Spotted this morning in Tesco, Goole.

Reduced to £189.99, which has to be the cheapest currently available? (Usual Tesco store price is £199.99)

The one in Tesco has 1GB RAM. :)
#3
It is still showing at £198 on the tesco.com website.
Is it only at that one store I wonder?
#4
what model exactly is it? linux? xp?

looks like its goin to be the linux 512mb ram 8gb ssd version
#5
if it has 1GB of ram than it is certainly a misprice. i woudl snap up the lot and get them on Ebay for a profit.
Not only are the 1GB model in short supply, they are also £248 and £269at the cheapest places i have seen.

It is this one, and they have them in Tesco Warrington too, saw them there on Saturday, they also have a pretty good Acer laptop for £350

Anyone know how these run with 512? Might buy from simplyacer if ok.
Moving to 1gb for another £10 would have been nice.....oh well.
#8
512 is more than enough for running Linux if you want to use it for word processing, listening to music, internet, playing basic games etc. I installed google earth on it and it died! That's not what the laptop is for though but I just wanted to compare the performance.
#9
the 512mb is soldered on and one slot is still free so you can easily add 1gb and have 1.5gb. which is more than enough even for xp
#10
You can add another 1gb but its a pain as you have to remove the keyboard. Look on youtube to see how tricky it is :)
#11
£179 in PC World for the same one.

The version of Linux on there runs perfectly with the 512 megs installed. Boots up in ~10 secs. I'm very impressed with mine.
#12
Im sure PC world was cheaper earlier....

I bought a Eee 901 White for 229, is that a good deal I wonder?
#13
get a clubcard and get £1.89 worth of points too!! (not much dunno why i needed the two !!)

£170 (pickup in store or + ~£2.50 delivered with a sim card) from tesco direct (when using the £9 voucher) http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/263576/acer-aspire-one-8-9-screen-a110l-8g/ also double clubcard points at the moment with tesco direct (free £10 evoucher for £100+ spend has now ended).

I've got an original eee 7 inch - I've upgraded the OS to ubuntu -netbook. - Ubuntu for small screens.

Slightly faster processor , more ram and storage are tempting - but not enough to get me to buy this. But the bigger screen and most importantly the screen resolution being bigger is what I will get me to buy it, 800x480 just isn't enough.

My original will always live on as a wireless mythtv frontend it rocks.

£180 in comet Swansea too

It is quite simple actually. I am partially sighted and I upgraded a friend's machine using this video as guidance:

Some important points' always earth yourself when working with computer components - they don't like static! Either touch a radiator frequently or wear a cheap wrist strap clipped to a radiator (I got mine from Deal Extreme for a few quid).

If you don't feel capable of doing this, PC World can upgrade your machine for a fee.

Don't forget Quidco! Effectively knocks the price down to £165.46!!
(I was lucky in that I bought one yesterday when the £10 e-voucher offer was on so effectively ended up paying £155.46!!)

Where did you get the eee901 from? I've been after one for a while, was it the 20gb model? A

Having checked their website are you sure you didn't get the 900?
#21
dont waste your time and money upgrading the memory if you're running linux, the machine works great on 512 - i'm using one now.

I bought a leather case off ebay for mine and 16gb memory card that will plug in the side. Handy for downloading movies onto from my pc. :)

I'm collecting mine from Tesco sometime over the weekend..can't wait..I'm really eager to find out what it's like!
What are your initial reactions, pgilc1? Worth the money? Good points? Bad points? Any tips?
I read somewhere that these units are in "simple mode" when you receive them, but a full "PC mode" can be unlocked....does anyone know how to do this?
#23
I've had the linux version for a couple of months and I am very happy with it. There are some very useful guides on the Aspire One forum including how to activate the Advanced mode:

From where?

I paid £279 for one in September - returned it 3 hours later but that's besides the point (replaced it with one of these Acer machines, actually)

It was instore, they had both to view on the shelf! I was in King's Lynn if that helps?

I played with both, but I couldn't see much difference except the stupid Acer bundle software (read bloatware). This Eee holds it's own quite nice on XP.

Yes, its cheaper now. Expired :)

You don't need 1gb RAM.

WOW great deal, I'll just keep checking on a regular basis till I find a similarly priced one. Been after a 901 for yonks but at £280 they're a little too pricey, at £229 I'd snap their hands off.

Yeah, keep an eye out, I also got price match on a 320GB USB powered WD HD :)

The only thing that made me return the EEE was once I noticed how poor quality the screen was - constantly looked grainy / greasy.

Every EEE on display was the same so it was clearly just cheap panels being used across the range and would be fine for most people but once I noticed it, it just annoyed me too much :)

Was a cracker of a machine apart from that, though.

The Acer seemed a better option for me at £100 less at the time, but for £40 less i'd not be so sure (if you can live with the screen thing on the EEE)
#32
Have tried both an Asus 4gb and the Acer One 8gb.

Much prefer the look and feel of the Acer personally. Very happy with linux, boots up in seconds.

To those who've bought the Acer A110, what cover/case if any did you get? I want a leather book type one but can only find them for the bigger 120gb model or those with the 6 cell battery.
#33
No case...have bought a cheap neoprene thing off ebay until I can find anything suitable.

The Tesco website offered a £10 e-voucher for orders placed by the 30th yet I have received nothing! Should the e-voucher have been delivered by email or should it have been a paper voucher within the parcel?
