Cheap for a reason, check out my experience below:

Cheap components used which can mean you will be put into the hands of the greemed reaper, i.e. Acer Repair centre. This sub contracted party is the biggest joke in the world. Just read blackster's experience in the link above as well (post #37), makes mine look decent compared to that blackster went through.

Celeron M 4xx and 5xx is a decent cpu (Dothan,Yonah,Merom core - the same as Pentium M,Core Sole and half of DualCore :)) and has nothing to do with Celeron D for desktops (rubbish).

I think whoever buys this laptop will have to upgrade the memory to at least 1Gig. Running Vista on half a gig of RAM! not ideal.
#5
if this came with xp it wouldn't be so bad, but 512mb and Vista not great...cheap, but personally I would save just that little bit more and get something just that big bit better.
#6
Its not the same as Core Solo. Its actually a single core of the Core 2 with 1MB cache. It is actually rated faster than a Pentium 4 3.6GHZ.
Core Solo was 32 bit. This is 64 bit.
Up to date embedded X3100 graphics. (the fastest currently availabe in Europe)

£12 or so to spend on extra Ram 1GB of but that could wait anyway..

A decent 6 cell battery and built in card reader make it an amazing deal.

Celeron / Celeron-M can't SpeedStep either.

Core Solo / Duo / 2 Duo, even Pentium-M are lightyears better this processor.

Still, its a good price though.
#8
Core Solo is 32 bit!!!!!!!!! Last generation. Speedstep and more cache yes. Would give maybe 15 mins or so better battery life but sadly you dont get any budget Intel speedstep.

Personally I think they should be fined for negative environmental impact in their marketing strategy but thats beside the point.

You are right but I have not written that the 5xx is a Core Solo ;).

I read some tests and review a while ago and as I remember the Pentium M was approx. 1-6% faster (depend on application) than Celeron 4xx and slower than serie 5xx.

Great value @£229 , people going for the rock bottom price would be happy with this. Just waiting for a celeron to drop to £200 then I buy and kiss good bye to Eeepc £200+ and Elonex One £100+ as each one of these need another at least £20 -£60 spending on extras to make them usable (flash stick, USB DVD drive etc.)!

I have owned and still own 3-4 different laptops (and one desktop) from Acer, and I have not encountered that many problems from them. I believe fujitsu cause more problems than acers. For the price of £229, you are getting a brand new brandname product from a reputable online shop, part of the DSG Dixons/Currys/PC World Empire. With Vista basic, I would get another 512 MB (for as little as 6-7 quid on eBay) to get it to run smoothly.

Buy this at your own risk, but don't expect any customer support if it ever breaks down

Voted Cold as it's an Acer
#13
it baffled me why so many hot items get bypassed.
Its the search and destroy vandals basically making this site unreflective of what is actually value.

If you do want a good deal, search this site extremely well. If it is Apple, Acer, Dell and am sure many many others if the 'haters' get there first you will certainly miss it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#14
Neither hot nor cold from me. The price is OK, but they really shouldn't have put Vista on this. If the only options are the hassle of another £10 on RAM or removing Vista to replace it with something more suitable then there are probably other options that are more appealing.

Good deal if £230 is really maxing your budget, but poor if you can afford another £30.

An earlier poster compared this to the eee PC. You can't. I could say my Rover is better than a Lotus Elise because it has more seats, more boot space, better economy etc, but I know which one is worth more. The eee is an ultra portable, and way cheaper than anything in it's range.
#15
I cant see anything better for another £30 apart from a Dell or refurbished.
And this is certainly better looking than the cheap Dell.
#16
Does it have wifi?
#17
Yes it has WiFi, it doesn't have bluetooth, no great loss.

More memory from play for £7.99,512mb.
