Most netbooks are in the same boat, Think I would prefer one of these with the bigger screen than a netbook, I'd probably want to dump Vista though.

Deffinately, I'd even prefer Windows 7 Starter over Vista, This would be a good price at £300 so thinking of getting Win 7 student for £30 odd and away we go

Agreed, a nice dual core would be better, but then again I have a 14" toshiba thing like this that I got for the missus that has i3 and 4gb and that cost me £700... So for £230 I'd take this over an Atom any day

Can anyone find anything better before I buy? (It's for my 12 Year old so I think It'll be fine for her) but if there's a better deal out there for a decent brand with good battery life and good size screen I'd love to know

Hot! This will supplement my 17" desktop replacement nicely.
I have a spare win7 licence too - so the Vista thing doesn't bother me.

Excellent deal. I've been looking at these for a while and this is a real bargain. Bought one for me and one for a colleague... well pleased! Thanks hmmmnice111 :)

I was going to order one then i read the reviews :-(
Seems the single core processor is to slow maxs out even just on webpages.
A real shame coz the other specs are good but the main processor is poor.
Just like having a ferrari with a daewoo engine in it!!

On a plus side its £330 on argos site so £100 saving

How do we know it is Vista and not W7? Not clear from ebay site.

Oops. Refresh of the ebay page gave the details.

Just read this, Core 2 Solo four times as fast as Atom?

I can only laugh at people posting numbers in this thread...

I have many laptops and two different netbooks. It just SO funny when you see people posting nubers from benchmarks..

I tested these units in REALITY with REAL apps.

Again the results show VMware is TWICE as fast on even an 800mhz Core2Solo which results in Core2Solo having FOUR times the performance clock for clock. Dont believe me? Try yourselves and stop posting useless numbers benchmarks that do nothing...

Youtube HD video the 800mhz Core2Solo handled with NO help from the GPU all the while the Atom produced a slide show. Again, Core2Solo is EASILY FOUR times as fast clock for clock. Dont believe me??? Simply try running this video on your Atom and make sure to select HD version. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zvCUmeoHpw

So far in REAL world Apps Atom = 400mhz Core2Solo

You guys are having a hard time understanding this but all you have to do is try for yourselves. The problem is most people want to be ignorant to the shockingly awful performance the Atom provides.

I would HIGHLY recommend NOT to purchase an Atom based unit. Im not even joking here people. Get a AMD NEO or Core2Solo based unit. You are throwing your money away on the useless Atom.

nothing like plugging your own deal:),calm down dude people on here like to make there own mind up,do you work in advertising by any chance :P

I agree Atom is shockingly awful. But these Core2Solo processors are still no good for running Windows Vista. The experience will be horrible unless you are comfortable upgrading to Windows 7 yourself, and paying the license fee. Also it's an Acer. I wouldn't get too excited about buying anything from them. Just Google for stories about reliability and how they handle warranty repairs. Apple they are not for exceptional customer care and service. So this deal is exactly £229.00 to expensive for me. :)
#19
Bit like having a BMW with a 1.0 basic engine, nevertheless, this deal is leagues ahead of your standard 10" netbook. Nothing wrong with Acer and absolutely confident this will run all the basic stuff with no problems - just dont expect it to run multiple apps like a dual core. If you're on a tight budget then its got to be a bargain. Heat added.

Looking for a slim, portable laptop primarily for light use, but am not up with current tech.
Generally want it for
*Surfing net
*Watching movies (720/1080 mkv.s etc) with option to play on tv if at friends / hotel etc.
*Would also like to be able to do light photo / video editing (Lightroom 3 / Photoshop) and maybe tether a dslr.

The size and screen on this look right, but will the processor be ok for my needs for the next few years??
Not bothered about games (apart from online flash stuff for the kids) and will upgrade to W7 immediately.

Is this for me??
#21
Defo worth a punt, bargain price. Come on, £230 is cheap as chips. Just rip crappy vista build off it and install stripped down version of Windows 7, update to latest drivers and this thing should fly! I have a Asus Atom notebook running Windows 7 and mac os X and it runs pretty fast. I have just brought one today.. i might even upgrade the HDD to SSD to give some extra bang... Rember most people stick to the standard builds combined with older drivers this can make the laptop run slow, also lots extra apps installed as default that use up processor power, that you will never use!! £230 = 24 hr DHL delivery, 1 year standard Warranty, 14 Inch Screen, 3gb Ram, 8 hour long battery!!, Nice Thin laptop, built in webcam & microphone, HDMI and VGA ports, Bluetooth, Wireless N too bargain!! Show me a netbook that matches his spec for this kind of money????
#22
couldnt agree with you more - sorrytest

its a real steal

£230 for a laptop, thin, light, long battery with an optical drive - hot!

as for netbooks i hate em! too small and cramped, hand has to hover over mousepad as no where to rest hand - horrid things

I think this opinion depends who you are and what your usage is. I have an NC10 running an Atom processor and have been working non stop for 6 weeks (10hrs a day) on it and it works perfect for my use. The battery life is 6+ hrs a day.

This is however a very hot deal IMO and I would love to have the disposable income to afford one at the moment.

For those of you who want more information, Notebookcheck.net present a page full of review summaries together with links HERE. It makes interesting reading. I dont need another computer but i'm quite tempted to order one for myself.

BTW, how do some people seem to know the exact number up for sale for any particular item on the argos ebay website?

Dont think so. Argos fleabay frequently has large batches to sell. If anything, it probably increases the chances of getting a mint condition one (i.e brand new/open box). Buy any refurb and there always a slim chance you'll get a duff one. Distance selling regs state that you can return it within seven days at the vendors expense if its faulty or poor condition, but no one would want the hassle.

Doesn't it rather depend on what you're intending to use it for? I'm typing this on an old Dell Inspiron 9300 with a 1.4ghz Pentium M, 512mb and XP Home. I can watch HD movies, run Word, Excel and Powerpoint. I imagine it would be shocking for gaming, but that doesn't interest me at all. This Acer is quicker than my Dell... also lighter, better looking (not hard), HDMI out and significantly better battery life. I understand that for some it's not the best choice but for me, particularly at this price, it's absolutely ideal.

:)

This does have a DVD Writer.
The description also states it as dual layer so you can also write to 8.5GB discs if you need.

I've got 1 Atom netbook, 2 Atom desktops (both with ION), 1 CULV netbook (similar to this but dual core) and a multitude of other equipment, high spec laptops and desktops.

My CULV does not beat any of the modern Atoms when playing HD video, it's no faster when browsing the web and it doesn't connect to my wireless network any faster. In a lot of cases the ION graphics isn't even used, yet the systems work fine, it's far from shocking and it's not that long ago when a CPU of the Atoms capability was considered state of the art.

But run up Visual Studio and suddenly you start to see the speed advantage, throw in Photoshop at the same time and the single core might struggle, a couple of video converters in the mix and even this laptop would die, compared to my CULV.

But the fact is, it depends on what you plan to use if for, there's no point having a ferrari to go shopping, likewise if surfing and a bit of email is all you need, then a simple atom netbook would be fine.
