These are in stock again at Dabs a great price for this netbook. They have white ones for £113.72 and blue for £119.97.

Also note that there are plenty of used blue ones for ~£100. I managed to snap one up with no manuals or disks for £86! Can it get cheaper than that!?

White: http://www.dabs.com/products/acer-refurb-aspire-one-a110-aw-atom-512-8gb-ssd-linux-white-5DJR.html

Blue: http://www.dabs.com/products/acer-refurb-aspire-0ne-a110-ab-atom-n270-512gb-8gb-ssd-linux-8-9--blue-5HW5.html

They also have good refurb prices on other Aspire One models.

Also note their free delivery promotion as well as FREE Office & Anti Virus Software With Every Laptop Or Netbook Purchased (not that that will be very useful...).

better ssd or sata?
#3
30 day warranty tho

Nice find will visit now and add H & R if still in stock:thumbsup:

I'd buy [5J5FWS] and upgrade the OS and / or RAM myself but it's not available at the moment.
#6
Not to sure of spec, and its an old model, but the ex catalogue shop in washington Galleries had a few of the asus Eeepc 900 notebooks for £125 brand new, still boxed.
#7
30 day warranty is a real turnoff for me

Spend the extra and buy 120GB hard drive version, you will be much happier. With 1GB RAM also fitted you can install windows XP or 7 with no problem if you wish.
Although the 8GB SSD (very slow performance) can be replaced (with some difficulty), by the time you purchase a new (small) hard drive separately and installed extra RAM you are up to the price of hard drive model anyway.
I have 2 of these and they are nice machines, but don't buy the bottom model unless you only want very basic performance/use.

Where did you get second hand ones for £90?

In respons to the above poster - I agree, but its a significant amount extra - its not like its a nominal figure. You are talking an extra £30 which is an extra 25-30% on top. For some, this will be the better buy - for others, the one you recommend will be. Personal choice.

Agree, especially for those that are stuck on a tight budget.

Cheers, Scotty Boy!

Yes the 8gb version is slow with linux. Put xp on mine so to counteract the slowness I run portable apps off an SD card which covers 95% of my use.
#12
Almost forgot there is also cashback via Quidco as well for them (assuming that it tracks successfully) - I would assume it's going to go through at 2%, which would be roughly £2.27p.

No runs even slower with xp. You can use it ok with linux but when I put a nlited xp on it it wasn't great so now run portable apps off an sd card so xp has sole use of the ssd. Hope that clears that up.

Not really, I don't understand how Linux is slower than XP on the same hardware.

I use http://www.browserlinux.com/ on my acer, its a puppy linux distro with firefox 3.52 very small 70mb download, very quick runs of a usb card or onboard sd card.

Kuki linux based on xbunto also works very well, i found xbunto or ubunto netbook version too slow on my acer on the internal sd drive.

Worth getting for the FREE Office & Anti-Virus software alone... :whistling:

be aware of the dead pixel clause on the web site

these are refurbs so i suspect many have dead pixels on the screen

Unbeknownst to most companies, EU law requires goods sold to have a minimum of a 2 year warranty. That applies here but there is also a similar thing in UK law which says 6 years.

That sounds useful to quote at the trading standards to get some clout, do you have reference to the actual laws?

Love the fact they are trying to get people to buy a package of windows apps (such as Norton) with a Linux Netbook.

This is about the cheapest netbook around, certainly the cheapest Atom based system. The SSD is slow and 512MB is not much. It will run Linux or XP though, even if it is a little slow.
#28
I'm running ubuntu 9.04 (linux) on one of these now, though I do have 1gb RAM and 16gb SSD...so much better than XP, and everything works now, including the 3G! Saying that, I didn't look if this deal has built in 3G, ah well - make your own minds up what you need. Also, my SSD is ideal for in the car over the bumps :-D

Sale Of Goods Act, 1974. Although its not quite as simplistic as stated above - it isnt an automatic 6 years, it is a "reasonable period of time" - which on many NEW electronic products has been decided it is 6 years.

On a second hand or refurb, you will fairly easily argue at least 1 year.
#30
Looking to order one of these for a colleague as I'm back in the UK next weekend - so much for the "free delivery" - talk about bait & switch tactics :x

Or... am I missing something?

Wouldn't touch an Acer at any price with what I have heard from disgruntled owners, and these are particularly poor specs for the price. Have a look at the refurbs on Bigpockets, no competition, better specs better brands and a good firm to deal with.

Refurbished/Secondhand.
These are modern computers why so many returned?
If they were crap in the first place they are not going to improve in quality by being refurbished

The fact they are refurbished means any tecnical issues that would be reason for returning have been fixed.

Also, lots of ignorant computer illiterate people don't seem to understand that these are only meant for basic web surfing and undemanding applications and probably try to run games on them

There's also the fact that the bundled Linpus Lite Linux Distribution is not that great either I'm afraid based upon previous deals for the Acer Aspire One Netbook (i.e. Asda & Tesco).

Cheers, Scotty Boy!

Strange that Acer's technical issues are so common.
You think 'ignorant computer illiterate people don't seem to understand' is a very good reason for returning them.I don,t know anyone that fits your description-I only know ordinary people that have bought these and have ended up with crap

Refurbs are not always defective units that have been tested due to harwaare failures. Quite often they are new old stock that's being cleared out.

I've bought loads of "refurb" electronic gear in the US and all have been "as new" when opened up.

Or, in many of these "secondhand cases" much more likely, simply customer returns within moneyback guarantee/distance selling regs, as they dont like them.

If I can save £70 on a product coz someone has bought it, opened it, and returned it - I think I will thanks!

Linux is slower than XP though, isn't it? Admittedly, I've only ever seen three benchmarks that compared Linux to XP, but of those three benchmarks, it turned out that Windows could run BOINC faster, run Firefox faster, and that IIS could serve pages quicker than Apache under Linux could. Is there any actual evidence that Linux is faster than Windows, or are you just parroting?
#39
For sure on a Solid State Drive; XP runs extremely slow relative to ubuntu...both installed on SSD formatted with FAT32. Firefox XP with SSD is a waste of effort! Fine in linux....and I've used Windows daily since Win95.

I have five Acer AOs. They were all bought with Linux which is what is particularly good because I had spare XP licences and saved myself £50 per machine.

These machines will undoubtedly have been returned because the owner will have wanted to do something more than Linux could immediately offer and thereafter did not want to spend his life wrting the driver for a printer.

Returned one machine to Acer on the Tuesday and it was back by the Friday so no complaints about warranty.

Cracking machines but far more practical for most users with hard drive and XP. Some have learnt the hard way.
