Acer Ferrari 1100-704G25Mn - 4GB RAM, 64-bit Vista Ultimate, 12.1" screen, 1.15kg - £499.99

£499.99 @ Testing
I saw this deal and thought it looked like a bargain. Is it really only 1.15kg? Does anybody know of any 64-bit OS laptops that can take upto 8GB RAM? I would really appreciate some guidance on this. …

What do you guys think about this laptop?

Pro and cons
#2
Seems a bit too light, more likely to be 2KG still not bad.

This is quite an old one now (just refreshed every now and then), mix of old and new tech. The CPU is a breathed on athlon of old, not great when compared with intel even at that clock speed.

HD DVD rom *groan*

Svideo out not HDMI.. it's just a shame that the little things aren't in place.

Nice LED backlit screen though.. £500. It's not a bargain but it's good. gonna add heat :)

I think the design is really nice:http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:3GV0YtmewxKziM:http://www.clubafaceri.ro/files/clients/1/29897/product225911_big.jpg

Have you seen any 64-bit laptops with more than 4GB RAM for the same price? I think the aesthetics of this laptop are great, but I wanted to see if there was more power 'under the bonnet' elsewhere?
#6
Black Ferrari no thanks but still hot :p
#7
have some heat. its not perfect, but its a 12" portable, lightweight with a fast amd cpu, plenty of ram and good looks. things that i dont like about this is it has 250gb hard drive, most laptops at this price have 320gb, hd dvd instead of blu ray and i never heard of this retailer. To sum it up i want one!

It's a good point about the retailer. Has anybody purchased anything from them before?

I was worried when I saw this: http://www.fraudwatchinternational.com/fake-jobs/xenextech/
#11
Wonder what the battery life is like? If it's any good it would be an option for those needing a resonably portable laptop with more power than a netbook.
#12
I put Xenex Technologies into google as I saw the address:

Xenex Technologies Limited
t/a thePCbusiness.com
Xenex House
90 New Town Row
Birmingham
B6 4HZ

There is definitely a shop there according to street view: http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?hl=en&q=90%20New%20Town%20Row&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl

Has anybody else done any research?

Any of the modern C2D chips or the AMD X2s will happily let you install Vista or Win7 64 Bit The C2Ds are generally faster although this is a reliable speed. I wouldnt bother installing x64 systems on anything less than 4 gigs of RAM the benefits will be non existant. This system has shared graphics and thus borrows RAM for video usage as such you will only have JUST over 4GB of memory and a tiny fraction wont be usable due to addressing limitations. Therefore i would suggest a 42 bit x86 operating system would be better here.

I went to DELL and looked at the XPS M1330. The 64-bit operating system is free. How much would it cost me to upgrade the RAM to 8GB if I bought it 3rd party?

Here are the stats? Does anybody know if there is something about this price with 64-bit Windows Vista Ultimate?

Here's a review:

http://reviews.cnet.co.uk/laptops/0,39030092,49296915,00.htm

Basically its a stylish laptop, with good connectivity , but critised for high price - at the time of review, that laptop costs £1400. But I think the price now is pretty decent. The down side, is poorer CPU performance, and battery performance relative to Intel C2D powered machines.

Specification is pants, mixed at best. If you want to buy it for the Ferrari crap on the front then do so. But don't expect it to be as fast as a Ferrari.

It will cost more than its worth to do so as they generally fill all the DIMMs with the cheapest RAM combinations they can. Many machines wont even support 8 Gigabytes of RAM. You really wont notice the difference im sure, spend the extra money on a better overall laptop

I've got an Acer and several friends with Acers and they have all been fine. I've seen Dell power supplies which fail, an HP with a duff hard drive and a Sony with a screen which failed after only 4 months. All manufacturers put out the occasional duff machine. I have an Acer 8920g myself and it seems reasonably well built and pretty robust.

Acer's customer support is no worse than HP's or Dell's in my experience. I called them recently to find out what external screen resolutions my laptop would support and they were fast to respond to the phone and couldn't have been more helpful. Dell has excellent support but it can still take an age to get through to their phone support lines at times.
#24
Whilst I am a big fan of Acers (who usually offer exceptional value for money), this is quite expensive for what you actually get. Poor graphics chipset, so-so CPU and a HD drive rather than a blu ray... £100 less and it might be a decent package.

Thanks for your reply Blackster. A lots of people are quite scared of buying Acer products. They also complained about their customer service. I have never bought any Acer, so I will stay away from them. Quite a few people said "NO, Don't buy it" when I asked them about Acer.
#27
Mixed bag of experiences with Acers, not going to advise on quality either way.

I still think this deal is rubbish though.
#28
my xps m1330 is upgradable to 8gb ram
#29
Most laptops sold in the last 2 or 3 years could support 8GB ram, and pretty much every laptop sold since the launch of Core 2 Duo, in 2007 has been able to run X64 OS. AMD powered laptops has done so for even longer.

Those aren't really the features worth buying a laptop for, afterall 8GB upgrade is disportionally expensive, and 64 bit OS sometimes have driver issues, that stops them

I've had an Acer laptop for the last 4 years build quality has been fine, customer service I've had far worse....Dell for instance. Of course you will find good and bad feedback concerning every make of PC and Laptop, exactly the same happens with makes of car some people will only buy that make and others will never buy that make again. I'm wondering why you consider your view is any more pertinent than anyone elses?

I'm still using the acer laptop I bought for Uni in 2002. I've only upgraded the ram and harddrive and it's on its second battery but still going strong. Very impressed and highly recommended.

i bought used acer aspire 5000 laptop (£160) about 3 years ago AND it still works fine...just the fan is noisy!
i bought sony vaio fz21m brand new ( £700) about 1.5 years ago and the GPU died! sony chrages 35pence per minute call to tell you that if your laptop is out of warranty they will charge you £600 to fix it! The call lasts about 7 minute!
Whether acer is good or not ....i would say it depends on the machine itself and the usage too!
