I know this was available for £150 a couple of months ago at Asda, but that was then, this is a great price for instore collection and far cheaper than at DSG Retail Group and not a refurbished offering like some retailers are offering, a great machine for installing MAC OS X on.

white one is still available

Big chance it will come around at £150 again. Comet sucks anyway and the white aspire looks cheap and nasty in my opinion.

Anything positive you have to say about it? Lol.

Find a better price currently. Brand new, warranty is with Acer....no doubt you will say they suck too, the colour is a matter of opinion I prefer the blue I have to say.

Not knocking the price at all! People can always say it will be cheaper. Wait for the next one and stuff like that. Agree about colour being a matter of taste too. Not knocking the deal at all. Just sayin it will probably come around again at £150. Right now it's a good deal. But maybe worth it only if you REALLY need one now.

Don't be so quick to jump to conclusions. I've no opions about the acer brand however, my personal experience of dealing with comet left me a bitter and twisted evil doer who votes everything cold and make wild claims about how they are in it for the money, of all things!

By the way what album cover is that on your avatar?

Sorry, I just thought you had some inside info on the fact it was coming down again to £150..I know Comet are known for particularly being bad with returns after buying something.....but I bought a blue one the other day after having a less than satisfactory refurb "as new" from Dixons delivered for £165 with a crack in the casing and clearly displaying signs of it being cracked open for whatever repair...luck of the draw I guess but it soon went back.

Album cover on my avatar is by the much underrated (and a band that have influenced the Johnny Greenwoods guitar sounds of Radiohead, Interpol and The Editors) 80-90s band Kitchens Of Distinction, album is The Death Of Cool.

If you add the blue version to your basket, it's actually showing as £169.99. Dunno if it will add VAT or something on at the final order stage, as I've not tried it that far.

Infact the blue version is now showing as £169.99 on the page, apparently they've just dropped the price within the last 5 minutes O_O.

Well spotted, also works with the white one!...damn only bought this a few days ago for £199, wonder if Comet do any price promise within a set time period?

Will amend the title, currently can be ordered for £169.99 goes through to checkout fine.

I'm incredibly tempted to get one at this price, since my desktop died the other day.

What's your opinion on your newly purchased one?

Absolutely delighted with it mate, can get 3 hours battery life out of it on medium brightness on its 3 cell battery, can add a 6 cell or a really bulky 9 cell battery for £40 on Ebay and get 7-8 hours from it.

If you are tech savvy and got an external USB DVD drive its easy to install XP, Vista or Windows 7 on it, and even have it dual booting with Mac OS X (once you swap out the mini pci-e card with a compatible Broadcom card like I have done, everything works apart from sleep mode and the internal SD card reader in Mac OS which is very impressive)

Screen on these is a delight, really good and in reviews fairs better screen wise than the MSI Wind, keyboard is great, far better and bigger than the Asus EEC...about the only let down is the niggly mouse buttons being either side of the trackpad, not only are they awkward, but very brittle clicky, however if you are going to use anything at all, its wise to use a mini laptop mouse anyway...all in all one of the best netbooks out there, especially at this price.

Only other downside, unlike some netbooks this is only upgradeable to 1.5GB (512mb soldered) 1GB allowed in its DDR 2 slot. However 1GB is enough for XP and Mac OS.

However I wouldn#t really consider this a desktop replacement, its a ultra portable pc, it hasn't the power of a desktop, isn't for gaming, but for internet browsing, office work, old skool gaming, playing divx, operating system playing around and general tinkering its fantastic

Thoght I was getting good deal from asda at £150 bought 3 machines and guess what ALL 3 had to be returned within 4 weeks one hard drive failed from new no boot, one siezed on me after 3 weeks and one faulty screen straight out of box. Was on first name terms with manager got refunds no probs but suggests bad build quality on this model ? Shame cause they look nice !
#14
How's that for a price drop.

Kitchen's of Distinction . Cool. Brings back memories of days of gone by that went by quick as rainbows
#15
Well worth paying the extra £20 over the old ASDA deal for the extra RAM, its a pain to upgrade these and 1GB is perfect for Windows 7 or XP.
#16
bargain, cancelled at play and ordered at Comet!
#17
Bloody good job my dell is getting delivered today, otherwise I would have canceled and gone for this
Why does the deal read £169.99 in title bit says £199.99 under picture?
#18
Great piece of kit, I got one from Amazon for a similar price a while back before they went up everywhere, so definitely voting hot on this one.
The Aspire can handle 720p HD MKV's, so can be quite useful as a portable media player, or using the VGA out, as a media player on for example a bedroom TV.

If anyone wants the famous Asda £150 thread where almost every question about this product was answered, it's here

blue color out of stock ...

also can't find anywhere in london..so i have to buy the white :(
#21
HOT. I bought one of these 2 weeks ago at Comet for £199.99. Even then it was by far the cheapest around.

Battery life on these is not good (2 hours) compared to the 6 hours of the replacement 160GB model, so beware).

FANTASTIC MACHINE !!

I bought one of these (my OH did too), when they were on offer at ASDA for the 160GB version for £150 each. OH - is running Linux (which comes as standard), and I upgraded the my memory to 1.5GB, and am running XP Pro in mine. Upgrading the memory is not for the faint-hearted, you'll need to strip the machine down totally.

As others have said, it's a great piece of kit - small, light, portable / very usable, speed (processor / memory) is great for running numerous apps (MS office suite, image editing etc), only issue I would comment on are the mouse buttons being in a strange place at the sides of the mouse pad.

Unless i'm mistaken these ones have never been £150 as that was the 512mb version. Although obviously they will come down some more at some point ;-)

Nice price if this £169 thing is right

Not a bad deal...

I got 2 from asda back along with 160gb Hard drives...

The memory is easy to do, follow the instructions on you tube and take it easy getting the keyboard out and the mobo. oh and take your time...

To be honest I have been using this for months, my desktop has only been powered on when i need a file from it, they are great for mobile internet (hsdpa) and downloading stuff (less power consumption then you normal desktop etc).

When surfing press f11 in internet explorer to get full screen and allows you to surf properly.

I have fitted an internal usb to hide a bluetooth dongle simple soldering a usb header onto the mobo and hiding it in the space for the hsdpa card underneath. also upgraded the os to windows 7 and the memory in both to 1.5gb (the max it can handle)

If your laptop will not boot and all you get is a black screen and a power led then look at the instruction for emergency bios flash, for some reason when i put one of mine to sleep it would not wake up, I used a guide online to reflash the bios an its been fine ever since.

This is why alot of people were returning them as they seem to have died.

check out http://www.aspireoneuser.com/forum

also look into the fan control software...

http://nodadev.wordpress.com/pc-projects/a1ctl/

There a great following on the forum above and it will help you out no end if you get into trouble.

I ended uptaking mine back because of the bios problem above.

It was a very good machine but that bios problem pushed me towards the nc10, which is fab.

Prior to this win7 was working great on the aa1 with the 1gb of ram.

Can XP be installed from a usb powered dvd rom drive simply by inserting an original Windows XP cd (then installing the drivers for this machine) ?

yes you can, I got a cheap used xbox 360 hd-dvd drive from blockbuster for £7! Also you can install windows xp or win 7 from usb memory stick (see links above).

These machines are great, I'm writing this now with mine that I got from Asda a few months back running xp pro with 1.5gb ram. It has been faultless and at home is connected to external 19" monitor and running at least 12 hours a day. It is faster than my 3ghz Athlon desktop with 1gb memory!

Its not a beware issue.....the "replacement" just has a 6 cell battery (a 6 or 9 cell battery can be purchased, unlike the Toshiba Netbook whereby replacements are not available there are plenty of 6 or 9 cell batteries on Ebay)

As for the battery life, I can get over 3 hours out of mine, after installing a1ctl which when running battery power you can configure to dropping the cpu speed to 800mhz, and keeps the fan off until a suitable temperature is necessary for it to kick in.

hi guys.

is it possible to install windows xp on one of these? if yes, would it be through a portable cd drive?

Yes, from an external drive or usb stick. See the asda thread quoted earlier for instructions.

This has already been answered, yes, format the drive and install using either a windows install on a usb pen or via a external usb cd/dvd drive.

PC World seem to have a refurb'd one for £169 delivered if anyone can't get this. There's a 5% discount code kicking about plus 4% quidco.
#36
I bought one a month a go for £150, have no complaints at all. I couldn't cope with Linux as it didn't do enough.

I installed XP Pro from a bootbale usb stick, took less than half an hour to put on.

Wouldn't recommened this as a replacement for a desktop, unless you are going to plug in a monitor and full size keyboard.
#37
I didn't format the drive, as I think the Linux install isn't on the hard drive, it's on an internal chip.
#38
How can we possibly install Windows XP on it? any guidlines around on the web?

I bought one from Dixons last week, same deal...wouldn't recommend, its a lottery...one I had posted to me had clearly been repaired, a crack above the vga socket, prising marks around where they had removed the top panel.....went back for refund, and hence why I bought this one (just hope I can get a partial refund in store now of £30 now the price has gone down)

No its not, its installed on the 120GB hard disk and can be wiped by formatting the drive.
