Jump to unread Post a CommentIt should be able to. I got a similar type of computer to this (Zotac ZBox) and it does.
I know it says in the description, but it should be noted that this comes with Linux which is why the price is low. You can get one with windows installed for a bit more but less than the price of buying this and then forking out for Windows 7 to install.
I think the Zbox came out at less when buying it on it's own, adding ram and a hard drive and buying Windows 7 (upgrage copy) from software4students. You can install an upgrade copy on a new install like this buy installing the upgrade twice.
None of these are as powerful as a full desktop obviously, but are a great size to stick behind your tv and use as a media server. You can install various media software on it, but I use mine with itunes to run with the apple TV. Just waiting for hard drives to come back down in price now so I can replace the 500gb with a 1tb hard drive.
Good deal on this, but remember if you want windows you'll be spending a lot more money after purchase (but not this much!!! http://www.ebuyer.com/279901-acer-aspire-revo-r3700-nettop-pt-seme2-045)
If you want iplayer then you could go with the current 20% off games consoles and get a PS3 for £152 at Currys or Comet at the moment. On the PS3 you also get 4oD and ITV Player, plus a blu ray player and the best games console out there (open to debate, but no need to start that one here).

Bang on the money there with that advice in my opinion - I was having the very same conversation with someone at work that was undecided too.
With the 20% discount on a PS/3 you're getting so much more bang for your buck if your main interest is viewing on demand services - dont forget LoveFilm too.

Yes - you can run XBMC on a pi - you'd only do so if you had to.

Whut?
For media duties install Openelec. Very easy to do and runs like lightning.
What do you mean no HD from iplayer? I have the plugin for it in mine and can choose what def to use so put it to 1080p.
ATV works well but is more faff to set up (needs hacked).
Tried a WD Live before this and consider Apple TV but this just blows it away. Streaming from a Vu+ Duo and its just slick.

i've got the r3610 and that manages 720p mkv's ok over 200mbps homeplug, 1080p is not really watchable even from the hard disk (and wifi is useless for hd).
as far as iplayer goes, i don't think most isp's in the uk could give you a good 1080p streaming experience anyway and with linux you don't get hardware accelerated flash, so my r3610 struggles even with 480p.

what he's saying is that the PI is going to make a crap media centre. it can only use hardware acceleration with one specific codec in 1080p, in software mode it may struggle to play 480p divx, and its limited to 100mbps ethernet, so not going to be a useful hd streamer anyway unless you want to keep using a usb memory stick instead of a nas.
As i say invest in some decent homeplugs and your away !

ah well that may be the difference between the r3610's ION and the 3700's ION2 as even from the hard disk my r3610 won't play stutter-free (or audio in sync!) 1080p
