Great price for Vista Machine

Voted Hot :)

Average processor, average memory, small hard drive, small screen. Good budget choice, but Id recommend spending more on a bit of kit to run Vista.

£9.95 + vat shipping to be added

£245.52 in total

good size screen , pretty portable

Seems a great machine for XP/Ubuntu but i would remove "Microsoft Windows Vista Home Basic" as that's one of the worse OS's from Microsoft

You cant...but you can spend £50 more and get a much better machine.

This laptop is pointless in many ways, as it will simply die a death on Vista(which comes preinstalled).

For the person above mentioning the EEE pcs - not going to start a protracted debate about it, but its obvious that you dont understand what the EEE pcs are for.

With regards this machine, cheap price, but for an incredibly low spec - its the processor that destroys it for me - voted cold.

(And of course, its an acer!).

I agree on getting rid of Vista as its awful and putting XP on, but Windows ME was worse than Vista !

Buy the Dell, today between 2-4pm. You won't get a better deal for a long time I suspect!

Thanks Mike. I got an Inspiron 6400 on your advice just over a year ago and am pleased with it.
DVD drive broke a month out of warranty and they replaced it FOC - well impressed.
Does that mean he'll have a better laptop than me?? Can't have that!!

Could you explain "Intel® Pro Wireless 3945 (802.11 a/b/g) MiniPCI Card
OR (Dell Wireless 1395 (802.11 b/g) MiniPCI Card) (On suffix A ecode)" please?

Technology seems to be getting cheaper and cheaper. Acer are ok for warranties have dealt with them a couple of years ago. But they sales have grown so no idea what after service you will get. But very good price for a brand new laptop.

I'm with him on this one, but I fail to understand why this one has gone so hot?

The other one's much better than this one for £30 more (2-4pm, but hey we can wait 2 hours, can't we?)

Vista WILL kill this machine. On the other one, you can call Dell and have XP put on for free :)

FWIW - I bought a brand new Acer product few moons ago, warranty problems? thought hey no worries, this is no dodgy eBay goods, I'll just give them a call!

Wrong I was... spent hours on 0870 numbers to be shouted at/abused and have the phone put down on! I'll never deal with them again.

that's just me, though.

These are simply the Wifi fcards built in to the laptop, it seems that there are 2 different cards available, I honestly couldn't tell you which one to go for, there may be some reference to which is best somewhere in the Dell thread. If you look in the OP for the Dell it mentioned the 2 different ecodes at the bottom of the post.

BTW, was it definitley me who recommended the Inspiron, I guess it could have been (I can't remember that far back!) but you may have got me mixed up with the ubiquitous MikeT - who doesn't work for Dell by the way!

Apologies, got my "Mikes" mixed up!! Hit 35 and everythings going down hill!!

Will look into the Wifi cards.

Dell warranty - basically contacted them and chatted live online - had to get my screwdrivers to remove the drive - 10 minutes later - drive dead - offered new one FOC - delivered next working day - problem sorted. Well chuffed.

No problem, I'm not 35 for a few more months yet and things are going downhill already (hair, waistline etc etc)

I guessed from the "73" in your name!!

Am 80% sure I'm gonna get the Dell so thanks. Think the more I look at the deals and Laptops that are out there, the more confused I get!!

Agreed the Dell is about 100% better value for money and Vista would run like a dog (a scabby) dog on 1GB Memory and a Celeron

I've got a c2d 2.2ghz desktop with 2GB RAM and Vista! and I hate the bl00dy machine!

I've got another core duo desktop machine that I loathe to use :( Vista again, the hardware is just not compatible with XP :(

I would rather feel comfortable with the upgrade version of the same

Acer EXTENSA 5220-201G08Mi CELM 550 2.0Ghz 80GB 1GB 15.4IN DVD¦RW Wifi Vista HB LX.E870Y.261

Acer Extensa 5220-201G08Mi - C 550 / 2 GHz - RAM 1 GB - HDD 80 GB - DVDRW (R DL) / DVD-RAM - GMA X3100 Dynamic Video Memory Technology 4.0 - Gigabit Ethernet - WLAN : 802.11b/g - Vista Home Basic - 15.4" Widescreen TFT 1280 x 800 ( WXGA ) CrystalBrite

You will need the faster processor to survive with Vista running on the machine

Average price hardly a 20 quids more expensive

Unless if it is the portability you are after

If it is medium range price you are looking for than your best options will be

1. Dell
2 Asus
3. Hp
4. Acer - prone to breaking down
