Acer Aspire S3 Ultrabook - i5 Processor, 4gb Ram, 13.3" Screen @ Currys - £550.99 Delivered using code

ptamblinptamblin

Been looking around for a laptop/ultrabook for the last few days and this price jumps out at me. £120 cheaper than amazon for a "budget" end ultrabook at just 1.35kg with generally good reviews and 4 - 5 hours battery life

Yes there are other laptops around with better specs like the Asus, Lenovo etc but they cost an awful lot more.

To get the price listed use the code FIVE to get 5% off price. also 1.5% cashback on quidco and topcashback obviously. Expires 23.59 on Thursday 26th April.

I have one of these and the Toshiba Z830 ultrabook and the build quality on this is actually better than the Toshiba. Not as good as the MacBook Air in terms of buils quality but it's not bad for £550.

I've put a real SSD (this apparently has a 20GB SSD for hibernation duties or something, I put a Crucial M4 in) in mine though as I don't need all the storage and it's super fast. This ultrabook can take 2.5" 7mm SSDs as opposed to the mSATA SSDs that the MBA, Samsung Series 9 (NP900X3A) and the Toshiba Z830 uses which means you can upgrade it easily. (Samsung 830 and Crucial M4s come as 7mm drives. Most Intel SSDs and the Crucial C300 and standard M4 have a 2.5mm spacer which you can take off).

EDIT: Btw, the i5 2467M is brilliant. It has stock speed of 1.4Ghz, and Turbos up to 2.3Ghz. I can play League of Legends on high with shadow on low with no lag at all.

Its got the real connectivity you need at a sane price.

If it came with a hybrid hard drive it would be even hotter.

Not seen any laptops with hybrid hard drives (and those have been out since 2010 or so) --
    I wonder why

This has got a 20gb SSD to assist with hibernation speeds. I am informed that this can not be used for storage.

That SSD seems to be used for instant hibernation.
Like many of these it is also awful for upgrades so bear that in mind.

How does something like this HP AMD fusion powered netbook compare? Looking for a laptop/netbook to do video editing...but don't want to spend too much. AMD Fusion seems to be a pretty good alternative to these pricey ultrabooks. Am I missing something? £300 is a big gulf in price...

If it's video editing this is going to "own" the E-450. Video editing requires CPU power, something that the E-450 doesn't have.

    Shame this isnt SSD!

    Edit:

Slightly smaller screen - 11.6" but this may be a better deal..
    Samsung Series 9 900X1B

£617 with FIVE code, and I believe you can claim the VAT back through samsung?

Ah well ... I guess there is a reason why this is that much more expensive!

    *edit - just been looking up the viability of video editing on the Fusion platform. It seems that some of the video editing programs are offering Fusion GPU optimised software;

Aye, probably not! Although 10 goals throughout would be a great saving :P
