Acer Aspire One A150L 1.6GHz / 1GB / 120GB / Linux / BLUE £159.99 DELIVERED Play.com

Tony HarrisonTony Harrison

I'm currently looking to buy one of these and this is the cheapest I've found so far in blue. I know there have been deals in the past for less but this seems like the best price at the moment for the 1GB/120GB model delivered. Also this is brand new and not a refurb or grade A stock + it's from a reputable source. Post if you know where to get it cheaper because you'll save me some much needed pennies :-).

linux is what it comes with which to me was totally rubbish. but using a usb stick (i think it has to be atleast 2gb) and the correct software and programs you can get windows running. Here is the link i used to do mine. http://www.eeeguides.com/2007/11/installing-windows-xp-from-usb-thumb.html

I'm not so sure that play.com are a "reputable source". They're Jersey based and not covered by UK Distance Selling regulations or Sale of Goods Act etc.

You have no legal comeback in the event of something going wrong and are stuck with Acer's fairly poor warranty. If you're prepared to forgo this legal protection to save a (very) few pounds then fine. I'd rather take my chance on a refurb from P*ssyWorld at the same price.

+1 from me. Had a lightsaber go faulty after two months and they weren't interested, they just told me to go to the manufacturer (based in the US). When I got on my high horse about sale of goods act is when they politely pointed out to me that being based in Jersey it doesnt cover them (red face). To be fair, when they couldn't find the manufacturer's details they did offer to refund me but were clear that they would not have offered this if those details were available to them.

As a couple of posters have pointed out this does leave you with Acer's warranty service, which from my (anecdotal) experience is apalling.

I love my Aspire One but I'm holding out for a company based in the UK who doesn't have a 'refer faulty products to the manufacturer' in their T&Cs. Good price though, have some h&r.

I bought one few months back from Tesco £130. The best deal on these so far I have seen.

Came with Linux, used it for few weeks, liked it very much. Then changed my mind for Windows 7. Bought a IDE to USB converter cabel for tenner on ebay. Used my internal DVD drive in my desktop to connect with this netbook.

Wow, I didn't have to go through any kind of complicated software installation. Pop-in the Windows 7 DVD and installed windows 7 in half an hour time. It all preconfigured averything. Webcam, mic, everything.

I used use a 12" Dell m700 for last 3-4 years and I kinda like smaller laptops. I love this one now.

PM me, if you need more info on the DVD drive cable. It works like a charm, if you dont want to go through the painfull usb stick installation process.

Sounds to me like they were being very helpful! Regardless of the law there are many UK based companies that aren't interested after 2 months.

I have always found Play's service to be superb.

Presumably you could use an external USB DVD drive directly into the netbook? Where do you get Windows 7 on DVD? Does it still run a decent speed?

I'm not denying they were helpful, I have used Play for years and will continue to do so. The point is that if your lappy fails after 28 days, they will more than likely refer you to the manufacturer whose service is quite often shocking. As they are not based in the UK you have no protection from this under the SOG Act. Buy it from a UK company and you have legal backing to insist that the retailer sorts it out - whether they are interested or not.

The difference is that with a UK company you can use the law to force them to act - with Play you can't. Play's service is superb - until things go wrong after 28 days, when, believe me, they will very rarely help. Simply because they don't need to under Jersey law.

For around this price you can get (refurbished) Dell Mini 9 with XP from Dell Outlet which might be a better purchase

I'd be more upset that Acer's customer service was awful, if it is that bad maybe you should rethink about buying an Acer not just buying from Play..

Funny you should say that, 2 months ago I bought a refurb Aspire One from DSG (yes the retail group that includes Currys, Dixons and PC World) and with discount coupons it worked out at the time at £165.95, had it delivered.....noticed straight away that there were various scratches over the unit...and then a crack above the VGA socket.

These refurbs are not retail boxed, do not have the original booklets or manuals or the leatherette wallet to hold the Apire One in.....subsequently a unit described as refurbished as new was a lie and it went back for a refund.

I then purchased the same from Comet brand new boxed for £199.99 and posted it on here, subsequently two days after purchase it went down to £159.99 and was a killer hot deal on here, I got a partial refund and ended up with it for £159.99 myself.

No matter what you think of Jersey based transactions, you are covered by Acers warranty (personally after having a monitor repaired by Acer) I have not had problems with Acer. However I would sooner buy a brand new retail boxed unit than take the gamble of buying from those DSG retail muppets and be covered by their own warranty, and take the gamble of a refurb which doesn't come with the literature and can come with scratches or worse and covered by just a "Tech Guys" warranty.

I'm considering something like this to replace my daughter's school laptop (she must have been using it as a frisbee), but I've only understood 3 or 4 words of this thread. What's a Linux?

Linux is an operating system, one thats free "open sourced" unlike Microsofts operating systems which "legally" you have to pay for. Basically if you bought this, you can use Linux as an alternative to WIndows XP, Vista etc for web browsing, it has it own Open Source Office that is similar in functionailty to Microsoft office and the files are interchangeable. Because Linux is free to distribute being "open sourced" companies like Acer issue netbooks with "Linux" or "XP" and you find obviously as no license is payable unlike with Microsoft operating systems netbooks supplied with "Linux" work out cheaper.

You can of course with various tutorials remove Linux and install XP or whatever else (Vista or the new Beta version of Wondows 7) instead

Hi, if you do this and make a complete hash of it - does the Aspire come with a recovery CD to put it back to how it was ?

They did have a recovery image available for download, but I'm not sure if they still host it. It is available as a torrent download if you do a little searching. It's a free OS, so downloading it is totally legal.

The Linux version that comes with it (Linpus-Lite) is rather restricted it what it can do outside of the basic internet and office functions.

There are also lot's of other Linux distro's that have been taylored for the netbooks, that open it up so much more.

I'm typing this on the same model in this thread, that I have installed Windows 7 on, very fast booting and recognised almost all the devices straight off the DVD. Looks like they have really made an effort to recapture the netbook market.

This is basically the dictionary definition of a netbook.

It's exactly what you need if these are the functions you are looking for and does it all out of the box.
