#3
Comet 8% Quidco????

Don't think so.
#4
I think i'm gonna wait for the 1gb ram version to drop to this price...hopefully by the time i've saved the cash it'll be this price for the 1gb version :D
#5
Do you know if these SD slots are capable of reading SDHC cards? (eg 8gb ones)
#6
Seems good deal - are Acer going to update the Aspire Once soon hence the price drops?
#7
Comet...NO

I bought an oven off them 5 weeks ago, its stopped working on Mondayand the earliest they can send someone out is NEXT FRIDAY!!!

presumably if they cant fix it i'll have to wait another week for a new one.

Rubbish customer service, rubbish rubbish rubbish.
#8
Seems to be just Comet-Accessories for the quidco, which is a different part of the business, so nothing else on this front unfortunately. Great price for a very good gadget though.

Yes - they do take the SDHC cards

Comet are a terrible company - yes.

Its what you got to weigh up when buying something - paying extra for better service.

I want a 16GB SSD of one of these - then I'm gonna put an offline version of wikipedia and travelwiki on it (about 9GB in total). Then I'm gonna get a big red sticker saying DON'T PANIC on the front of it and go traveling.

do john lewis have this...price match & good customer service?

agree 100% comet is terrible!

smaller goods you shouldnt have a problem with provided something goes wrong in the first 30 days.

over on the aspireone forums, the ssd performance is meant to be very poor. poorer than the standard hdds

The SSD performance varies depending on the drive fitted - you could have one of 2 Intel variants (one slow, one faster) or a Samsung which is about the same speed as the faster Intel. I've got the faster Intel in mine which does approx 10 Mb/sec write and 38 Mb/sec read - fast enough to run XP, though obviously not as fast as an HDD. On the other hand its silent, lighter and uses less power - so horses for courses really. I've certainly no regrets in choosing the SSD over the HDD.

Here are some figures for you SSD V 8GB Class 6 SDHC.

http://i242.photobucket.com/albums/ff26/GAVINLEWISHUKD/SDHC.jpg

The main difference is the SSD is faster on small files for the OS.
#17
I got one of these and the SSD performance is awful,
#18
If you have a vrigin credit card you can get 10% off if you buy use it to buy comet vouchers!!!!!!!!!!
#19
These are so going to be at the £99 mark very soon. With the 8% quidco they are already under £150.

When you've got a laptop already I find it hard to justify the money at the moment.

If it seems slow then get a class 6 SDHC and run portable apps of that and it all runs fine. So run the OS off the SSD and the apps off the SDHC.

Voted cold as cheaper in Asda for the non SSD large hard drive.

But they don't have any stock nor are getting any. It's the old "they are cheaper here"....." well buy one there then".... "they don't have any".... "well ours will be that cheap when we dont have any"...

This netbook is great. Price/performance wise its fantastic value.

Just dont think you can get this and put XP on it. I've done it with two of them and the SSD is way too slow. My AAO has the proper hard disk and runs XP a treat.
#27
I bought one from comet and its good for what I want it for...
THE GOOD.
I use it to browse the web with firefox 3.0, I use either WIFI or my 3G dongle on network 3.
I watch TV using MythTV frontend (using the WIFI network form my MythTV backend)
I word process with Abiword (its MUCH more responsive than openoffice)
I watch videos or play mp3's with VLC
I load photos when away from home using Picasa.
It boots up from cold in under 20seconds (i just checked)
No money goes to micro$oft, and linux is a tinkerers delight!
The Disk space can be doubled with a £10 8gb class 6 SDHC card from play.com
or tripled for £20 16gb class 6 SDHC from mymemory.co.uk

THE BAD.
The SSD is not really up to making a hackintosh (running OS X)
the 512mb ram is less than ideal - i noticed an improvement after upgrading to 1.5gb
upgrading the ram was a pain in the **** (not recommended for the fainthearted)
If you are not used to linux, you may not like it.

Everything works right now, so i am not going to change anything until a version of Ubuntu arrives which works with all the hardware without any tinkering...

Best website for tips and hacks:

Yes when I put XP pro on with 512mb is was slow but put in a 512mb I had sitting about and its fine now. What I found even better is I run my apps off a SD card and my OS off the SSD and no lag at all.

Never really had a problem with Comet. When my washing machine broke they came out quickly to fix it with no hassles. Your mileage may vary of course though.

could i get an external 500GB hard drive to use on this or would it not pick it up as 500gb?

Why would it not? I know there can be problems addressing RAM over a certain size but I think you'll be fine with storage.
#33
i didn't know if it'd mess up or not, i'm sure i remember someone saying they got a netbook and it didn't recognize the hard drive, it only showed like 300gb of the 500gb or somet.

how much is the ram upgrade for these?
