Over £1500 for anything made by acer is plain crazy.

Not even up to date.

Anything over £250 for an Acer is a laugh.....wait for the refurbs :)

Good spec for the price, even if it isn't the most recent processor.
Can't see why this is being voted cold, but probably brand snobberer, the same as if a Skoda deal was on here.
Acer are the worlds 2nd biggest laptop manufacturer and are only beaten in sales by HP!

I use a Gateway (owned by Acer) at the moment and I'm thinking of replacing it with an Acer Timeline - I'm happy to spend £3-400 on an Acer. But... ...if I was gonna spend £1500 on a laptop I'd want it to be well built and the manufacturer to have decent customer service - that doesn't sound like Acer to me.

@ GW19 - Doesn't matter how big they are. I'm just buying one laptop, not the company.

cheaper than a mac book to some degree

No-one denies skodas are badly built cars - but most people including myself will vouch for acers crap build quality. Just because they sell more crap laptops does not make them better. By that logic fords are better than lambos becuase ford sells more cars.

I think build quality on Acer laptops is variable. My 3810tzg is about as robust as a paper air plane. I've seen other models that seem very well made though. Acer's biggest selling point to me price, and this deal isnt exactly addressing the budget end of the market.

nice laptop! my acer 15" top of the line (at the time) is great. this looks awesome but my laptop is more than enough for now.
#17
try msi instead there are some decent deals around

Complete nonsense! mine 3810tg is a great build, sturdy and solid very nice little laptop.

um, sure, including the worlds most flexible, unprotected screen. No wonder mine has already been off to Acer for repair twice (in the first three months). My old Thinkpad was as good as the day I bought it after 5 years!

Now I'm confused. I've ordered a 4810tzg and was hoping it would be a badly built and unreliable laptop with poor customer service to give me a hobby for the next 3 years. If it's a sturdy, solid and nice laptop I'm not convinced I want it. Please debate and reach a conclusion; do I have to buy something cheaper to get a rotten, flimsy piece of junk?

no it doesn't have to be cheaper it has to be made of organic matter like an apple we all now that they'll root after some time :)

I have this laptop... Screen is the best I have ever seen on a laptop... It has a blu-ray writer (blu rays will have replaced dvds within two years (I would suggest by the end of 2011!?) It is brilliant for video editing and sound editing... I bought it for £1300 from pc world refurb then bought a 3 year accidental warranty direct from acer for £86!! It is very stable and fast... no major crashes... only gripe is no pci card slot. 2 hard drives offer 1.2tb of storage although I am going to replace one with an ssd. battery is a very competive 3-4 hours...

The refurbished one from pc world has only 4 GB of Ram. To upgrade it to the 16GB would cost about another £200ish (preowned)

Wow.. I've had 3 HP laptops... 2 I've had issues with the charger and I know 2 people who have also had issues with theirs lol.. would not have thought they sold most

...Unless they include the repalcement units in their total shipping counts.... in which case they ship about three-times as many as they sell....

it does look nice, but i have been put of acer by their terrible aftersales service. had a nice timeline 1810 which failed after 11months. it took 4 returns (with useless DHL) before they eventually replaced it. each time they returned it, they had created more faults. will never buy acer again just for this reason.
#28
Must be cold as all the cold voters can get similar spec at a cheaper price??

Nicely put!

Ok, maybe I was a little harsh on my little Acer. Its a great piece of kit. Its not badly built, but the screen is a real weak spot. There's a lot of flex in it, and as happened on mine, this can cause the LED backlight to mess up. This results in a dark screen or dark areas of the screen. Its a know issue with this model - and they fix it fairly quickly (took about two weeks to get mine back).

On the plus side, the 3810 (and therefore I guess the 4810) is a great laptop if you like modding and tinkering. There is a space for a second (albeit very small) SSD drive. There is a SIM slot which will give 3G support if you add the right module internally (its a few quid on ebay apparently) - the point is the header is there on the motherboard. Same with bluetooth I believe.

There are custom firmwares available that let change various things, and I currently have my CPU overclocked with no impact on reliability or battery life.

Nice Latop, The price is high, but the spec is as well. The 16GB of Ram is noteworthy, and would probably equate to a machine that qould offer a long life span over the heavy investment. I like others tend to have a questioning attitude towards Acer and their support, but I think they are not as bad as they used to be, and the more expensive units tend to be better

You said "No-one denies skodas are badly built cars" if no-one denies it then everyone agrees? I suspect you meant to say "no-one denies Skodas are well built cars" or "no-one believes skodas are badly built cars". Says a lot about Skoda phenomenal change in quality (and image) under VW that I just assumed you meant to say they were well-built but had mis-typed. Wonder if they could do the same for Acer?

Perhaps - but when you pay £1500 you expect the quality to be good! Even if the build quality is good their customer service will be ****.

Anyway, if you want to pay £1500 for a laptop better to go for a brand thats synonymous with good quality like Dell, HP, Lenono (except dells budget range which is crap).

Or pay £500 for a laptop now, then £500 in a years time then £500 in 2 years time, you can get i7 Laptops for around 6/700 anyway.

And if you really need 16GB of ram (for VM's desktop editing etc), better to get a desktop, you'll get your work done faster.
