / crashing even after a re-build. It may be cheap, but its awful!
