IPS is best for graphics programs, as it keeps the colours truer (less colour shift) AND it allows for wide viewing angles. This screen would be fine for gaming, though, because when gaming you are usually directly in front of the screen.
Response time should be the key factor, among others, you are looking for in a gaming monitor. IPS monitors, until recently, have not had a low enough response time needed for gaming (<5ms) They are also the more expensive type of panels. Lower response time (the time it takes for a pixel to go from grey-grey or black-white-black (dependant upon which test is used)) means you will get less 'ghosting' (blurry images during fast moving scenes). It really will save your eyes a lot of strain having a low response time (and high refresh rate, for that matter!).
This monitor has 5ms response time which is perfectly adequate and is the maximum expected for a gaming monitor nowadays.
I agree 24 inches is too big for gaming if you were, say, sitting at a desk with the screen less than 2 feet away. Using this chart you can see that for this 24 inch 1920x1080 screen, in order to properly perceive all detail on the screen, you would have to be at an optimum 37.66 inches away (just under a metre). Most people at a desk are much closer than that. But with FPS games, most people don't need to see things around the edge in detail, they just want good peripheral vision so that they can react quickly. That's why gaming monitors tend to be on the big side compared to viewing distance.
As for the resolution, well lots of people use their computers for streaming HD movies or internet TV, or use game pads with their games and sit further away; and 1920x1080 means you get more real estate on your desktop as well. Also, people with sight problems would need a lower resolution / bigger screen combination, not high res. :D
BTW, good deal X)

I purchased one of those LG IPS monitors.
When the screen is dark on my Xbox, you can notice a bit of flickering, but it doesn't really affect you and you rarely notice it.
Cracking monitor, I got the 22" one and I'm really pleased with it. Really thin, really smart-looking.
I think it's due to the thinness it's not mountable. Have seen the same with similar before.
