Excuse my ignorance...

What are wrong with Acers?

And would a BlueRay combo drive read/write DVDs as well? (I assume this drive won't write BluRays?)

Good price £500 from Acer.

Acer are one of the better laptop makers. Not sure what James is on about. Decent spec, decent price.
#5
Acer laptops are on a par with other 'Top' manufacturers in my honest opinion.

Show me another laptop with the same spec anywhere near this price.

Good find OP ;-)

Nice start to the week :-)

Yeah acers are great laptops! I'm using one the now! 5920g. Never once had a problem with it and it's much better than my mates equal spec sony vaio. Very reliable computers having had three different brands i much prefer the acer.
Mind you if ur a snob who would rather have a fancy name instead of a decent laptop then acer won't be for you.

gutted!!

Just bought a notebook yesterday. If only I would have waited!!! Still tempted though

wifes had same acer laptop for 3 years......never missed a beat solid...........(please don't make this comment the kiss of death...:?)

Can someone clarify about the blu-ray combo drive:

Would a BlueRay combo drive read/write DVDs as well? (I assume this drive won't write BluRays?)

You can always purchase a laptop which has major problems,it doesnt mean the whole brand is "rubbish"
Any explanation of the problems etc?
excellent price, had several acers the high end models have been fine.Build quality is good.My current one has replaced a toshiba which was very problematic.
The multi drive will write and read to dvd but only read blu-ray.
#13
no it wont write blu rays only reads them

#15
Yes, blu ray combo just reads BR disks, but will read/write DVDs.

Good price. For those not wanting blu ray, Acer do a lappy with 15"screen, 3gb ram, athlon 2.1ghz and radeon 3200 for under £350.
#16
And why do retailers use crap such as 'Powerfully large 4gb ram'? Thats like Ford advertising their latest focus as having 'A Powerfully large boot'
#17
does this have HDMI output?
#18
Overall a good deal,

The brand is not bad at all..

bear in mind that its a AMD Turion,
which is the low end {less horse power, but better battery + cooler }processor from AMD

I have had a Turion 64 ML-30 some time ago.. firefox would choke on it {it had 2G of ram and not 3 }
exchanged that for a centrino c2d

I don't know where Acer have gained their sudden fame - many people on threads on this site have had bad experiences, some good. I have had two Acer laptops, one is about 4 now, and still fine, with only light use - a much more expensively spec-ed machine was a bit of a duffer, not much of a performer for it's price, and had packed in at a little over a year old :-(

It sort of bears out what I read - a mixed batch some good, some bad.

There was obviously something wrong with that laptop, ive had fire fox run well on a pentium 3.

I too hate Acers! Had 3 and NEVER had luck. including one that cost £1300 about 5 years ago. had to be replaced 3 times!. I bought 25 Acers for a project at work and vowed never to buy them again. things may have changed in the last few years, but you know what they say about a bad experience!

Well that depends on how many extensions and tab you have open.. [and what version of firefox ]
I have run firefox on older pentiums as well.. but then again those were the older versions and not the new ones with the spanky Javascript engines..

May be i should have been a bit clearer..

If you run a lot of extensions / plugins and browse with a lot of tabs open then firefox will choke for sure..

Rep added ,l in the war against the griefers!

I have an AA1 and a REVO

ACER are top three supplier ( by volume) may have surpassed DELL too.

Not an absolute indicator , I know.

Tip ; once out of warranty and if fan is noisy then consider - http://www.laptopfans.co.uk/

How would this fare as a gaming laptop? Would it handle Bioshock or Oblivion alright?
#25
Sounds a good deal to me. Not seen anything with Blu Ray at this price.
Does anyone know what OS is supplied?
#27
Any quidco? Also is it eligible for a free WIn7 upgrade?

ha ha ha. that's funny. Medion, in my opinion are definately one of the worst built laptops ever.

People are put off by Acer, their older laptops were not very good. I had a cheap one about 5 years ago, and the battery lasted about 45mins from new. Wasn't really that impressed but it was cheap. I remember taking it apart to fix some issue with it, and discovered that it had a desktop CPU in it, which is probably why the battery was naff!

I think nowadays, they are as good as all the other manufacturers, if not better then some.

totally agree with others about this. Acer are a very good make of laptops!

this is a very good deal, incredible price for a laptop with bluray + thoses specs. (tho it is one damn ugly laptop!!)
#32
does anybody have a cdiscount code that is still valid, delivery is £3.99. can anyone confirm this has hdmi?
edit according to acerdirect this laptop does not have hdmi http://www.acerdirect.co.uk/Acer_Aspire_5520G_Laptop_LX.AQU0X.077/version.asp
and this model is no longer is listed on acer website so i guess its a discontinued model.

I got the email this morning too

3% quidco

Just bought one............hope it doesnt suck!!

Ive had an acer aspire 3610 for over 6 years now. used for web photos music etc. never missed a beat but is now a bit slow and bursting at the seams with its 80G HD.

wanted a BR player for my plasma and anew lappy. two birds with one cliche.
#36
Looks really good! I have the 5920g and I'm incredibly happy with it.

Anyone know of a compatible BR drives with the 5920g? I'm pleased with HD-DVD, but I'd rather have BR in it and use the HD drive as an external one, possibly wiring it up to the Xbox.

Anyway- hot from me!
#37
Tempted by the hi spec at low price i bought an acer blu ray laptop earlier this year (think it was the 7720g) and right from the get go it had cold boot issues, took it back for a replacement, once again same problem so got a refund and bought an HP laptop instead and so far so good. Never had any Acer goods before and after this negative experience with the brand i certainly wouldnt go near them again.

Having had negative experiences with one of their laptops myself, I would be tempted to agree with you. Bought the laptop having enjoyed trouble free computing with one of their desktop machines. However, lockups, battery failures and dire performance on the laptop mean I would prefer to steer clear of them in future.

Evidently, there are plenty of others who have not had such problems. You pays your money, you takes your chances etc, etc...
#39
The problem with Acer don't use standard components in their laptops, not even within the same model. They use whatever cheap stuff they can get at any time which makes their laptops not very compatible. This has been worse since Vista was lunched. For instance, you need to use Acers bloatware (which slows down your computer) to keep your laptop cool.

I would never buy an Acer again. Maybe with Windows 7, some of those problems can be solved.

I would want to buy from a company which uses standard components, which are easily replaceable should something go wrong after the warranty is up.
#40
it doesnt qualify for a windows 7 upgrade
