good size screen, nice resolution and very good graphics card - very good package. VOTED HOT!!
#2
Any reason why the merchant is acer and not amazon... ? Updating now :)
#3
Very nice specs and price. Voted HOT!
#4
Its such a great price for this specification and anyone thinking of spending around 300-400 i think they should go for it.I have acer laptop which works superb
#5
Its exactly the same laptop with the same specification
#6
seems like a really good deal to me! especially with the 17" screen, which i would need for programming! hmm, to buy or not to buy...

good 17" screen, dual core processor, decent HD capacity, graphics better than most at this price i would imagine... only down point is only 1gig RAM, but that's realy cheap AND upgradable (up to 4gig). oh, and a 6 cell battery. i think this is a winner.

if only i wasnt poor...
#7
Does any1 know the speed of the processor?
#8
actually the graphics is right at the bottom, however, it is actually a good laptop, similar to the one on tesco direct at the same price

It's in the specs - Processor Speed (GHz): 1.8 GHz

CPU is 49th in this benchmark list

gaxter is right about the graphics. It's integrated stuff - see NVIDIA GeForce Go 6100/6150

Wow, that's quite a dilemma, my friend!
Well, these notebooks don't compare actually... (so to say). Let me briefly tell what I think of each of 'em (IMHO):

Advent @ 399.99
- Pros: 17" screen
- Cons: Brand; Processor (Pentium Dual Cores are not as energy efficient as Core Duos and they are not as fast at the same clock speed, that's because they have slower FSB and less cache memory... anyone more tech-savvy can give you more details on that); and oh, yes... have I mentioned the Brand?

1st HP @ 459.99 (after rebate)
- Pros: Processor, HD, Brand, Bluetooth
- Cons: Smaller screen (15.4") (assuming you'd rather have a larger screen, which is not true for everyone...)

2nd HP @ 429.45 (after rebate)
- Pros: more RAM, Brand, Bluetooth, 64-bit dual-core processor
- Cons: Smaller screen; Processor less powerful than in the 1st HP (not sure, but if not mistaken, a Turion X2 TL-60 matches the performance of a Core Duo T2400; it is also widely believed that Turions are energy hungrier)

Acer @ 399.99
- Pros: 17" screen, integrated webcam
- Cons: 2nd worst proc. of the pack, better than the Pentium Duo and slightly slower than the 2nd HP with the Turion TL-60

So...
- the Advent or the Acer? If you are starving for a 17", I think you would be better off with the Acer one.
- my pick of 'em all? The 2nd HP @ 429.45. HP is a brand most people trust and I am a Turion enthusiast (where else could you get an 'overclockable' 64-bit processor?) and you end up paying 30 GBP more (in relation to the Acer) for double the memory, 50% more HD and bluetooth ...

However, being on a tight budget, were I on your shoes, I would for this one:

It's a HP 530 notebook: 15.4", Core Duo T2400, 1G, 120G for 370 GBP.

Applying the code: HPSPLDIS, you can bring it down to a grand total of 334 GBP (including delivery). Quite a bargain, I would say! You'll end up paying 65 pounds less compared to your cheapest choices (Acer and Advent), but you'll get a better proc., the same RAM and same HD. Well, yes it's true you won't have an integrated webcam and a 17" screen (or a Vista Premium for that matter).

Hope I was of some help...

How can this be upgraded to 4 gb for a cheaper price.1 gb ram on the play.com is13.99 does it work for every laptop or do it have to be specific?

It's not worth upgrading to 4Gb for a number of reasons - upgrading to 1.5 to 2Gb is recommended.

Play's £13.99 1Gb laptop RAM will work with this, & most newer DDR2 laptops. Yes, they have to be specific. To upgrade this Acer to 2Gb, one will have to buy 2x 1Gb modules & replace the present 2x 512Mb modules (I can't see this laptop having 4 RAM slots, but you never know!)

Having had a look at the specs at HP, the Play modules will be fine.....

Memory type: DDR II, 667 MHz, 512 or 1024 or 2048 MB
Memory slots: 2 SODIMM slots supporting dual channel memory
Memory upgrade: Upgradeable to 4096 MB maximum

You could probably sell the 512Mb module(s) on eBay to recoup some of the money.

Sorry, you're right it has a 1x 1Gb module (from here), so you'll need another 1x 1Gb. HP Guide to selecting & installing RAM here.
