Good Price.

Go buy 2 gb of memory and fit it for £30 all in (and it's waaaay easier to do it on one of these than one of those netbooks) and you have a better specced PC than one of those netbooks with no cd drive.

They don't give the model number but if it's the 5315 that's an awful model with lots of problems. Check the forums (avforum and linuxforum). Noisy, overheating, etc. I won't vote because I'm not sure about the model. Best check it out before purchase.
#5
Gr8 price though... cant see any1 beating it at that price !
#6
Brilliant price. As stated add 2gb of Ram cheaply and this is a brilliant machine for the money.

This sounds distinctly like the laptop I bought for my father 6 months ago for £350.

And contrary to what people have said, the one I bought has never had an issue with noise or overheating. It's now running 2gb memory and my old dad loves it to sit in the kitchen playing simple games and surfing. On forums, you always get buyers slatting their laptops. It's very rare people take the time to go online to say they're ok.

From my experience, i've found Fujitsu's and HP's to be the most troublesome

In fact, i've had more issues with the Sony Vaio I bought 4 weeks ago than my fathers!!!

A good budget laptop

Yep, Very lame CPU, Yes you can stick a couple of GB of Ram in and be restricted by the speed of the CPU.

Battery life will probably be very poor.

It's still a good deal though, If it's what you want.

Nothing wrong with this - at the price - can run XP without issues as is - adding 1 or 2GB would improve things .

Vista is another story - deffo 2GB required.

At this price it's a hot bargain.

Ignore slinkydonkey - he's simply acting out his immature persona!

Seriously, this CPU isnt bad at all. The 520 is based on the Merom Core (Core 2)

People spend £300 on netbooks with an Atom CPU, an Atom is FAR FAR worse than this but no one brings that up!

It is just the Celeron name which gives the bad reputation.

... Very lame CPU ... .

At this price - that's a touch harsh - it's the equivalent of the old 1.6GHz Centrino minus Speedstep OK battery life won't be the same but if you're on a tight budget this is an ideal home based laptop for office work and browsing.

Yeah great advice did you forget something? it does not come with XP! so you would have to go out there and buy it.. then install it..great advice well done!

Does anyone know the exact speed of this laptop? Just want to confirm as I can't see it at all - must be going blind in my old age! :-D

Just a figure of speech with regards to the CPU, If you read further I state it's a good deal for those who want it.

Just don't expect it to perform miracles, Especially with the measly 512MB of Ram with Vista on.

I can never understand why companies sell such machines with Vista, Vista as a bare minimum should have 1GB.

512MB is fine with XP.

If you buy this

1. Either upgrade your ram or
2. Install XP or Linux etc...

I got the 5310 from bargain crazy last week but cost £203 delivered. It has the same cpu too.

Now it had vista basic and 512mb of ram in it and it was a tad sluggish. It now has vista ultimate on it and 2 gig of ram and it is actually very good and has no problems at all and runs very cool, the fan hardly comes on and it's the coolest quietest laptop I have had to date. My wifes dual core dell with 3 gig of ram is very hot and runs vista no faster than this one so it's a bargain in my opinion.

Now I am sure it wont handle games or anything high powered too well but if all you need is something to go online, download and documents etc it is fine. The screen is 10 times better that the rubbish on the dell that's for sure.

A carp laptop to you doesn't make it a rubbish laptop for everyone. For the price it was a great deal for those who just want a simple machine for surfing the web, etc... the RAM can be updated to 2GB for circa £15.

Unless of course you can show us all something better for the same price?

As for being "crazy to try to run XP on that CPU" - you haven't got a clue what you're talking about. :whistling:

As for being "crazy to try to run XP on that CPU" - you haven't got a clue what you're talking about. Well thats your opinion I have 30 years IT expereince and work for the 10th largest software company in the world and besides that I have owned a laptop with this CPU and it ran like a dog.

Well this one runs great here so maybe not all of them run so bad. I do know all laptops I have ever bought run completely carp with the factory install and are transformed after a clean install. This one is no different on that front.

It replaced an old acer aspire 5000 which had 2 gig ram and a amd turion 64 1.6 and this is a massive step up as far as performance which I was surprised at to be honest.

Hi All

I'm looking to buy my lady a laptop for christmas and was going to buy her a netbook but surely for this price this would be better? She'll only use it for going on facebook etc and putting the babies photos on. I've missed out on this deal but does anyone know of anymore like this in price?

Thanks

Neil

Something like this will be absolutly fine for your lady just with a bit more memory which is cheap enough anyhow. Just check back to see if they get any more.

You must be in the wrong job then to think that THIS Celeron will not run XP or Vista reasonably!

Loading an OS is not like encoding HD video, and I think you find that the reason your laptop ran like a dog was due to the lack of ram, a slow hard drive or software etc rather than the CPU.

By all means suggest what CPU you think will be adequate to run XP/Vista. :whistling:

30 years IT expereince ?

10th largest software company in the world ?

Am I supposed to be impressed ? No !

Because you haven't got a clue !

Why do I say that - because I've worked for one of the largest PC manufacturers (HP) for many years, and have used more laptops than you could ever imagine. Let me assure the readers of this thread that the Celeron M520 is quite capable of running XP in 512MB and Vista (non Aero) in 2GB without a sweat!
#36
30 years of experience haha what does that mean? only the last 12 months are relevant when refering to hardware,,,,, you made yourself look a bit of an idiot mate

Good PC for the money no ifs,,,,,,,, no buts!!!!!!!! if you want games get an XBOX it does ir much better than a PC

Do you even know what kind of CPUs were around when XP originally launched? (to save you looking at wikipedia, in 2001 pentium 3s were common, with a "fast" PC having an 800MHz P3. P4s werent even out :) I myself had a celeron 333MHz when I was beta testing Whistler, and it was more than fast enough.

If your laptop ran like a dog with this CPU, which is multiple times quicker than the minimum recommended CPU, then it sounds to me like your 30 years IT experience (lol) hasnt paid off
#38
If XP runs ok on my eee with a 600 MHz Celeron then this Merom-Celeron will be fine.

Needs more RAM but a bargain price.
#39
For the price there should be no reason for negative comments, add more memory as already stated and it's cheap easy basic computing.

In hindsight the Celeron CPU I had on my old laptop was a lot worse than this one it has to be said they are a lot better than they use to be looking on here for example it does score ok. It's funny how some people react on here its great we can all have are own opinions the fact is people will always disagree for the money id say yes its an ok deal but you might have to spend another £100 upgrading the HD and the RAM. I got an Acer 5720 on here for for £250 with a Core 2 Duo which would blow this one out the water...
