Hot, despite the crippled O.S.

Is there a difference between single core N550 or dual core N550? Or is there only one type?

Also, does this come with HDMI? Would this do 1080p?

very hot price for the n550
#4
The N550 is DC.
#5
And is a considerably improved performance experience over it's 270/455 cousins.
#6
N550 is a dual core n450 N270 are both single core, N550 allows DDR3 ram which is much faster the DDR2 so it might be enough for most operations
#7
has this got HDMI outlet
#8
According to amazon, it has a VGA port.
#9
and youtube videos :(

Numpti

Looks to have great battery life, which is great given the extra power the dual core will offer.

How does this compare to the MSI U135? :|
#14
just to clarify please ..

a "refurbished " item is very possibly a faulty item which has been repaired for resale ?

if that is the case then surely there must be many more people like me steering well clear of "refurbished "stock

To be honest the biggest difference is down to the CPU and the memory type being used - only other one might be the operating system, as I've seen the MSI U135 being sold with Windows XP Home Edition in the past.

I suppose one good thing for refurbished stock is the hardware fault/s should be resolved but then again there's always the potential of the fault/s not being repaired fully ;) that's the catch 22 IMHO.

I refurb laptops and work for a company that refurbs them. We get faulty refurbs sometimes sent to us as fully working from suppliers. It all depends on the care taken to refurb them. When I do it they get a full overhaul, some are just open box stock they're part of a deal say at CPW and if you quit your phone contract within 14 days you have to give back the laptop that was supplied with the deal, so there's often nothing wrong with it and it's simply checked that it's fit for resale. Our refurbs are sold with 3 months to 12 months based on their condition and age.

I've bought loads of items from the Argos ebay outlet including 2 refurb laptops which both arrived as brand new apart from that they were in brown boxes and not the original retail box. I've been very pleased with all of the items and the Acer laptops I bought was very nearly half price.

I am guessing that Argos is clearing out stock of these netbooks as more and more internet tablets come to market and the Google Chrome tablet will be launched later this year.

Very detailed review here.
I'd been wondering about a netbook or an i3 laptop, since most netbooks with any grunt to them seemed to be over £200 which is almost in i3 price range.

A product like this at this price rather tips the balance in favour of the netbook. Wish the resolution was a little higher, but still...

I have read a bit about the dual core atom processors and they are still very poor compared to a stander laptop. you wont notice much difference compared to the single cores. not voting as acer are very hit and miss.

Review I linked benchmarked it as 60% faster than comparable single core processors.

Still not in the same league as i3 processors, but a step up, and this is about half the price of many i3 computers.

Am I right in thinking the review says that the keyboard has to be removed to upgrade/access the memory ?? If so ..can anyone comment on how easy this is ??
I've ordered one anyway as a little upgrade to my Acer Aspire 250..mainly for better (hopefully)video playback..

Here's a video from YouTube - it's in German but the quality of the video is good for reference purposes.

You can take that benchmarked 60% with a pinch of salt, you won't see that during actual use. But either way, Atom CPUs are (read: should be) cheap for a reason and this is worth the money if you have realistic expectations.
#30
The biggest benchmark jump for users to see in reality is that the dual core will play 1080P video files, a single core will only manage 720P.
#31
And obviously it's ability to run 2 threads simultaneously.
#32
That said even a pared down W7 will still use chunk of that RAM. Pagefile is going to be busy/slow (not the processors fault)

Install Ubuntu. It will even safely partitions your drive so that you don’t have to reinstall your existing OS. You can boot into windows or Ubuntu at your pleasure. It also has windows compatible office suite.

Not sure how relevant that is with a screen resolution of 1024x600?
#35
Its not relevant , just the usual faulty information that flys around, i have one of these and a dell mini 1011 and there isnt that much difference in speed for what we use them for -- we browseing, youtube, forums , facebook , video , believe what you want about inflated processor specs and biased benchmarks theyre all talking sh!t , like i said i actually HAVE these and there isnt much difference in speed not enough for you to cry about.
#36
I just got one, thanks for the heads-up. If you're thinking about it, be quick, think there is only one left!!!

listing has ended= expired

its still available in different colours and price if interested, http://****.co.uk/Argos-Outlet__?_nkw=ACER+D255&LH_TitleDesc=1&gobutton=

I ordered on Sunday and it arrived today..totally as new.Initial impressions are that it is definately a bit quicker than my single core D250.
Removed the crapware that is installed immediately..it can be described as less-slow rather than speedy though :p
Not that I was expecting anything else !

My two arrived today. Both like new. And it has got Android aswell :)
