Very nice ultraportable
For those who missed the 8371 this is the slightly newer version with shiny rather than matt screen but has 500GB HD and Win7 Home Premium 64bit AND HDMI instead :-)

SU9400 (ULV dual core) processor, 4G RAM, 500GB HD, Bluetooth, Switchable ATi4330 dediated gaming graphics, 13.3" HD screem HDMI 8hours battery !!
5-in1 Card reader, 3 x USB, 2.0MPix camera, etc. etc.

I almost ordered the 8371 but left it as it had no HDMI whereas this does :-)

How "switchable" is the graphics card?
#3
Wish I had the cash. Only way I am going to get a laptop is through credit options, just a shame the catalogues generally have bad stock compared to the rest.

From the review, I think it uses the dedicated card when plugged in to a power socket, and when using the battery it uses the integrated graphics chip by default (to save battery) and lets you press something to use the dedicated card instead.

The 4330 should run L4D in low settings at a playable framerate.

great price, excellent battery too. Only battery i know that lasts as long as the mac and has HDMI too. heat added... hope this gets as hot as the sun
#6
Im so tempted
#7
GREAT company, GREAT laptop.

Hate to say it OP but anyone who ordered the 8371 over the weekend has had their order upgraded to this for free.

Anyway, even at this price, it's a fantastic laptop!
#8
Sounds fab. I ordered the £299 Acer recently posted but I think this is it's equal in terms of value
#9

I got my Acer 4820T from Very.co.uk using 10% off code for new Credit accounts. Was one of the best prices around too after that discount.

e.g.
http://www.very.co.uk/acer-156in-250gb-notebook-with-windows-7-software-aspire-5551/743691314.prd?browseToken=/b/4873/s/price,1&trail=4739-4872-4873&prdToken=/p/prod5900482-sku8832157

This Acer Aspire 5551 is £315 on a new credit account, which is £10 cheaper than OYYY who seam to be the cheapest around.

Been looking at this all week so tempted.

First post here hi everyone.
#12
The Processor might be a bit weak, but for those that are looking for a Travel companion rather than a full power system, it'll do just fine. The price is brilliant
#13
This has Bluetooth and the 8371 doesnt, however nothing in the specs say this has switch-able graphics like the 8371, just the HD4330.

Speaking of credit, does anyone know where to get this on credit?

That linked one looks good.
Anyone know of a site that shows what laptop/notebook/netbook graphic cards can do ?. While I would love a pure gaming one I think that is out of my price range, if I can get one that will play some older games I'm happy.

They don't explicitly say which graphics are in the Aspire 5551 but it should be this one (but I'm not 100% sure)
http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Radeon-HD-4250.29664.0.html

That'll give you an idea of what it's capable of graphics wise.
Some older games playable on Low settings.

I have the 3810TZ which i brought 4 or so weeks ago from saveonlaptops.co.uk

It's exactly what i wanted in that i could switch graphics, lasts up to 9 hours (i've gotten readings of 4 - 8.5hours remaining), light - 1.6kg (half of my dell vostro 1500), Wi-Fi that finds everything easily and is quick (B/G/N), extendable RAM to 8GB, HDMI, 5-in-1 card reader and charges in around 2.5-3 hours.

The only things i don't like about mine, is that the USB can be a bit slow, the sound card is awful, and the keyboard is raised therefore it's hard to clean unless you use a vacuum cleaner or compressed air can.

The screen is nice and bright but can have weird angles.

I use mine for Uni, for which involves note taking, programming (netbeans, C++ etc), surfing net. The graphics card can handle most videos at 720p but can sometimes jutter. Mine came with Win7 home but i replaced that with a copy of Win7 pro x64bit which works well.

My specs are: SU4100 (1.3GHz 800mhz FSB)
Radeon HD 4330
13.3" HD LED LCD
4GB DDR3 1066mhz (up to 8GB)
320GB HD
6 cell battery.

This 3810TG comes with intel SU9400 (1.4GHz), 500GB hard drive and bluetooth extra. The graphics card is the same which does indeed switch. When you unplug the AC it switches on an eco-friendly light which also in turn switches the radeon to the intel onboard GPU. Pretty neat, and can be changed manually back and forth whenever necessary. I like how there's a button to turn the mouse pad off which allows for pure typing.

8371 does have Bluetooth

ive had this laptop for over a year now, cost me £800 when it came out!

you can choose between which graphics card you want whether its plugged in our not

i am onto my 4th battery from acer as after a couple of months they wont charge past 86% and it seems to be a common problem with some other people on the acer forums

the battery lasts about 5 1/2 hours surfings web and watching videos

it stays pretty silent too when you run it from the battery

Ordered. Thanks been on the look out for a good laptop deal for a while. Hoping it comes before xmas.

You can also:

1) add a WWAN (3g) card cheaply.
I bought one from **** and they should be around £18-26 unlocked.
Model Sierra MC8775
You need to unscrew the base of the PC to insert it into the spare slot.

2) install a half height SSD card (as a second HD) in a spare slot!

3) safely overclock the processor to 1.8MHz to improve speed even further.

Info here at the overclockers forum -->

http://forums.overclockers.co.uk/showthread.php?p=17919139

I think that makes this little pc an even better buy :-)

This looks a very good deal I am tempted to cancel my order for the 5551a as this has the dedicated graphics. Anyone with better knowledge than me have any thoughts?

It is the other way around !

This (and gloss screen) was the deal-breaker for me, so I've got 8371.

Sorry to sound like a noob but I need some certainty before I take the plunge!

Will this handle 1080p BR rips without stuttering?
Can the audio be output in digital bitstream for connection to an AV receiver?
Can the audio be output through HDMI?

Cheers!
#37
